UPDATE ON THE NEW COVID-19 VARIANT OF CONCERN (OMICRON)
The Ministry of Health would like to inform the public that there is a new SARS-CoV-2 (a virus that causes COVID-19) variant of concern that has been identified in some Southern African countries including South Africa and Botswana. The World Health Organization has classified this variant as B.1.1.529 (Omicron) and is characterized by an increased risk of re-infection as compared to the other variants of concern. This variant is responsible for an increased number of cases being reported in
some countries. As a country, we have the capacity to do genomic sequencing and we routinely conduct genomic sequencing on COVID-19 positive case samples to track the type of variants circulating in the country. So far from the samples that we have been collecting, the Omicron variant has not been isolated. However, surveillance on the same has been intensified and the country will
be informed accordingly on any developments. Apart from tracking the variant, the Ministry has also intensified the screening of travellers at all points of entry to prevent importation of COVID-19 cases.

It is important to note that although the virus is mutating, the basic preventive and containment measures remain the same and everyone is encouraged to strictly adhere to the following; proper wearing of masks, frequent hand-washing with soap or use of hand sanitizers, physical distancing, improving ventilation of indoor spaces, avoiding crowded spaces, avoiding mass gatherings and
getting vaccinated. On the vaccination, there is need for everyone aged 18 years and above to get vaccinated. The best time to get vaccinated is now, amid the threat of the 4th wave, so that our bodies should be prepared to fight the virus in case we get exposed. Let me encourage everyone eligible to receive the vaccine and also those that had received the first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine and 12 weeks have elapsed to visit the nearest vaccination site to get the COVID-19 vaccine

Lastly, there were reports in the media indicating that a traveller from this country (Malawi) was identified with the new variant in Israel, officially we have not been communicated but following the report, we are following up the issue to get more details to ascertain the incident and to facilitate
contact tracing. It is important to note that we screen both the incoming and outgoing travellers to ensure that they have a negative PCR test certificate. Those that are COVID-19 positive are not allowed to leave the country. There is a possible risk of getting infected with COVID-19 whilst in transit hence all travellers are encouraged to strictly follow all the preventive measures.

Zimbabwe and South Africa are back on the British Covid-19 red list after the emergence of the Covid-19 new variant named B.1.1.529.

British sources said the B.1.1.529 variant, which is feared to be more transmissible and has the potential to evade immunity, posed “a potentially significant threat to the vaccine programme which we have to protect at all costs”.
