We, the Git'luuhl'um'hetxwit, stand together in triumph and heartfelt appreciation, commemorating the momentous occasion of attaining permanent custody of our Gitxsan princess.

This triumph would not have been possible without the unwavering commitment of the Gitanmaax Band Council, who worked tirelessly to navigate the complex and often challenging legal landscape surrounding this case. We express our deepest thanks to everyone involved in safeguarding our young princesses' future, ensuring her connection to her ancestral roots, while upholding the rights and dignity of our people.

This milestone represents a significant step forward in the ongoing struggle to protect the cultural identity of Indigenous children in our communities. As our princess embarks on a new chapter of her life, surrounded by the love and support of her maternal family, we are reminded of the importance of perseverance and unity in advocating for the rights of our people.

While we rejoice in our princesses’ return, we recognize that numerous children remain separated from their ancestral roots, reminding us that our mission is far from complete; nevertheless, we remain steadfast and resolute, confident that through our collective determination, we shall reunite our children with their families and heritage, preserving our legacy as Gitxsan for future generations.

Community-Industry Response Group not welcome on Gitxsan lands, say chiefs

Git'luuhl'um'hetxwit Response to Enbridge requesting an Emergency Permit Extension from the B.C. Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, George Hayman.

We were notified by the province of this application on February 27, 2023. We were told the window for Indigenous consultation and input ends on March 3, 2023. We issued this response today, on March 1, 2023.

This project would cross Gitxsan land, including the Babine, Skeena, and Kispiox rivers.

Enbridge names the following huwilp as being directly affected: "Geel, Nii Kyap, Gitludahl, Tsa Buk, Gwii Yeehl, Wii Gyet, xGwoimtxw, Wii Mugulsw, Haiwaas, Miluulak, and Delgamuukw."

Enbridge names the following huwilp as having lax'yip in close proximity to the project: "Antgililbix, Wii Gaak, Wii Minosik, Luutkudziiwus, Kliiyem Lax Haa, Gyologyet, Djogaslee, Lelt, Mauus, Yal, Tenim Gyet, Wii Eelast, Giist, Baskyasinhlikit, and Gwininitxw."

Aside from the huwilp listed, there is no doubt that a project of this scale would impact all wilp up and down stream. Everyone has a say in the well-being of our salmon and the many other important species that could be impacted by this decision.

For more details listen to the video, or read the response itself posted in the comments section. If any Gitxsan want to reach out and/or receive a copy and/or template of this response, message this account.

🎥FULL VIDEO. Please check Yinka Dene Apparels ( https://gofund.me/9af142e2 ) to see if this is something you support. I want to get back into production as I press my original commissioned designs myself and open a store online.

Looking to get some fun designs out to the public and also release some informative street wear shedding light to issues we face as Indigenous peoples. Yinka has fundraisers lined up for two Wet’suwet’en families that had their loved ones taken away due to police violence/neglect. With the success of this go fund me, I’ll be able to release those memorial tees to the public.

I’d like to do this without government grants, investments from the people that will go back to the people through fundraisers makes this so much more meaningful. Thank you for your time. Feel free to share. Thank you to Delee for all the hard work in helping me get this out.

Speeches by Don Ryan (Maas Gaak, now holding the name of Hanaamukw) and Herb George (Satsan), in the feast hall following the 1997 Delgamuukw-Gisday'wa decision.

"I look at all the house groups of the Gitxsan. How are we going to take this victory now, how are we going to use it? The court came really close to saying to you - you have absolute victory, you have absolute title, and you have absolute government, your law has prevailed. The court stopped short of that, and we can force that issue, but it doesn't really make sense unless we see all of the house groups take on the responsibility of the laws, and take it forward. You can't sit and wait for the office that we've got in town, you can't sit and wait for the litigation team, you can't sit and wait for the legal team to do that. It has to come from all the house groups that are here today." - Don Ryan

Some parts of the video were not transferable to the the age of the VHS tapes, but the audio is complete.

An update from Spookw regarding the ongoing legal battle between the Gitxsan and CN Rail.

The recent statement from CN not proceeding with criminal charges may prove to be misleading, and as a result, the Gitxsan prepare to bring the full weight of our unextinguished title and Ayookw (Gitxsan Law) into play.

An update from Kai Nagata regarding the legal battle between CN Rail and the Gitxsan.

Kai tweets:

Private prosecution for criminal contempt HALTED.

Gitxsan land defenders have camped by the railway for two months in temperatures down to -35°C, a rugged show of tenacity matched by $100,000 in donations from the public for their legal defence.

On Friday, CN Rail blinked.

"In a statement to Castanet News on Friday, CN Rail said it will not wield the power granted to them.

“CN is satisfied that this injunction was ultimately enforced and does not intend to pursue criminal contempt against the protesters,” the company said in a one-line statement to Castanet News."

There is still a lot of work to do overturning CN's injunction on Gitxsan territory and ending the outrageous practice of private prosecution by corporations in B.C.

But this is a victory worth celebrating.

CN Rail could still try to prosecute Gitxsan people for civil contempt, but that opens the question of who is trespassing here.

CN could try to proceed with their $200m+ lawsuit for damages – that opens the question of how much they owe Indigenous people all over the continent.

I know Simogyet Spookw is ready to go to trial either way.

But if I were advising Bill Gates (CN Rail's largest investor) I would say fighting the Gitxsan in court is a dangerous gamble.

We pay our respects to Simoigyet Delgamuukw and Wilps' Delgamuukw of Anspayaxw. Earl's dedication to our culture and way of life has paved the way for many generations of Gitxsan. If not for such giants, we would not be here today. As the younger generations, we will do our best to keep the fire burning and honor the memory of those who showed us the way.

This is a speech by Delgamuukw from June 25th, 1993, following a victory at the BC Court of Appeals. "Our rights still flow, and they will flow forever".

An update regarding the ongoing legal battles with CN Rail and Canada. The Gitxsan position is firm, these are unceded lands and we will continue to push for title. The Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en have never surrendered a single inch of our territories.

Posted • BREAKING – RCMP INVASION EXPECTED ON WET’SUWET’EN TERRITORY

For the fourth time in four years, we have received information that dozens of militarized RCMP are en route to Wet’suwet’en territory, to facilitate construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline and to steal our unceded lands at gunpoint. We continue to hold the drill pad site, where Coastal Gaslink plans to tunnel beneath our pristine and sacred headwaters.

RCMP have booked up local hotels for the next month. We have also received word from the Union of BC Indian Chiefs that the C-IRG unit of the RCMP – the paramilitary unit that protects private industries who are seeking to destroy Indigenous lands – are being deployed onto our lands.

We need boots on the ground and all eyes on Wet’suwet’en territory as we continue to stand up for our lands, our waters, and our future generations! If you can’t be here, take action where you stand – at investors’ offices, RBC branches, or your local police detachment.

Amidst word that the RCMP C-IRG are gearing up to raid the retaken Coyote Camp on unceded Wet'suwet'en Yintah, new out of town officers wearing thin blue line patches are refusing to disclose their names or home detachments, while arbitrarily pulling over, questioning, and harassing Gitxsan peoples.

These are the poster children of the , demonstrating what reconciliation and nation-to-nation dialogue really means.

According to reports received, the RCMP will be devoting resources to "manage" the Gitxsan response while they invade our ally and ancient neighbor.

Gitxsan law, like Wet'suwet'en law, makes it clear, you need the permission of the house to do anything on house territory. The RCMP and CGL have not received the consent of the proper authorities to work and be present on the house territories.

30/12/2021

The BC Supreme Court rules that CN Rail, a privately owned corporation, can pursue criminal charges against the Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs who blocked a railway on unceded Gitxsan land, despite the fact that the Crown/Canada is not pursuing charges.

3 Gitxsan chiefs and 9 others were arrested in February of 2020, and these charges follow an ongoing lawsuit of over 270 million dollars directed at the Gitxsan people.

This is one of the reasons for the ongoing Gitxsan Land Defenders' Legal Fund fundraiser.

The root of the conflict lies within title to the land. Canada and BC have proven many times over that they will not accept the fact that Gitxsan culture and governance is still alive. Within treaty talks, they offer 4% of our total territories to remain ours as fee simple land. They also insist that we do not govern through our traditional system, and instead only govern as band councils.

To this day, the Gitxsan have not compromised our position that not one inch of this land belongs to Canada. Under Gitxsan law, it is CN who has trespassed on these lands for over a century. It is also CN that facilitated the intensive transport and theft of our resources.

Now Canada can not even control the mad dogs that are the private corporations unleashed on our territories, while the courts close their eyes and pretend we don't even exist as distinct peoples on unceded lands.

So much gratitude for everyone who has helped us reach and surpass the goal for the Gitxsan Land Defenders' Legal Fund. This is a huge relief and big step towards facing off with a massive multi-billion dollar private corperation. They are attempting to sue our chiefs and people for hundreds of millions of dollars, while pushing injunctions onto stolen land where Canada and CN hold no title. This is Gitxsan law vs the Crown and its corperate allies, and we will never back down when it comes to fighting for our livelihoods and Gitxsan way of life. They will rue the day they ever built those tracks through Gitxsan Lax'yip. Continued donations are more than welcome, and no doubt will be needed.

We will continue to post about developments as they arise with the court case. Stay tuned.

Tweet by Kris Statnyk reads:
"In addition to RCMP and CN Rail police surveilling the Gitxsan All Clans Railway Blockade camp, they now have “All Nations Security” in a vehicle decked out with a medicine wheel decal. “All Nations” is a subcontractor for SA Energy which is a subcontractor of Coastal Gaslink."

Essentially, we are seeing more and more pipeline resources mobilized into Gitxsan territory, where there is no pipeline. The degree of coordination between the RCMP, CN Police, and Coastal GasLink security is astounding. Each serving in unison the interests of private corporations.

Despite the combined hostility of Canada, BC, Industry, the RCMP, the Courts, and the Racism that persists within settler society, the fight pushes on. It needs to be made clear that silencing, brutalizing, and criminalizing sovereign indigenous peoples and their allies is no longer acceptable. We will not disappear, and we will always protect our culture and way of life. This is why Coastal GasLink must die. We need to make an example of this horrific project so that all of our descendants are safe from this pain. We are never going to find a new way forward if Canada thinks it can get away with the same thing over and over again.

Posted • 🏕 One month after dozens of arrests, supporters of Hereditary Chiefs have reoccupied a worksite on the pipeline route in the nation’s territory. Our northern B.C. reporter Amanda Follett Hosgood has the story:

The group announced Sunday they had returned to occupy Coyote Camp and block access to a strategic pipeline worksite.

The camp had been cleared in November after RCMP enforced an injunction against blocking access to Coastal GasLink worksites.

It was established in September on a spur road off the Morice West Forest Service Road about 100 kilometres southwest of Houston. It blocks access to the site where the pipeline company plans to drill under the Morice River, known to the Wet’suwet’en as Wedzin Kwa.

Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chief Na’Moks said today he visited the site on Sunday after Coastal GasLink security had been asked to leave.

“They had a security guy there. People went in there and just said, ‘Hey, we’re coming back here. That’s all there is to it.’ Everybody seemed to be in good spirits and glad they were back home where they had the cabin previously.”

Last month, RCMP arrested 30 people, including journalists Michael Toledano and Amber Bracken.

The camp was established two years ago in response to the injunction issued to the company by the B.C. Supreme Court.

Twenty-nine people face charges of civil contempt under the injunction and are expected to appear in court in February.
