SAM 20 gives an account of stewardship to citizens of Ado-Odo/Ota.

The Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Engr. Sheriff Adewale Musa Musa Sheriff earlier today gave an account of stewardship to the citizens of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.

The Chairman appreciated the good people of the Council Area for voting massively for him during the polls three years ago. He noted that the support and cooperation of the people had enabled him to steer the ship of the Council Area. He further apologized for any shortcomings that could have been traced to his doorstep.

Musa stressed that his open-door policy and public engagement skills made it possible for Corporate Organisations and good-spirited individuals to partner with his administration in delivering good governance to the people of the area. The Council Boss highlighted some of the strides achieved through public-private partnerships. He recalled how he gave awards to organizations that supported his administration earlier this year. He further highlighted his impacts in the eight thematic areas the Citizens demanded actions at the beginning of his administration through the Citizens Charter of Demands.

The Chairman of the African Foundation for Environment and Development, AFED, Otunba Bolaji Oyedeko welcomed all the stakeholders to the Town Hall Meeting. He said AFED as an organization has been at the forefront of promoting citizens' participation in Governance. Oyedeko noted that nothing less than ten Citizens Platforms were created to engage the government in different focal areas and the Citizens Charter of Demands is a document that was put together by all critical stakeholders.

In their separate remarks, the Zonal CDC Chairman, Prince Onaolapo Olatunji, the representative of SERAP, Ms. Adelanke Aremo, and the representative of NUJ, Comrade Tunji Egbewunmi commended the Chairman for creating time to engage the citizens. They charged the people not to relent in demanding good governance from their elected officials.

The Executive Director of AFED and lead organizer of the Town Hall Meeting, Comrade Adeshola Afariogun coordinated the interactive session where questions were posed to the Council Chairman while he responded.

Other public officials present at the meeting include the Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Bukola Balogun-Omosowon, the Secretary to the Local Government, Mr. Abiodun Akonthe-Sejoro, the Deputy Leader, Hon. Kamal Yakubu, the Supervisor for Agric. & Natural Resources, Deaconess Sarah Oduneye and the Councillor representing Ere Ward, Hon. Olusegun Idowu-Vodjo including the immediate Past Chairman of the Local Government, Alhaji Wasiu Lawal.

On the 5th of August, 2021, the Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Engr. Sheriff Adewale Musa received a document tagged ‘CITIZENS CHARTER OF DEMANDS’ from the Ado-Odo/Ota Civil Society Citizens Engagement Platform. The document contains the expectations of the people from the administration of SAM 20. Nothing less than 8 thematic areas were highlighted which include ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE, POVERTY REDUCTION, GOOD HEALTH & WELL BEING, QUALITY EDUCATION, GENDER EQUALITY & EQUITY, WATER & SANITATION, GOOD GOVERNANCE, and YOUTH DEVELOPMENT.

Today, the Council Chairman will be giving an account of his stewardship to the good people of Ado-Odo/Ota and we can boldly say that his administration significantly met the demands of the citizens.

In terms of Road Infrastructure, they demanded that he fix the trunk C roads and partner with private organizations to achieve this. We are pleased to announce that aside from the grading of roads that cut across all 16 wards, Oloko-Onimalu Road which was fixed by Coca-Cola was facilitated by the SAM 20 administration. The Jendol link road which was carried out by CWAY and the Fidson Avenue road which was a collaborative effort of all stakeholders in that axis are part of the facilitated projects of this administration. The Iyanayesi-Itori Road by SHELL is another milestone that can't be divorced from this administration. In fact, in one of our visits to Itori village, we saw the condition of the Primary School there and that led to the construction of a toilet facility for the school. Our constant engagement with Winners Chapel & Covenant University brought about countless interventions on road infrastructure within the Local Government in the past three years.

On Poverty Reduction, to mark his 100 days in office, 100 widows were empowered with cash grants to start up a mini business while many other women and youth have benefited from the interventions of State & Federal Government initiatives in reducing poverty.

On quality education, the citizens demanded that the Chairman should routinely visit Public Primary Schools to inspire the Pupils and have a better understanding of addressing their challenges. We are pleased to say that the Chairman made it a pet project to visit public primary schools to inspire the kids. He believed in catching them young. He told the kids that he's a product of public education right from primary to tertiary. Not only that, he attended the first primary school in Ota, the first secondary school in Ota, and the first University in Nigeria. It was during one of these visits, that our attention was drawn to the dilapidated state of one of the blocks of classrooms at A.U.D Primary School, Iju Ota. We are pleased to announce that that block of classrooms was one of the projects that was recently commissioned by the Chairman. While exploring Public Private Partnership, Fidson Healthcare promised to put up a sick bay inside Iganmode Grammar School and they did.

In line with their demand in the area of Healthcare delivery, SAM 20 did not just touch on infrastructural development, he equally touched on Manpower increase and training of staff. In partnership with Covenant University, Iju Health Centre received a facelift. Staff quarters of the health facility have been revamped including the pharmacy. At Ijoko Health Centre, Lions International put up a Modular Eye Centre. The Council also partnered with the same Lions Club to carry out Free Eye Screening and eyeglasses to more than 300 people. A similar partnership was carried out with Smile Pride Dental Care on Dental Care for citizens. We also carried out Medical Outreach in partnership with the Kirti Foundation and many more that we can't begin to mention.

On Gender Equality & Equity, the citizens demanded that women should be made to occupy significant positions in the cabinet of SAM 20. It will interest you to note that aside from having a woman as his Vice Chairman and a woman as the Leader of the Legislative Council, 3 out of 5 Supervisors are women. The Department of Community Development, Department of Water & Environment, Department of Agriculture, and Natural Resources are all manned by women.

On Water & Sanitation; despite not having total control over Environmental Sanitation as OGWAMA & OGEPA have been empowered by the State government to handle the major activities, the constant engagement with the State Actors who are in charge made us achieve a significant impact in this area. The Council willingly partnered with NGOs who rose to the occasion in managing our environment.

On Good Governance; many have adjudged this administration as the most responsible and responsive in recent times. They acclaimed they have easy access to the Chairman. SAM 20’s public engagement activities are second to none. He has met with practically all stakeholders in the Local Government. From the Youth body to the Corporate body, to the Professional Associations such as NBA, NSE, and CITN, and a host of others to the Community Leaders, Market Women, Security Agencies, and Traditional institutions to mention but a few. He worked with critical stakeholders in enacting two major bylaws for the Local Government. The Bye-Law on Community Rate was done in collaboration with the Zonal ACDC while the Bye-Law on the Environment was done in collaboration with Civil Society, NGOs, and Community Leaders.

Lastly regarding Youth Development; several training platforms and empowerment initiatives were rolled out. Over 200 youths benefited from the CISCO-powered training on relevant ICT skills which was carried out in partnership with Covenant University & Olota Palace. The National Youth Council of Nigeria are partner in progress. They are beneficiaries of interventions by the State & Federal Government through the Local Government. SAM 20 also employed scores of youths in the Local Government Service.

Today's Town Hall meeting is another testament to SAM 20’s commitment to Good Governance through transparency and accountability.
