State-owned Bangladesh Shipping Corp is seeking $22.4 million from its insurer for a cargo ship hit by a missile in March, government officials with knowledge of the talks said, in the first major marine insurance claim from the conflict in Ukraine.

The UN's shipping agency said last week it would create a safe maritime corridor for merchant ships and crews stuck in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov, although shipping industry sources expect progress to be slow. Projectiles have hit four other vessels in recent days with one sunk.

Insurance premiums have soared by over 100% for voyages to the region since the war started. Insurers are watching closely for more claims that will ultimately increase costs further.

During the weekend Greenpeace Nordic activists are taking action at sea to confront the Russian fossil fuels still being shipped out through the Baltic Sea to fuel the war in Ukraine. Activists from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Netherlands and Germany went in rhib boats, kayaks and as swimmers in front of two 250m long supertankers on their way from Russia to Europe.

" Displaying banners with “Oil Fuels War” Greenpeace calls on Europe to reject and ban any import of fossil fuels from Russia to weaken the attack on Ukraine, and to rapidly phase out all fossil fuels to fight the climate crisis and protect humanity" said Greenpeace

Comoros-flagged cargo vessel ran aground in the Çanakkale Strait, also known as the Dardanelles, on Turkey's western coastline on Friday. Rescue efforts are underway to pull the vessel to safety, while no injuries were reported among the crew.

The vessel Kapitan Shyriagin was carrying corn and traveling from Romania to Italy when the captain reported the incident to the Turkish coast safety authorities. Boats were dispatched to the scene to remove the 142-meter (466-foot) vessel from the spot it stuck near the village of Kilitbahir.

The waterway was closed to maritime traffic. After nearly two hours, the ship was freed and continued on its way.

The Dardanelles is an important passage for ships traveling between the Black, Aegean and Mediterranean seas. It is also among the narrowest waterways, with a width between 1.2 to 6 kilometers (0.75 to 3.7 miles) and a maximum depth of 103 meters at its narrowest point.

Accoring to Manila Bulletin, Senator Joel Villanueva on Thursday said at least 30,000 Filipino seafarers abroad are at risk of losing their jobs if the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) is still not adequately implemented in the country’s maritime education, training, and certification systems.
This prompted Villanueva to call on the heads of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) to save the Filipino seafarer sector from “drowning” due to adverse findings of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) from issues regarding the state of maritime higher education in the country.
“Our seafarers greatly contribute to our economy, especially during the pandemic. So let’s save this sector from drowning. Let’s keep our Filipino seafarers world-class by following international standards,” the lawmaker said.

An Estonian-owned cargo ship has sunk off Ukraine’s major Black Sea port of Odesa, hours after a Bangladeshi vessel was hit by a missile or bomb at another port.

Many shipping firms have suspended sailings to affected Black Sea ports and other terminals in Ukraine as Russia’s invasion of the country enters its second week.

At least three commercial ships have been hit by projectiles since February 24.

Two crew members from the Marshall Islands-flagged and Estonian-owned Helt cargo ship were in a life raft at sea while four others were unaccounted for, Igor Ilves, managing director of Tallinn-based manager Vista Shipping Agency, told the Reuters news agency on Thursday.
