My unique intersection consists of being gender fluid (which my particular flavor falls under the non-binary umbrella and I embrace the transgender identity), autistic, a parent, disabled, mentally ill, and white. I weaponize my privileges to advocate for myself and others. I work professionally as a programmer in the marketing industry. My pronouns are they/them. I consider this public page as an
outlet for my advocacy efforts. And because I couldn't choose which identity to throw at the front, I landed on just being one voice of many. While it's true that one person can make a difference, so can a collective. Advocacy, especially, isn't just about me. I don't have first-hand experience in all of the marginalized identities so I also like to amplify their voices. I am just one voice of many.

Probably the only time my child will happily exclaim, "I got anxiety!"
We saw it at the cinema for Father's Day. We loved the movie, I only have one criticism.
Both my partner and child are diagnosed with generalized anxiety, mine is of the panic disorder variety. For them, anxiety is always at the console, perhaps the lead. Their anxiety goes up and down but their baseline is higher than general population. In general, their peaks and troughs are not as extreme.
For me, anxiety only shows up if triggered and when triggered, they just go fu***ng bonkers. My baseline of anxiety is normal, maybe below normal, but my peaks and troughs are quite extreme.
The criticism I have is that they introduced anxiety as a result of puberty starting. Perhaps in Riley's case, that's her first experience with these other emotions. But for my child, they were diagnosed with GAD at the age of 3. Yes, it can manifest that young.
So if you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it. It's been very helpful to explain the physical symptoms of anxiety (like when someone is overwhelmed, feeling malaise, headaches, or snapping for asking them a question) by describing what is happening "at their console"

Came across this video from someone who's parents did not tell them that they were autistic or ADHD as a child and learned about it on their own as an adult. I often get asked by parents if they should tell their kids, what the pros and cons are for telling vs not telling, and when they should tell them. I always say yes, please tell your kids. Celebrate it with them. If they can recognize that they have different hair, skin, height, etc. from their peers, they can handle learning that their brain works differently too. In slides 2 and 3 of my presentation about autistic masking, I discuss the physical features of autism and the stereotypes people think of when they tell me I don't look autistic as if it were a compliment. Spoiler: it's not.
Just finished reading A Day With No Words by Fidgets and Fries to my 4yo and husband for bedtime. The video was captured right after we opened it this afternoon. Kiddo likes to become familiar with books first before we read them, and she recently learned how to flip pages so that was a fun stim. The illustrations by Kate Cosgrove are amazing. The ice cream sundae stopped her in her tracks. Without even reading the page (because kiddo can't read), she understood Aiden's pain. She called it an "ice cream ache" (which most of us know as "brain freeze"). But back to the bedtime story, the moment I read, "I do not speak," she curiously asked why. I was glad I didn't have to form an answer, I just turned the page and it explained how he was born that way, that he's autistic, and that he uses a tablet. Kiddo lit up and then infodumped to my husband and I about how she doesn't talk sometimes (situational mutism) and that we use sign language during those times. At the end of the story, my husband even asked, "so the mom uses a tablet too?" and I said yes, and explained how she models his method of communication so he can see an adult using it in the world, and it helps so that Aiden isn't the first person that people meet who use a tablet and have the awkwardness of figuring out how to communicate with an AAC user. Instead, he's the second ;) Y'all have an amazing family. Thank you for sharing it with us in this book 🖤
Last year for Rep. Dan Miller's Disability & Mental Health Summit, I gave a 45-minute presentation called "Unmasking Autism" to a live audience.
