There were so many cool things about this wedding that l don't know where to begin. The best part for me was definitely the fact that Jen and I have been able to get to know the bride and groom pretty well over the past year. Seeing their relationship develop, and then having a front row seat to the wedding day was a real privilege.
Another thing you’ll notice is all of the men in uniform! Danny is a helicopter pilot in the NAVY, and a graduate of the US Naval Academy, and his wedding party definitely reflects that. So many dress whites, including Danny’s brother, Chris, but my favorite uniforms were definitely worn by the US Marine Corps officers in attendance! Being surrounded by so many servicemen really brought me a renewed sense of gratitude to this young generation’s commitment to our nation.
One unexpected blessing on this wedding day was the opportunity to work with Photographer Laina Tortoricci of Compass Wedding Collective. She was very patient and helpful with me and I really learned a ton from her. One thing she did was find a wooded trail on the church property to do a beautiful photo/video shoot. I would never have thought about finding a place like that… it was not easy to find, and her efforts really paid off in the video and I’m sure is also true of her photos.
The day was amazing, but it definitely brought some challenges. I’ll just share one.lol. I thought I had a very specific cinematic color profile loaded into my camera (this is a way to dial in lots of characteristics like color, depth of black, saturation, contrast...all that stuff.) This makes the editing process much less laborious when your picture is close to where you want it right out of the camera. Well, half way through the day, I noticed that the profile was not active. I must have unknowingly changed this setting. I really felt sick...but I couldn't let it show. I told myself that I have to act like a professional and move on and not let this mistake cause a downward spiral leading to more mistakes. So I hid my disappointment and pressed on. In the end, my editing time was significantly extended, but nothing was ruined, and I think this pain will ensure that I don't make that mistake twice. Actually I’ll share another mistake that I only realized yesterday. There was some beautiful congregational singing during the wedding service. Actually, “beautiful” doesn’t cut it. “Oh Lord, My Rock and My Redeemer” was powerful, and very moving, considering the symbolism of Christ and his Church on display with the present ceremony. What an opportunity to use this in the video! The recording I got on the ceremony was good enough quality to use, so it became a foundation of the highlight film. Well, after uploading it to YouTube I was alerted that I was violating the Copyright by using that music in the film. Lesson learned. The video had to be re-edited using the other song in the film (and the only song in the trailer). No big deal…thankfully the bride loved that replacement song, and, I think, had already bonded with it in the trailer ;)
Another awesome part of this wedding day was the reception. Specifically, the dancing. The DJ Sam Huxford really did an awesome job. There were sooooo many people dancing… like the entire time...the video doesn't lie-it was super fun..
But man, what really made this a special day was the main thing...Marriage is a symbol of Christ and the Church. “Husbands, love our wives as Christ loves the Church and gave himself up for her.” Seeing the desire of the bride and groom to honor this symbolic union was the most powerful part of the day. It's really THE reason that I love weddings.
Congratulations Danny and Sarah!
Love,
James and Jen
