I stand with the women of Iran! I stand with Masha Amini and her family.

Mahsa Amini, 22, was on a visit with her family to the Iranian capital when she was detained on Tuesday by the police unit responsible for enforcing the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code for women, which includes the compulsory wearing of the headscarf in public.

Masha fell into a coma after being arrested in Tehran by the notorious ‘morality police’ died on Friday, state media and her family said, with activists urging those responsible for her “suspicious” death to be brought to justice.

It makes my blood boil to know that women continue to be persecuted and oppressed in the most evil ways.

How can this continue? for all those in a place of power and who abuse their power in the name of God should never get away with such brutality. This has nothing to do with God, this is about control and abuse.

F**k the morality police! F**k this system!

Christopher Vipond Davies: So what (supposed false claims of refugees)? I think it is great that Germany is doing all it can to help. Europe has contributed a lot to the problems in the Middle East: firstly, the way Britain and France carved it up after World War One; second the way the USA meddles there, preaching freedom and democracy but actually mainly for economic reasons, particularly connected with oil; and also Germany, also other countries to a lesser extent, in its persecution of Jews which lead to many leaving Europe and creating the new state of Israel - and like many abused individuals, abusing the less "blessed" people around them, rather than behaving as their supposed ancestor Jacob did towards his brother Esau, restoring what his father Isaac did not do with his half brother Ishmael, supposedly the ancestor of the Arabic people to whom Mohammed ministered. So today's Germans are doing the right thing, whether aware of it or not, taking responsibility for the mess created by their ancestors. As a Brit, I hope Britain can do more of the same.

‘Ik wilde niet vluchten maar de oorlog gaf me geen keus’
Siham nam als studente in Syrië een radicale beslissing: ze werd vrijwilliger op de ambulance voor het Rode Kruis. De collegebanken wisselde ze af met het verzorgen van gewonden en het ontwijken van sluipschutters in de Syrische stad Homs. Tot ze er door alle gruwelijkheden bijna aan onderdoor ging en het land ontvluchtte.

‘Je beste wapen is je opleiding’
Nu bouwt ze met steun van het UAF haar leven in Nederland op. Ze is onlangs begonnen met haar opleiding International Studies. Want, zoals haar vader haar al zei: ‘Je beste wapen is je opleiding.’

Wat doen wij voor Syrische vluchtelingen als Siham?
Veel vluchtelingen die op dit moment naar Nederland komen, zijn net als Siham afkomstig uit Syrië. Daar is een goed onderwijssysteem. Een groot deel van de vluchtelingen is dan ook hoger opgeleid en wil hun kennis en ervaring in Nederland inzetten.

Helaas kunnen zij met hun Syrische diploma niet zonder meer aan de slag in Nederland. Ook komen zij vaak niet in aanmerking voor studiefinanciering. Daarom kloppen ze bij Stichting voor Vluchteling-Studenten UAF aan. Wij bieden hen steun bij het leren van Nederlands, het voorbereiden op de studie, de studie zelf en bij het vinden van werk. Zo kunnen ze weer een nieuw leven opbouwen en bijdragen aan de Nederlandse samenleving.

Waarom vragen we uw hulp?
Het UAF verwacht de komende jaren een verdubbeling van het aantal steunaanvragen. We staan voor de uitdaging om alle vluchtelingen dezelfde kansen te bieden. Uw hulp is daarbij onmisbaar.
