I was setting up the Saturday night playlist for Rocking 70s's Dragging Main and looked up the Cheech and Chong song "EARACHE MY EYE"

I didn't realize the big stations had such a problem with this back in the 1970s. Interesting read here.

We'll be playing that one along with a lot more 70s rock Saturday night 8-Midnight on KEZL-FM 89.7

KICX played this a lot if I recall. Didn't realize there was drama some places!

"Earache My Eye" is a comedy routine and song by Cheech and Chong from their 1974 album Cheech & Chong's Wedding Album. The skit is about a teenager (played by Tommy Chong) who wakes up and listens to a song by "Alice Bowie" (Cheech Marin), while his father (also played by Marin) yells at him to get...

KEZL FM Radio's 2nd Anniversary is coming up September 8th.

KEZL has strived to provide you with music and programming you'll hear no place else; to be mom and pop radio for the folks. We bring you beautiful music - easy listening throughout the week, gospel on Sunday mornings, country music on Saturday mornings and Draggin' Main Saturday Night 70s rock on Saturday evenings. We've been your true variety station. Public Independent Non Commercial Radio is unlike any radio you've been accustomed to hearing. We cannot sell advertising, and do not have any advertising ever. That is a plus in our view- No ads ever!

For the first time in June, 2024 your contributions to the station have covered the actual expenses! Congratulations. It looks like we made it....

Yes folks, We have reached our monthly fundraising goal for the first time. If this continues then we will not change our current beautiful music format to something else.
This station should be completely self sufficient with a little help from our friends.
Now we have to keep this up every month. Then we can plan for improvements to the station. We still need to build a radio studio followed by eventually increasing power to 100,000 watts and constructing a taller tower so the folks can receive the signal better.

We hear from all over, far and wide, from folks that enjoy the station, however very few actually send over a few $$$ to help the station pay the music license fees, electric bills and insurance.

Don't count on rich people to foot the bill, rich people never contribute towards the bill unless it is to their advantage. all great things are done by the grassroots little people, the regular poor folks like you and me.

So at this point it looks like the station format can remain as it is provided you keep those contributions coming at this level and above.

That don't mean its time to relax this means its time to press on. Ask businesses you deal with to underwrite the FM station...ask folks you know to listen to 89.7 FM.

For future thinking We need to raise an additional 3,000 per month to offset electrical costs to increase power to 100,000 watts. We already own the equipment we just need to afford the increased power bill KEZL-FM should be the shining jewel of radio- the pride of SW Nebraska.

It was our hope that we could do something different for the folks, rather than the same old thing and you have responded positively.

KEZL has a huge audience increasing every day all by word of mouth thanks to you, the folks.

Your gifts are tax deductible, KEZL is a 501 c3 Public benefit charity. No one makes any salaries, all workers are volunteer, and only the expenses of the station are paid from your gifts and contributions. If everyone sends in a little each month, then none of us have to send in a lot.

You may mail in a little something to KEZL PO Box 35, Culbertson, NE 69024, Visit our website KEZLFM.COM or call our offices 308-345-9500.

If you have a business or practice of any kind you should be underwriting the area's only Independent Public Radio Station KEZL.

Thank you for your support.

This week on the Jerry Kautz Country Road Show it's our Father's Day big broadcast. We'll play some tunes for, of and about Dads. We'll talk about old times in the KEZL FM listening area. Life's experiences, some we'd rather forget, but all of which make us grow into who we are in the end.
We'll talk a bit this week about dealing with customers in a retail setting can make you go crazy, the time I was out of state with two different license plates on my car thanks to a mistake at the courthouse and how a big bellied southern sheriff handled that situation. Talk about the time I went to visit relatives in a far off place and they loaded up my shopping cart with goodies they wanted me to buy for them. Taking a family out to eat in a nice restaurant and they let their snot nosed kids order steak everyone knows they will never eat just to run my bill up. And how you can never get employees to be truly loyal to the company in everything they do. Things like that.

I'll tell a very expensive proposition of when my company sent two guys to Mississippi and one of them is still in the penitentiary doing 55 years. Be careful who you ride with is the lesson there.
These and other great adventures, stories from our listeners and other interesting tidbits on the Jerry Kautz Country Road Show, Saturday mornings from 8-10 AM, join us won't you, it won't be the same without you- We'll be looking for ya!

Just a heads up!

KEZL FM Radio's 2nd Anniversary is coming up September 8th. KEZL has strived to provide you with music and programming you'll hear no place else; to be mom and pop radio for the folks. Bringing you beautiful music - easy listening throughout the week, gospel on Sunday mornings, country music on saturday mornings and Draggin Main Saturday Night 70s rock on Saturday evenings. We've been your true variety station. Public Independent Non Commercial Radio is unlike any radio you've been accustomed to hearing. We cannot sell advertising, and do not have any advertising ever.

After 2 years, KEZL is still not receiving enough in listener support to keep the light bill paid.
If you enjoy KEZL then now is your last chance to save the station as it is with the beautiful music format. We hear from all over, far and wide, from folks that enjoy the station, however very few actually send over a few $$$ to help the station pay the music license fees, electric bills and insurance.

Therefore on September 8th our anniversary date, this station will drop the beautiful music format completely and it will be lost forever, and will embrace a new format (Trust me, you won't like it) yet to be announced.

Those of you that enjoy the station as it is will most certainly NOT enjoy the new format.
It was our hope that we could do something different for the folks, rather than the same old thing. Folks say they like variety, but really it seems they want the same.

If we can reach our fundraising goal by September 8th then we will continue this format, if not, big changes are in store. This station should be completely self sufficient with a little help from our friends. No one makes any salaries, all workers are volunteer, and only the expenses of the station are paid from your gifts and contributions. If everyone sends in a little each month, then none of us have to send in a lot.

This week on the Jersey Cow country road show, Sat 8-10 we have some great country music you'll hear no place else. We'll talk about this, that and the other thing....including some newspaper articles of the past.

It's swimming pool season so we'll have a few pool stories and tell about swimming pool history in Indianola, the Big C and Palisade...which go back to 1913

We have a lot of listener submitted stories we like to tell on the air. Make sure you think of something that happened in your life and send it in to us for broadcast. Folks love the stories others tell more than anything else we do on this show.

We like to talk about the station KEZL, (KEZL- Keep East Listening) What it's about, what is Non-Profit radio for the folks and how can you help or participate?

This week we talk about a Culbertsonite that grew up in a covered wagon south of town yet became famous, the time I made a lady cry with my organ playing talents, (probably not that hard to do) and the time we moved 110 sets of organ pipes from New York to Houston only for them to have a very unhappy ending. We have a story about how some old local gals handled a smoking ban at bingo games and other delightful stories you'll hear no place else.

It's mom and pop radio for the folks, indeed, radio you can enjoy. A Listener wrote in saying they can't believe there can even be radio like this these days in the midst of big corporations taking over all the stations. That KEZL was truly a dream weaving radio station for the folks. Of course we are happy to hear these remarks and all we can say is you haven't seen anything yet with regards to KEZL being radio for the folks, here to help you weave your dreams into reality.

Beautiful music all week long, Rocking Saturday nights with 70s' Draggin' Main from 8-12, Gospel Sunday Mornings, and Country Saturday mornings....variety radio for the folks- That's us KEZL 89.7 - 89 point Wonderful on your FM dial.

Saturday morning 8-10AM on the Jerry Kautz Country Road Show we showcase 116 years of service from the Culbertson Women's Club with some history to go along with it.

We have several listener stories to get to including one telling us about Pioneer Village in Minden, and another about some murders in Kearney back in the early days that we never heard about. This story makes last week's Anna Cook of Lincoln County pale in comparison. Another listener writes in how he avoided taking his nephews and nieces to Disneyland and another about meeting people from our listening area when in far away places.

We talk about getting stuck in the mud as a kid walking home from school, getting lost in the forest, how your friends are secretly not all happy when you get something new like a car and some stories remembering Two Ton Tony Martin one of the most popular djs from KFNF radio back in the 70s.

We get to hear the story of Ralph the Clown from Trenton and some other tales of life's adventures as always heard on KEZLFM 89.7 ...not to mention the long forgotten tale of Bambi "Boom Boom" Abromowitz and square dancing in the streets of Beautiful Downtown Culbertson back in the day.

All this and more on this morning's Jerry Kautz Country Road Show 89.7 FM KEZL, Hitchcock County's only radio station.

This morning on the Jerry Kautz Country Road Show, we have our Memorial Day show. We talk about memorial day activities in days of yesteryear. We talk about days before air conditioning. How did people survive? We have an unsung hero award for a former Trenton resident, We have a happy piano story and two sad :( piano stories from Nebraska.

We have several listener stories to get to including one telling us the difference between hobos, tramps and bums!

Then 113 years ago this very week, 2 Burlington Trains collided in the fog by Indianola, NE killing 18 and injuring 32.

What about Anna Cook of Lincoln County? She ran the depression era poor farm ruthlessly Lots of strange murders, including that of her own daughter. All over looked by the county at the time. Her activities spawned at least one book, and a Hollywood movie contract. Movie yet to be made.

I talk about citified government workers, proposed FCC paperwork increases on radio stations that are totally absurd. If the DJ is in the bathroom and the record skips, does that have to be reported within 2 hours, and followed up on with a full report later?

We have another wonderful Angel story where there was divine intervention when needed most.

All this and more on this morning's Jerry Kautz Country Road Show 89.7 FM KEZL, Hitchcock County's only radio station.

Be sure to join yours truly for the Jerry Kautz Country Road show Saturday mornings 8-10 on KEZL-FM 89.7. We play some great country music you won't hear anyplace, tell about life's experiences, read stories sent in by listeners and talk about area history and what not. You'll enjoy the program, I'm certain, as it's radio for the folks, not radio out of New York or California but radio you'll enjoy.

This week we're going to talk about how getting old has its privileges, the time I was snow bound in an expensive truck stop restaurant that wasn't worth a quarter, playing hooky from school back in the day to road run up to Grand Island, out to Denver or the like.... I talk about some things that happened and things I learned when I was vacationing in Vietnam a few years back.... and we even ponder if past lives are possible.
I'll tell you about two young guys I know that decided they were going to go to Hollywood and be movie stars and how that turned out. Yes you can dream, but that might be all it is.

You'll be listening to vacuum tubes today even if you are streaming the signal. There are 3 high power vacuum tubes in the transmitter on the air today, a McMartin Transmitter from the 1970s made in Omaha, Nebraska.

The big one is the final tube which makes the most power and then there are two of the smaller tubes which are an intermediate stage in the transmitter. Nothing beats the warm sound of vacuum tubes.

KEZL isn't the first radio station in Hitchcock County!
Many folks might remember this. This is quasi Culbertson-Trenton it was south of town by Cornell.
John Underhill died a few years ago. He was pretty young when he did this. I had read this article many years ago. When I was in High School the Janitor Ken Brenning told us all about this. I remember calling up John Underhill in the 70's and asking him about it, but he didn't want to comment too much on it.
The station covered as far as Kearney and was made out of whatever they could find. "Engineers marvelled at the ability of the makeshift transmitter"
I remember one of my Aunts Veda Lewis from Trenton played the piano and sang on that station back in the day.
It was a wonderful thing in the 1940's but there was only one problem they forgot to get a license first.

89.7 KEZL FM has been looking for a studio space. Wouldn't it be fun to broadcast from a barn! KEZL isn't Hitchcock County's first radio station back in the 1930's John Underhill broadcast from his farm out in Cornell, NE. The stories about that have been posted elsewhere, you can probably find them or we can repost them here. I envision him broadcasting like this and this was back in those days! Everything was fine until the FCC showed up and shut it all down! Those were the days. We would to do some live radio, hopefully when we get a studio we can keep the cats out. This clip shows Mickey Mouse broadcasting and the cats ruining the live program. A really fun clip you will enjoy.

Saturday 8-10AM on the Jerry Kautz show we'll have a ghost or angel visiting story from McCook, We'll talk about the big gold rush southeast of Trenton and elsewhere around SW Nebraska back in the 1930s. They even put an assay office in McCook to handle the rush on testing gold ore. With Gold prices inching towards 3000$ an ounce is it time to hunt for gold again? We'll talk about a big murder in Palisade in 1922 where like today, the alleged killer was out on bond the next day. We'll talk about life's adventures, like learning to drive in the Big C in a 4 speed non synchronous pickup truck, how being in business makes for awkward situations sometimes and about the time I made it to Amityville NY and looked up the famous haunted house
All this coming up Saturday morning on the Jerry Kautz country road show 8-10 AM on KEZL-FM 89.7 Tell your friends and neighbors- No commercials EVER! its MOM AND POP Radio for the Folks
