Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968. Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1929, King graduated from Morehouse College and went on to earn a PhD in theology from Boston University. He became the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama and rose to prominence in the Civil Rights Movement through his role in the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, which protested the city's segregation policies on public buses.

King advocated for nonviolent resistance and his speeches, including the famous "I Have a Dream" speech delivered at the Lincoln Memorial during the 1963 March on Washington, inspired a generation to fight for equal rights and dignity for all. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his efforts to end segregation and racial discrimination through nonviolent means.
