Best way to improve New York State Deer Hunting? ( Yep ... I opened that can of whoop ass)!
With 40 ( plus) Hunting seasons in my past, I have seen a lot of changes. Gone are the days of seeing hunters vehicles lining the roads and driveway of every farm and wood lot. Gone are the days of successful hunters hanging their deer from a branch on the maple in the front yard or from a basketball hoop on the garage. Taking pics with the old Polaroid and then waiting to see if the pics were any good so you could share them with friends. The Monday Opening Day, which would draw hunters in to our area on the Friday before, and the stores, restaurants, gas stations and bars would be packed with locals as well as those from out of town. Oh ... the traditions!!!
I read posts daily that reflect these same thoughts ... right before I scroll and see more pics of some amazing NY bucks! It seems deer hunting in this state has become " the glass half full or the glass half empty"! ( And, please, the " is my hunt ruined" post is only funny the first 30 or 40 times.
Personally, I love the NY outdoors. It is without question a beautiful place for the outdoorsman and woman. Ya just have to get out there.
I also think we have become a " Sleeper State" for big bucks!!! Never before have I seen so many big deer killed during a hunting season.
The DEC will tell you that lisence sales remain strong or are increasing. That may be. But, where are all the hunters??? I don't see them. I donthear the shots fired that I remember from my youth. It could be that hunters have just become more selective. I know I have. Or, possibly we have a larger group of Opening Day hunters who never return to the woods that season. I don't have the answer. Only theories .... like lack of access, more families working longer hours and multiple jobs, traditions not being passed on. If we lose our youth, we will lose our sport, and if you think it can't happen, just go to your local high school and look at how many athletic programs have had to merge to get the numbers, or have just totally dropped programs. Social media, for all the enjoyment we get from it, is also keeping a large number of Youth hunters home.
The ongoing " battle" between what I will refer to as the Trophy hunters vs. the guy/ gal who just wants to shoot a deer ( doe, spike, yearling) will never end. And I am not condemning either side.
I have always been a " my tag / my choice " ki d of hunter. I didn't grow up learning to trophy hunt. It was all horns the first week and does from there on. We hunted because we loved the outdoors, camaraderie, laughs and yes ... the Venison!
It just seems to me that the majority of people that want Antler restrictions for all, also want multiple tags, endless seasons and the opportunity to hunt with any weapon they want. And, that's fine, cuz like I said, my tag/ my choice. If it's legal and gets your heart thumping ... go for it!!!
But, personally, I think we need to go another direction. Keeping in mind, that I will not boo-hoo any hunter for taking a legal deer, here is what I would change ... based on NY Southern Zone ...
Archery not opening til atleast mid October
( I personally am still on the fence on X-bows. Just not sure where they should be in all of this).
Regular Season Fi****ms Opening Monday of Thanksgiving week.
Slug guns only.
2 people per DMP, with no DMP's issued every third year.
No Holiday hunt.
Not looking to start an argument, just looking for your own " experienced based opinions". The DEC can't please everybody, and we all pay enough in taxes and lisence fees to have an OPINION!
HAPPY HUNTING AND GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
