It is unbelievable, when one thinks of it, that a desert could exist at such an altitude! Equally surprising is the sight of the double hu**ed Bactrian camels, whose two humps enable them to develop resistance to cold, drought & high altitudes.

Also known as Deskit Gompa or Diskit Gompa is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh, northern India.

The monastery administration runs a school, with support from a non-government organization known as the "Tibet Support Group", which has computer facilities and teaches science subjects, in English, to children of the region

This impressive 32 metre (106 foot) statue on top of a hill below the monastery, faces down the towards Pakistan.

The monastery's most prominent attraction is
the huge Maitreya Buddha status atop it,
which was inaugurated by the HH Dalai Lama.

Turtuk is located on the banks of the Shyok River.Geographically, the village is in the Baltistan region, which has been under Pakistani administration, except for five villages of the Turtuk block which are part of India. These villages form the only region in India populated by Balti people. Turtuk is known for its varieties of fruits, especially apricots.

Turtuk was under Pakistani control until the war of 1971,when the Indian Army captured the village. It s the last outpost of India's Ladakh. It is also one of the gateways to the Siachen Glacier.

Thang (also called Dhothang, Thanga Chathang) is a small village in the Leh district of Ladakh, India. It is in the historical Chorbat region of Baltistan, divided between India and Pakistan by the 1972 Line of Control. Thang is part of the Nubra tehsil and the Turtuk community development block.
The village was seized from Pakistan along with three other villages in the area as a result of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. It is 2.5 kms from the line of control. The area's population is largely Balti.

People are warm, humble and extremely beautiful. I spent one good afternoon roaming around the village.
Locals are happy to see new faces with bright smiles on their faces as a gesture of welcome.
