#LightUpLebo is something my town does where everyone puts out luminarias to support cancer research and those of us affected by cancer.
This year, I had to add two names—one survived and the other did not. #CancerSucks
Video description: camera is panning my front lawn in the dark where I've got 5 white bags each with a lit candle inside and a name written on the front. In order of appearance:
Keith Watkins (my father-in-law, #CancerSurvivor, died in 2019).
Ellen Watkins (my mother-in-law, died of cancer when partner was 13)
Sasha M (local friend of mine, survivor)
Heather R. (online friend, died of cancer)
Brenda Porter (local friend's mom, died of cancer in 2023)
Lisa S. (local friend of mine, survivor)
Bethany F (local community member, died of cancer)
Kathy C (childhood family friend, survivor)
Vanessa M (local friend, currently fighting)

Came across this video from someone who's parents did not tell them that they were autistic or ADHD as a child and learned about it on their own as an adult.
I often get asked by parents if they should tell their kids, what the pros and cons are for telling vs not telling, and when they should tell them.
I always say yes, please tell your kids. Celebrate it with them. If they can recognize that they have different hair, skin, height, etc. from their peers, they can handle learning that their brain works differently too.

I love what she said. The moment you prioritize what identity you see, you're leaving a part of yourself behind. #Intersectionality is so important

What Does Autism Look Like?
In slides 2 and 3 of my presentation about autistic masking, I discuss the physical features of autism and the stereotypes people think of when they tell me I don't look autistic as if it were a compliment. Spoiler: it's not.
Just finished reading A Day With No Words by Fidgets and Fries to my 4yo and husband for bedtime.
The video was captured right after we opened it this afternoon. Kiddo likes to become familiar with books first before we read them, and she recently learned how to flip pages so that was a fun stim.
The illustrations by Kate Cosgrove are amazing. The ice cream sundae stopped her in her tracks. Without even reading the page (because kiddo can't read), she understood Aiden's pain. She called it an "ice cream ache" (which most of us know as "brain freeze").
But back to the bedtime story, the moment I read, "I do not speak," she curiously asked why. I was glad I didn't have to form an answer, I just turned the page and it explained how he was born that way, that he's autistic, and that he uses a tablet.
Kiddo lit up and then infodumped to my husband and I about how she doesn't talk sometimes (situational mutism) and that we use sign language during those times.
At the end of the story, my husband even asked, "so the mom uses a tablet too?" and I said yes, and explained how she models his method of communication so he can see an adult using it in the world, and it helps so that Aiden isn't the first person that people meet who use a tablet and have the awkwardness of figuring out how to communicate with an AAC user. Instead, he's the second ;)
Y'all have an amazing family. Thank you for sharing it with us in this book 🖤
Brief History of Autism
Last year for Rep. Dan Miller's Disability & Mental Health Summit, I gave a 45-minute presentation called "Unmasking Autism" to a live audience.
Unfortunately, it wasn't recorded so I've started recording parts of it at home. Don't ask me why I started with slide 4, maybe it's because it's my favorite. But I'll record and release them one slide at a time to make the information more easily digestible.
The topic for this slide is called the Brief History of Autism and it's just over 7 minutes long.
Here is a link to the video embedded on my website where it includes subtitles and a full transcription if this Facebook video doesn't add them automatically.

Editing to add TW: he uses the term "narcissistic" to describe a person that may or may not have NPD. It's unknown if they're using it to exaggerate selfish behavior (ableism) or if it's an accurate description of that person's neurology.
Loaded the #PointAndPlayBanners in the car and dropped them off at Dr. Irvin's office
I considered driving them around for a few weeks first 🫠

All #PointAndPlayBanners have arrived for the Mt. Lebanon School District !!
Budding opinion: there is no such thing as #WhiteFragility
Call it what it is: #WhiteRage #WhiteBigotry #WhiteHate #WhiteSupremacy
Calling it fragile is a disservice. We shouldn't prioritize the comfort of 🌾 people by coddling their feelings and treating them as fragile beings. As she says, they are anything but fragile.

Trying this new app for tracking meds and I clicked "take" but instead of satisfying the reminder, it added a second entry. So I clicked the reminder and the button to remove the duplicate said, "untake" and all I could imagine was Stitch lmao

I can hardly contain my excitement!! Mt. Lebanon Municipality - Government has signed up to be a member of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard - North America !!!
Our Fire Chief Nick Sohyda has taken the lead on this so I expect we'll hear from the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department about the details soon, like when and where people can pick up their very own lanyards 🖤
Remember, these lanyards are for FREE to anyone who wants one
Even Just 1 Voice can make a difference, but we're #StrongerTogether
