I've been captivated by the journey of a person who rises at 4 a.m. without fail, does cold plunges, engages in intense workouts, goes hunting, fishing, and relentlessly pursues his dreams in the outdoors. What sets him apart is not just his personal quest for adventure but his commitment to sharing these invaluable experiences with his family and especially with his daughter.

I first noticed him when he had just a couple of hundred followers on social media, and yet, he persisted in creating content that resonated deeply with his audience. Hunting in the mountains for mule deer feels like the pinnacle of a year long journey. I work hard throughout the year to take the time off to hunt, but I also physically work hard to keep my body in hiking shape. This year especially, I dropped 40 pounds and built muscle to go farther into the backcountry than I ever have before.

This year was filled with hikes I could not have done in years previous. Then on the first snowfall of the year, I am blessed with this guy creeping below me in one of my easier spots, trying to sneak back up into the cliffs. There was a small window through the trees to make a decision and with one perfectly placed bullet, he stopped breathing within 10 seconds.

Every year, this is always a moment filled with gratitude, excitement and sadness. I am so grateful for a body that is capable and especially for the life taken so my family can have the best quality meat nature provides.

This deer managed to find himself a safe spot on this island. He looks like he's going to be a pretty decent buck! Are you guys ready for hunting season? I know I am! One of the best parts of hunting is exploring new places and tracking animals in preparation for the season to begin. Did you know? The term 'buck' originally referred to a male deer's hide that was used as a unit of trade by early American settlers.

Following the recent supermoon in August, I went out hunting; mainly just to see if people would push the elk anywhere, but surprisingly there was barely anyone out. Heading over the top of the mountains, where I was at, I spotted a pretty decent buck and some cows and ended up losing him, but I saw a lot of other deer and elk too. Overall, it was a pretty cool day out in the woods! Stay tuned for more hunting adventures!

On August 30th of this year, while out hunting, I was fortunate enough to experience one of the four supermoons that occurred in 2023! Although the hunting day was a bust and I didn’t see anything, if I didn’t end up getting out there, I would have completely missed this gorgeous sight. It just goes to show that even if the animals are hiding, there is always something to see!! Get out there!

This buck taught me THE MOST valuable hunting lesson. We had hiked all day on a brutal steep face, mostly sidehilling for miles in a bowl, peeking over ridge after ridge after ridge. We had one more ridge with a steep 500 foot climb. We are nearing the hot midday and our hunting group was ready to call it quits and start fresh in the morning. After much convincing, we decided to hike the final ridge, as one of my friends said ,"To prove to you, there are no bucks in this bowl." Sure enough, we get to the top of this ridge and we see a bush shaking back and forth at about 400 yards away. I sat down through burnt timber, waiting for whatever was behind the bush to emerge. This gave me the opportunity to settle down, calm my nerves and make the shot. After 10 minutes, he finally destroyed the bush enough and emerged. BOOM! I took the shot and dropped him where he stood. The lesson is, the big buck is always one more ridge away, and I am sure there was an even bigger buck one more ridge away.

Well folks, we got lucky this last Saturday. I took my dad for his first tournament and he won it for us! Tournament was about 30 boats. We won with 18+ pounds and my dad had big fish of 5.1 pounds. It’s safe to say, being a pastor, he has God’s favor.

This is the place to completely disconnect from technology, from vehicle noise, from lights. This is where you hear the pure sounds of nature and slowly tune in to what that means. Thankfully, this can happen all in preparation for the hunt, because scouting these mountain, hiking, and shed hunting are all great way to prep for the hunting season and disconnect from your day to day.

In today's video, we take a trip ice fishing on an "undisclosed lake" in Southern Idaho. One thing that is great about ice fishing is that you don't even need a boat to reel in some big fish!!! All you have to do is get out on the lake, drill some holes in the ice and you're good to go!!! It's a nice break from regular fishing because it requires a totally different approach and setup. Enjoy plenty of laughs and remember to end the day off with some fish kisses!

There is absolutely nothing better than hunting in the snow. For me, the first snowfall is when good bucks make mistakes, moving out of the cliffs and down into the timber, often times catching them in a tree gap.

One of my favorite spots to sit on first snow gives me a 200 yard shot into a pretty narrow shooting lane. With forest on all side, there is a 50 yard gap that allows me to catch the deer moving through the forest. On this particular day, three good bucks popped into the gap. I chose the one I wanted and took a shot… completely missed.
Buck fever had set in.

I went to reload and my bolt froze and popped out of my gun, leaving the next bullet jammed into the clip. Desperately, I tried to get the bullet out but to no avail. Slowly, I creeped up to my pack, grabbed a single bullet and crawled back down to my shooting lane. God must have helped me out, somehow all three bucks hadn’t moved after my first shot.

I got the bullet in with the bolt, took and big deep breath and squeezed the trigger. The deer dropped and the elk began.

Besides the missed shot, it was a picture perfect hunt and every day I am up in the mountains is one more blessing.

Won this one on a technicality, but I will take it. Big Largey for the entire year at Idaho Bass Hunters.

I am not for this raw organ, raw meat s**t for one simple reason. Wild game meat is delicious and should be enjoyed! I do have one exception, it’s called the Cannibal Sandwich and the reason it’s the exception is because it’s simple and delicious.

Take the appropriate cut of meat out of the freezer - elk or deer, super low fat, high protein. I like to use the tenderloin or backstrap - mince or grind. Toast a piece of rye bread, spread the meat, add salt and onion. Delicious!

We have a culture now where levels of meditation are sought after. We have people sitting in their homes dedicating time to be present and to be in the present. Hunting and fishing are forms of meditation because you have to be focused on the present, focused on your steps, your breathing, your interaction with everything around you, not in the past or in the future but in the NOW. You tune in right and become one with the land for the most chances at success.

Successful hunters have to learn the art of preparation - whether it’s preparing your land for whitetail or getting into the mountains early and finding your game. Every day spent prepping for hunting season increases your odds. BUT even with all the prep, there is no guarantee.

After many days of finding a shooter animal, I spotted and kept track of this buck every day for an entire week leading up to hunting season. Opening day, he disappeared, only to reappear the day after the season ended. I lost my game of chess with this particular buck, and I am ok walking away with some photos.

The lesson is, you can feel like you are doing everything possible to be successful and still, life is not predictable. You can only control yourself, your work ethic, your preparation, your determination.

In the end, hunting makes you a better person to deal with what life throws your way.

You rarely meet a person who walks the talk when it comes to hunting. Mr. Chris Cey absolutely walks the talk.
