Last night Sam was 30 minutes late to record the podcast. We didn’t get mad though because we know Sam is still in early recovery and his transition from a flaky piece of s**t into dependable human being is not yet complete. How much longer will we put up with Sam’s flakiness until we finally give up on him?

New Junkyland! The guys attempt to answer the big question: is addiction a disease?

Disclaimer: after about 45 seconds of discussing whether or not addiction is a disease, the conversation descends into chaos and Andy starts telling stories about smoking m**h out of a lightbulb and watching Titanic three times in a row.

New Junkyland! Andy and Sam talk about how Jada Pinkett Smith is a bad person and how she in fact deserved much, much worse. Will Smith’s kids are also very bad people. Sam complains about not having a higher power and Andy vents about people who ask you to take your shoes off when entering their home.

Chuck!

New Junkyland! The comedy world is full of pretentious nerds who are constantly trying to convince you how brilliant they are. Chuck Fury is exactly the opposite and that’s why he’s quickly becoming one of the most beloved people in the comedy scene. He’s an authentic weirdo who is who he is. Plus he’s a brother in recovery who has some wild P*P stories. Chuck gets real about how recovery is an improvement over active addiction but it’s still no bed of roses — Chuck is 49 years old, living in his car and trying to make it as a comedian. His life is tough y’all! Despite this, you’ll never catch him whining, feeling bad for himself or playing the victim. Link in comments.

Billie Jean returns to Junkyland! Billie had 15 years clean from m**h and dedicated her life being of service to addicts experiencing homelessness through her organization, Addict to Advocate. Despite being a pillar of the Salt Lake City recovery community and having long-term recovery under her belt, Billie relapsed on he**in after experiencing a series of traumatic events. Her coming forward and being publicly open about her slip up takes extraordinary courage and we are all so happy to have Billie Jean back on the wagon, so she can continue being a source of hope and inspiration to us all. Plus, Andy has a red face and Sam has a gigantic head. Link in comments.

New Junkyland! Terry Burdon had his first drink at age 12 and kept drinking through college and adulthood. Despite some hangovers and other small malarkey, alcohol never had a bad impact on his life, which allowed him to justify his drinking until one night, he got extra smashed and got into an brutal car accident, nearly killing himself. Today, Terry is sober and in recovery but recovery hasn’t been a cakewalk for Terry. Trying to deal with all wreckage he caused while drinking is no easy task. We also talk about the overlap between social media addiction and substance abuse. Fun!

PS – I got new microphones and the audio is kind of funny but it sounds just fine! So relax!

Randall was the lead anchor for channel 4 news in Salt Lake City. Before internet news and streaming services, network television news dominated the airways. Every night, hundreds of thousands of Utahans would tune in to hear Randall’s professional, objective takes on the happenings of the times. Randall was a trusted and well-liked source of information for years and years.

He also spent decades drinking until he blacked out…every. single. night. Randall justified his alcoholism because he was making a comfortable living and was a good provider. Despite the fact that his drinking cost him four marriages and countless memories, Randall continued to drink until passing out every night for decades. Give this episode a listen to hear about Randall‘s realization that no amount of money or prestige could make up for all the destroyed memories and relationships. He could no longer deny the extreme danger of his behavior, it was time for him to begin his journey back to sanity.

Today, Randall has nine years clean and sober. He is incredibly grateful that his drinking didn’t destroy his liver or cause him permanent brain damage; he is mindful of so many other alcoholics who were not so lucky. Randall now works at the Odyssey House in Salt Lake City, using his knowledge of the media to spread awareness and education about the disease of addiction. His new job doesn’t have the glamour or celebrity recognition of his old job, but the feeling he gets being of service to people in recovery brings him more joy than being the top news anchor in Salt Lake City ever could bring him.

In 2017, Jason was sitting in jail, kicking he**in when he had the idea for Addicts Fighting Back: a nonprofit organization of people in recovery, fighting back against the disease of addiction by organizing fun events for people in recovery, building friendships and connections. Sean got out of jail in 2018, joined the AFB Facebook group and said, “let’s blow this thing up” and that’s exactly what they’re doing y’all.
Today, AFB is growing rapidly, with chapters in Utah County, Salt Lake County and plans to expand into Orange County. Give this episode a listen to hear Jason and Sean’s stories and their belief in service. Andy and Sean also talk about the burdon of living with felonies while trying not to harbor poisonous resentment. Sean processes his anger by listening to uplifting music and Andy does it by talking about eating butts.

Four years ago, Amy was homeless on the streets of Salt Lake City. She was arrested seven times and was selling m**h to pay for her he**in use. Despite all of this, she still didn’t believe she was an addict. Only after checking her ego, processing her trauma and being vulnerable to enough to accept help from others did Amy begin to recover. Now she is a beacon of hope in the recovery community and dedicates her life be of service to others in recovery, working at the Odyssey House in Salt Lake City. Give this episode a listen to hear Amy’s amazing story of transformation and to once again hear Andy babble incoherently in another desperate attempt to say som**hing interesting.

My friend Nicholas Don Smith popped in Junkyland to talk about food addiction and the overlap with food addiction and drug addiction is wild. Like drugs, people take the food to offer a reprieve from life’s struggles and hardships and Nicolas articulated this with honesty and clarity and this description is hardly doing it justice. First rate listen y’all. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/junkyland/id1497196361?i=1000528547058

New Junkyland! Ian Acker stops by to compliment my shoes and talk about his organization: FTR (Fit to Recover) Fit To Recover is a community that helps people in sobriety connect through exercise, nutrition, service and art. Even for great big fat lards like me. Plus, Ian even shares a bit about himself. I share my idea about a recovery related bath house where people in sobriety wash each other in giant bath tubs. Ian did not approve. This ep is good. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/junkyland/id1497196361?i=1000527947039

NEW Junkyland bonus episode! Ryan Hymas from I Am Recovery stops by to chat about life, recovery and being in the moment. Instead of it running from whatever the moment has to offer, Ryan talks about sitting with what you’re feeling and being present. Plus Ryan shared his own recovery story and it’s very worth hearing. Very insightful, great stuff. Plus Andy was 100% naked while recording and Ryan powered through like a champ. That’s the power of principle-based thinking, folks. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/junkyland/id1497196361?i=1000526685081
