My pod musings - Episode 1
It’s quite a journey, crafting an audio narrative. I build a story arc, I formulate questions around that arc, I set up the interviews …
And then … as people open up, as more information comes through, as I go through the tape, stories emerge that always take me by surprise.
In my first episode of This is my Tribe, I focussed on a young man named Brodie Whalan, a freediver and underwater photographer, who is deeply connected with the sea, with his creative side, and with a community that has forged strong foundations for his work to thrive.
Many stories worked their way through this piece – love, connection, grief, but I think what spoke to me the most was Brodie saying yes to soul.
Brodie was a typical coastal kid, swimming, diving, fishing … but something switched on in Brodie when he was under the water. He saw something beautiful, and he wanted to capture it for others to see.
He said yes to it.
That started a journey from spearfishing to photography, and a shared exploration of worlds unknown.
Then there was a request at his school for young creators to work on a film project for the local community – a community still reeling from the black summer bushfires.
Brodie said yes again.
This simple action led Brodie on a journey to further developing his craft, receiving mentorship from other photographers and divers, and incredibly, before he’d even turned 18, to discovering a deep sense of purpose in the work he was doing.
In the space of a few seconds, Brodie’s life might’ve been very different.
He could’ve said no. And filled that space with all the ‘but’s’ that we often use. But I have exams, but I don’t have time, but I’m not ready, but I’m not good enough.
Sound familiar?
What happens when we say yes to these moments instead?
When we ignore the rabble of our heads and open up to what our heart is whispering.
What new paths open up to us?
Listen to those quiet moments, try it out.
Say yes to soul.
You might be surprised.
