I’m just going to sit this right here. Now is not the time to be meek.

Many educators are in the classroom and they have no idea about the culture of others but dealing out punishments and repercussions completely unaware of the consequences. I’ve had to speak up for several children to my fellow educators who had no idea that their responsibility to that child not only included educating them but also protecting their mental and physical health.

You can’t educate a child and then post pictures of them making fun of their hairstyle on social media. You can’t educate a child but then consider them unruly when they are crying and trying to explain to you that the repercussion you gave them will cause them to get a “whipping” at home. You can’t educate a child while also ignoring their culture, religion, race, native language etc.

Many educators in the public sector need to go into the private sector where diversity is lower and they can keep their narrative of being an educator. Even with diversity training, diversity committee and reading articles some are still lost and their bias will continue to show.

Evaluations need to include checkpoints for how educators are using those diversity resources which are hopefully in place. Specific examples need to be included as well. It’s time for a new day to not just speak about it but put it into action.
