I have to believe that it wasn’t by accident [that the story of blacks on Iwo Jima was not told]. It was purposely done. I look back and you want to say, hey, they wouldn’t do that. Yes, they did it. ’Cause I talked with a fellow, as a matter of fact, he’s not young anymore. He was in my platoon. And he told me that he was on the beach and they were filming. They didn’t have the TV coverage then. They were filming either some Marine replacements as they were coming to shore. He said he was on his way. They used us [black Marines] for grave registration. They used us for guard duty, brought guards on ammo dumps. The guards on the supply dumps, the guards on the medicine. As I said, guards on the water. He told me, he said, you know, they turned when they saw my unit. He was one of our squad leaders. He said when they saw my squad leader coming past, they turned the cameras away from us. I said, well, it’s just your imagination. And he said, no, they saw me coming, saw us coming and turned the cameras away.
