The Eku Masquerade: A Celebration with Roots in Ebira Culture

It is unfortunate to note that the traditional OSOSO masquerade practice in Edo State, also known as Eku Ane, has deviated from its original purpose. This practice, which originated from the Ebira people's Eche Ane celebration, was historically a symbol of unity and joy.

Research reveals that this tradition was introduced by an Ebira brother-in-law to the Ani OSOSO community as a means of fostering cohesion and celebration. However, over time, the youth have hijacked this practice, using it as an opportunity for harassment, oppression, disruption, vandalism, and bullying.

This is unacceptable and requires immedi isate attention. It is imperative that the Chief Maker of Ebiraland intervenes, inviting the perpetrators for education and disciplinary measures.

Eche Ane masquerading was never intended to be a harmful practice, but rather a celebration of unity and heritage. It is essential that we reclaim this tradition and restore its original purpose.

EBIRA NATION ANTHEM: Transliterations

Ebira, our fatherland so dear,
Till my dying breath, I'll serve you here,
With honesty, love, and progress in sight,
I'll stand for your greatness, day and night.

Just as our ancestors stood united as one,
In ancient days, beneath the rising sun,
They worked together, hand in hand,
To build a legacy that would forever stand.

Let us strive to make our efforts count,
To labor with love, and never falter or doubt,
May our endeavors be fruitful and bright,
For the glory of Ebira, our guiding light.

I accept the fate that's meant for our land,
For the well-being of our people, hand in hand,
May God Almighty bless our noble quest,
And guide us forever, as we stand as one, and do our best.

Oh God, we pray, accept our fate,
And bless Ebira, our nation, our home, our state.
