This week in 1982, Mötley Crüe released their debut album, TOO FAST FOR LOVE. Actually, it had been released on an indie label several months earlier, but since they only managed to print 900 copies of it, most people don't consider it to be the "official" release. Elektra Records signed them shortly thereafter, and the band was asked to re-record a few of the tracks (and remaster all of them). Due in no small part to the popularity of "Live Wire," the album peaked at #77 on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified platinum in 1987. What do YOU think is the best song on this record?

On this day in 1986, RATT released their third full-length studio album, DANCING UNDERCOVER. While most people consider it to be the final installment of their sacred trifecta, the album was produced during a time when the band was struggling to remain relevant in a heavily diluted glam-metal scene. With several new bands making their way onto the charts, the boys from RATT unexpectedly found themselves working twice as hard to keep their music in front of a captive audience. That being said, Dancing Undercover had several memorable tracks (Body Talk, Slip of the Lip, 7th Avenue, Dance, etc.) that pushed it up to #26 on the Billboard 200 as it "danced" its way to a platinum certification in less than six months. RATT was joined by several big acts on their supporting tour in '86 and '87 (Poison, Cheap Trick, and Queensrÿche), all of whom bore witness to the most prolific era of the band's storied career. What do YOU think about this album?

On this day in 1987, Def Leppard released their fourth studio album, HYSTERIA. Believe it or not, there was a period of time when their record company thought it wasn't going to happen. The project was plagued with countless delays (including Rick Allen's horrific accident in which he lost his left arm) and was so far over budget that it had to sell at least 5 million copies just to break even. Mutt Lange encouraged the band to persevere for nearly three years, and as luck would have it, the gamble paid off. Hysteria spent an astonishing 96 weeks on the US Top 40 and has since been certified 12x platinum by the RIAA. The album generated 7 successful singles (all of which broke into the top 10 in the US) and eventually went #1 in at least five different countries. Even though we tend to prefer Def Leppard's sound from 1981-1983, there's no denying that Hysteria is an absolute juggernaut. 🤘

On this day in 1978, Van Halen released their monumental debut album. One of the most important features of a truly revolutionary rock album is that it mustn't resemble anything that came before it. You know the ones we're talking about...they're the albums that are so self-evident that even the most inexperienced listener can name them -- Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin I, The Ramones, Kill 'Em All, Are You Experienced, The Rolling Stones (England's Newest Hit Makers), Blizzard of Oz, and so on. In 1978, Eddie Van Halen created sounds that were virtually unimagined at the time, and the flurry of notes that he showcased on Eruption were entirely unprecedented. Oh sure, Blackmore, Page, and Iommi were the reigning ax-wielders at the time, but this was something that even they could never dream of producing. Every song on Van Halen I is a revolutionary masterpiece, and as far as we're concerned, it created the sonic template that defined the next era of rock & roll. 🤘🏻
