Deb JJ Lee (they), is an award-winning graphic novelist and artist - creator of IN LIMBO, which tells Deb’s Korean American coming of age story.
When we aired an episode earlier this year about IN LIMBO from Quarantined Comics, and @jdebbiel got in touch with us. So, we invited them onto our pod!
Deb shares their experiences growing up between two cultures. For a while, Deb’s English wasn’t perfect. Teachers could not pronounce their Korean name. Who else can relate?
As we learned in this ranging conversation with Deb - this was a work they had to do, to not just work through a story, but to find closure in the aftermath. This story is painfully familiar, and brings forth a lot of empathy for those around us invisibly struggling.

“Even in Tulsa, the place where this happened, this was not widely known. I felt writing something that could ground the story and the people there would be honestly a valuable contribution to our nation's understanding of itself.”
Get ready to dive into history as we sit down with Victor Luckerson @vluck89, the incredible author behind the new release "Built from the Fire."
The @nytimes named “Built from the Fire'' an editor’s choice pick, calling it "absorbing" and "outstanding."
Join both Sharon and Raman as we unravel the captivating story of Tulsa's Greenwood District and the unforgettable 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre - and learn how Victor came to tell this story.
On May 30, 1921, a mob terrorized the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, a flourishing black business district affectionately called Black Wall Street.
