Episode 3 of Attached is out now! In this episode, we’re doing a Deep Dive into NEW American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry science on how Black moms’ experiences of discrimination and trauma may be linked to their kids’ experiences of depression. Though we know that racism and trauma have profound impacts on maternal mental health, particularly for women who identify as African American, we have understood less how these impacts trickle down to affect children’s wellbeing. This new research on how racism affects moms’ *and* kids’ mental health speaks to how serious and widespread the effects of discrimination are – and, how we must take this seriously if we care about families. We break it all down – and talk about what it may mean for you, our listeners.

Episode 2 is LIVE! And in this episode, we’re doing a Deep Dive on NEW science out of UT Austin Human Ecology exploring how income is tied to couples’ quality and quantity time. Though divorce rates have been stable or declining since the 90s, the marriages of couples living in poverty are at greatest risk of dissolving. Some think that might be because the stress of living without enough income leaks into relationships, taking away from the time those couples get to spend together. While we know that spending time together is *key* to a quality relationship, we *don’t* know how that might look different for couples at different income levels. Well…until now.

In this week's Episode, our Academic Deep Dive tackles new PLOS research out of Ruhr-Universität Bochum that explores how HUGS might protect us from our body's usual response to stress. The authors found that, among couples going through an experimental stress test, brief 20-second embraces from a romantic partner were linked to less stress-related cortisol for women!

TWENTY SECONDS. That's a pretty easy way to care for your partner, especially at a time when many people are feeling more stress. Thanks, science!
