Termites, snake, other animals accused of ‘swallowing’ money in Nigeria.

Nigerians frequently wake to bizarre allegations of corruption that involve large amounts of money. But recently, animals have been accused of making away with huge sums of money or eating up financial documents by this present administration led by Muhammad Buhari

This embarrassing trend appears to be a new twist to the common news story about alleged corrupt practices in the All Progressive Congress APC led government.

The strange phenomena of animals being blamed for missing funds without trace has over time elicited a flurry of reactions.

This report chronicles animals accused of eating up, and swallowing money in Nigeria:

1. Termites ‘eat up’ NSITF documents containing expenditures worth 17 billion

Termites were alleged to have eaten up some documents of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) containing expenditures worth N17.1 billion.
These documents are said to contain details of spendings by the agency in 2013.
The NSITF management stated this when it appeared before the Senate Public Accounts Committee (S**C).
The current Managing Director, Michael Akabogu, said the documents were in the organisation’s possession.
He said: “The container the said documents were kept by past management has not only been beaten by rains over the years but even possibly been eaten up by termites,” he told the panel.

2. Snake swallowed 36 million

In 2018, a sales clerk was suspended after she told auditors that a snake had swallowed 36 million Naira proceeds from sale of scratch cards.
The clerk, Philomena Chieshe, was working at an office for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Benue state.
A representative of JAMB, Fabian Benjamin had said that the employee admitted to the auditors that the snake “swallowed” the missing money.
She admitted that she had the money and kept it in an office’s safe, but the snake came and swallowed the money, Benjamin explained.

3. Gorilla swallowed N6.8 million

In 2019, a gorilla was accused of swallowing N6.8 million in the Kano Zoological Gardens, according to BBC Pidgin.
A finance officer in the zoo was quoted as saying the gorilla sneaked into an office and carted away the money before swallowing it.
The managing director of the zoo, Umar Kobo confirmed that the money went missing and that the issue was subjected to investigation by the state government.

4. Monkey swallowed 70 million

In February 2018, Senator Shehu Sani stated the 70 million, which was given to the Northern Forum of Senators, was swallowed by monkeys at the leader’s farm.
Sani told reporters minutes after Senator Abdullahi Adamu was deposed as chairman of the Northern Senators Forum.
Senator Adamu was accused of misuse of 70 million belonging to the Northern senators Forum.
Sani said according to the deposed Senator, that some monkeys had allegedly swallowed the money.

Could it be one of the things Obasanjo wants Nigerians to know about Atiku?

U.S. Senate investigators in 2010 alleged that one of Atiku’s four wives helped him transfer more than $40 million in “suspect funds” into the United States from offshore shell companies. At least $1.7 million of that money was bribes paid by German technology company Siemens AG, according to Senate investigators. Siemens pleaded guilty to bribery charges in 2008 and agreed to pay a $1.6 billion fine.

Atiku was also figured prominently in the corruption trial of former U.S. Representative William Jefferson, who was accused of trying to bribe Atiku in an effort to expand a technology business in Nigeria. Jefferson was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 13 years in prison. His sentence was subsequently reduced.

Reasons Nigerians shouldn't vote for Atiku

Atiku’s visa troubles stem from when he served as Nigeria’s vice president, from 1999 to 2007.

1. He figured prominently in the corruption trial of former U.S. Representative William Jefferson, who was accused of trying to bribe Atiku in an effort to expand a technology business in Nigeria. Jefferson was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 13 years in prison. His sentence was subsequently reduced.

2. Separately U.S. Senate investigators in 2010 alleged that one of Atiku’s four wives helped him transfer more than $40 million in “suspect funds” into the United States from offshore shell companies.

3. At least $1.7 million of that money was bribes paid by German technology company Siemens AG, according to Senate investigators. Siemens pleaded guilty to bribery charges in 2008 and agreed to pay a $1.6 billion fine.

4. Atiku’s whirlwind visit to Washington January 17, 2019 was put together with the help of two U.S. lobbying firms.

5. Holland & Knight was hired by Atiku personally in December 2019 to help him secure a visa, in part by enlisting members of Congress to request one on his behalf, according to a lobbyist for the firm. It has been paid $80,000 so far.

6. Ballard Partners was hired by Atiku’s political party (PDP) at a rate of $90,000 per month in September 2019, before Atiku emerged as the party’s candidate, according to U.S. disclosure filings.

7. The firm’s lobbyists worked to set up a meeting with Nagy, arguing it would show that the United States wanted to encourage free and fair elections in a country where graft is endemic.

8. Aside from Nagy, Atiku met with business leaders at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and at least two Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives who specialize in foreign affairs, Representative Michael McCaul of Texas and Representative Chris Smith of New Jersey.

“We are not asking the administration or anyone to take sides, but to merely demand the same level of freeness and fairness,” Ballard lobbyist Jamie Rubin told Reuters.

Atiku stayed at the Trump International Hotel, owned by the president, and met with several hundred Nigerian expatriates there, according to two people who attended the gathering.
