*** How To Start Aquaponics ***

When you first hear about aquaponics, it sounds so amazing (and it is), but very quickly you can fall into overwhelm with โ€œnot knowing where to startโ€.

So, letโ€™s get you pointed in the right direction.

๐—Ÿ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป
What is your climate like? Temperate, Dry, Tropical, Subtropical? Freezing? How you do your aquaponics will vary based on your climate. It affects not only the type of fish you can keep, but also the type of veggies/ plants you can grow. So, narrow it down.

๐—œ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฟ
In some places ~ including if you rent or live in an apartment, indoor might be your only option, otherwise it can be a choice. Again, this can be based on your climate as well as room available.

๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐˜‡๐—ฒ
Linking with above, what size do you want to have? I always suggest people start with a small system before spending lots of money on a larger system, as with everything there is a learning curve. Aquaponics is a living ecosystem, and while we donโ€™t want any fish to die, it is less heartbreaking if we lose a cheap goldfish vs an expensive ornamental fish or edible fish.

๐—ง๐˜†๐—ฝ๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ต
Depending on your climate, size and if indoor or outdoor you need to decide the type of fish you want to grow. Starting off with an aggressive fish like trout or barramundi is challenging for a beginner. Always start with a โ€˜forgivingโ€™ fish like Silver Perch or Tilapia

๐—ฆ๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ ๐——๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ป.
Every system needs a fish tank, mechanical filter, and biological filter, it is the vegetable growing area that differs. You decide the best option (and you can mix them up) based on the veggies/ plants you want to grow. Top heavy plants like tomatoes donโ€™t do well in DWC or NFT systems, though they do great in growbeds. This purely will depend on what you want to grow.

The exciting thing about aquaponics is once you learn how it works, it is easy to expand and grow more.

*** Top 10 Aquaponics Tips to Get You Started ***

Aquaponics is growing fish and veggies together in one harmonious ecosystem. The fish provide liquid fertiliser for the veggies, and the veggies filter the water for the fish. This process happens with the help of nitrifying bacteria, which is present everywhere in nature.

My top 10 Aquaponics tips for you

1. Know your weather and climate, this will impact the fish you choose and the veggies/ plants you want to grow.
2. Be patient. Aquaponics is a marathon with lots of learning. Take your time, enjoy the steps. Remember you are creating sustainable food security, not a fast fix.
3. Start small, learn the skills, and understand the balance before you invest heavily. This will save you time, money, and energy later.
4. In knowing your climate, choose the type of fish you want to use, and make sure they are suitable.
5. Look after your fish first. Plants are easier to replace than fish, and in looking after your fish, the plants often look after themselves.
6. Cheap fish food can lead to unhealthy fish. Like us, they need a healthy diet which impacts the health of your veggies.
7. Design your aquaponics system based on what type of veggies you want to grow. Not every โ€˜typeโ€™ is suitable for every veggie. EG: NFT, DWC, and Growbed
8. You can never have too much biological filtration, but not enough can kill your fish.
9. Make sure there is enough oxygen in the system. Both plants and fish use oxygen, and without it, everything can die.
10. Tap water is ALWAYS treated, and the treatment is toxic to fish and the nitrifying bacteria. Find out how it is treated at the local water facility. You can counteract it naturally if you know what has been used.

Gravel for Growbed and the pH

The type of gravel or clay you use will determine the success or failure of your aquaponics system.

There are many types of gravel that you can safely use, and some that will impact the pH of the water.

Check out this video to learn how gravel can affect the pH ~ showing you how you can
work this out for the gravel you have in mind.

Knowing how to test the affect on the pH will help you when you buy gravel cheaply, as you can work out what is suitable and what isnโ€™t.

The desire to have an organic garden is to be healthy and not impact the environment. Unfortunately, while we may be happy to โ€˜shareโ€™ our produce with a few bugs, we donโ€™t want to lose the whole crop to bugs.

I know Iโ€™m happy to share, but not happy when they take a few bites out of everything!

Within aquaponics, finding natural ways to deter pests is important, as we do not want to affect the health of the aquatic ecosystem that we have created (as well as we donโ€™t want to impact our health!)

One method is to use companion planting ~ and here Iโ€™ll say, it works well in conjunction with other methods of natural pest control. It is not the โ€˜be all and end allโ€™. We are looking at repelling what we donโ€™t want and attracting the helpful bugs.

This guide will help you with the visual to see what plants help support others in our gardens. Not all are appropriate within aquaponics though, especially the mint family! They can create a bigger mess than โ€˜pestsโ€™.

The concept of companion planting is to plant โ€˜companion plantsโ€™ that will deter some of the pests, perhaps in scent or taste. They may get confused with the scents close together.

Companion planting can also create a physical deterrent for the pests ~ and when I say pest, remember that these animals are trying to survive, in some cases, humans are pests too!

While we want to deter pests, companion planting also helps with attracting โ€˜natural enemiesโ€™ to the pests, such as ladybugs. Lady bugs love aphids, which is a common pest in aquaponics.

So having companion planting around (and even a ladybug feeder) can attract the aphid's natural enemy and help control the numbers.

This guide can give you an idea of how to use some companion plants.

Emotional Regulation

Itโ€™s easy to find ourselves out of balance in life.

There is so much going on, that we can feel like we are being pulled in every direction.

This can easily lead to burnout or at least overwhelm.

In life, it is common when you are a caring person, that you put everyone else first before you.

Or maybe you were conditioned that way as a child, to meet everyone elseโ€™s needs before your own. I know I was.

This can be too much.

At this point, I watch my aquaponics system to remind me of balance.

You see, everything about aquaponics is balanced. Without balance, it doesnโ€™t work

Balancing the fish to plant, the nitrifying bacteria, the water, the flow โ€“ everything is about balance.

Watching the balance happen can help us to find our own balance, and see that natureโ€™s wayโ€ฆ is balance

When we struggle to balance our emotions, it can be helpful to sit and watch something in balance, see how it is regulating itself, and we can often then reg...

One of the best things about aquaponics is that it comes in all different shapes and sizes, but still keeps the same fundamentals across all the designs.

As aquaponics is a sustainable ecosystem that uses fish waste to grow healthy veggies, a key point is to understand that it is all about balance.

No overstocking with fish or veggies, rather keeping a healthy balance between the two.

Every aquaponics system, matter the size has these components:
โ€ข A fish tank
โ€ข A mechanical filter (collect the solid fish waste from the system)
โ€ข A biological filter (converting the liquid fish waste into useable fertiliser for the veggies
โ€ข A growing area for the veggies (this could be a growbed, NFT system, rafts/ deep water culture, or towers)
โ€ข A water pump to move the water around (1 is often all that is needed)
โ€ข And a sump for larger systems.

When you understand how these elements work together, your ecosystem is balanced easily which means healthy food for you and your family.

As in life, there are many โ€˜branchesโ€™ of aquaponics, and when you branch out when inexperienced, it can get very confusing. Staying focused on keeping it simple, get an understanding of how it works, and it will be easier to learn and understand the balance of the ecosystem.

At its core, aquaponics needs to be simple and easy to stay in balance and to make it easy for you to look after daily.

A small system can be looked after in a few minutes every day.
Prevention is better than cure and keep it simple.

You will then have sustainable, healthy food for you and your family for years to come.

** What Veggies Can You Grow in Aquaponics? **
The veggies that you grow in aquaponics are organic, free from pesticides and toxins ~ isnโ€™t that wonderful?

No matter the size, what you grow is healthy.

The question is, what can you grow?

Pretty much anything will grow in aquaponics ~ which is great, however some things you need to consider your design to make it work best.

For instance, you can grow root crops in aquaponics, however they prefer a flood & drain system not the constant flow water within a growbed. If you want root crops, you need the growbed, they wont work in NFT or DWC.

You can grow vines (like pumpkins or watermelon), climbers like cucumbers, bushes of tomatoes or eggplants, corn, zucchini, capsicums, ginger, turmeric, basils, chives ~ almost anything will grow with the right design.

What you donโ€™t want to grow within aquaponics is anything from the mint family.

This includes catnip, catmint, spearmint, mint etc.

Mint has very invasive roots, and it is often considered a pest in the soil, it is worse within an aquaponics system as the root system become so large that it clogs the pipes.

Remember whatever you choose to grow, aquaponics is about balance and you need to balance the amount of veggies and the size, with the amount of fertiliser that the fish are producing.

** Location **
As with everything in life, aquaponics too is about location.

๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด
Good lighting for the plants, yet no strong weather that will impact the system itself.

The plants need at least 6 hours of sunlight to be healthy, however some plants need to have full sun, and others part shade ~ it depends on the type of plants you are growing.

When it comes to setting up your aquaponics system, lighting is one thing to consider ~ whether it is inside or outside.

๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ
Within aquaponics, the water pump needs to run 24 hours/ 7 days a week, so your site choice needs to ensure that you have access to power.

Getting a water proof electrical box can help ensure safety here.

Some people do aquaponics on solar, which you can IF you can work out a way to have constant power for the water pump during the night and on stormy days.

Often with a deep-cycle battery setup, this is possible, though it can get expensive.

๐—ช๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ
While aquaponics is the most sustainable form of gardening, using less water than your average soil garden, you still need to be able to fill up the system to begin with and top it up as required.

Water exchanges and system purges arenโ€™t needed in aquaponics due to is cycling nature, however, water does evapourate, more so in some climates, and the plants themselves use water as they grow. Remember, that water makes up more than 90% of everything.

As the plants grow, they use more water and as they transpire they use water, so ongoing topping up is needed, however minimal.

Having easy access to water is important, whether it is rain water or town water than you have dechlorinated previously.

So, when you are setting up your aquaponics system ~ think of your location for the sun, power and water.

Every place is unique, so consider what will work for you.

** Mini Aquaponics **
Mini or benchtop aquaponics can be a great to get started, give it a go and see if you like the fish keeping aspect.

Whatโ€™s important though, is to have the appropriate expectations when it comes to how much you can grow.

Many people buy small setups online and the images arenโ€™t real, or are misleading.

Fish need aeration and a biological filter to survive. Plants need water, fertiliser and oxygen in the water if their roots are submerged.

Aquaponics is all about balance, which means balancing the amount of fish to the amount of filtration available, as well as the amount of water ~ giving them room to grow.

Too many fish will result in big issues.

Not enough fish, and there is not enough fertiliser available for the herbs.

Itโ€™s about balance.

Before buying or making, research the amount of water each fish you want to get needs, and ensure you have enough filtration.

I always suggest starting with the fish, making sure the system is โ€˜cycledโ€™, which means colonised with nitrifying bacteria, and get an idea of the amount of fertiliser that is available within the system, then look at the plants.

Remember, little fish produce small amounts of fertiliser.

Little plants (seedlings) use small amounts of fertiliser.

However, the fish wont grow very much, but the plants will ~ and the amount of fertiliser will remain the same.

Find the balance to make it work.

After 15 years of practicing backyard aquaponics, as well as my professional training in aquaculture, I have produced something that is relevant to EVERY aquaponics system and EVERYONE who is learning about aquaponics.

I'm sharing this as I don't want people to experience the same thing that happened to me 15 years ago.

You build an aquaponics system, are proud of it, it runs well for a while then you walk out to find everything dead.

I remember that moment so vividly, I remember the heartbreak

To learn aquatic husbandry and teach others the key elements needed, in a simple, easy-to-understand way so they don't experience that despair.

This led me on a journey that included studying aquaculture, working in the industry, volunteering at major aquariums, designing aquatic exhibits at a Marine Discovery Centre, and helping people to build their own backyard aquaponics systems.

All the 'stuff' that I 'just know' know, is logical and second nature to me now, I have written it down and offering it to you today.

But here's the thing, it wasn't always second nature.

I had to learn it too, so rather than you spend all that time, energy and physical effort in the commercial field learning, I have popped this wisdom into a digital book.

Introducing:
๐—˜๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜†

* Choosing your location
* Choosing the system size and type
* What 'parts' you need and the components you can use
* Choosing your Fish
* Water quality
and so much more... 101 tips that help you understand WHY something is important.

Seriously, this digital book is ๐—š๐—ข๐—Ÿ๐——.

You don't know what you don't know, and this helps you to know what you need to know.

There is something for everyone in Ecosystem Harmony, no matter what stage you are at with aquaponics.

Yep, this is a no-brainer.

If you have been wanting to start aquaponics and didn't know where to start, this is the digital book for you.
