You’ve almost certainly heard the name Amanda Knox before.

Amanda came to attention in 2007 when she was accused of murder while studying abroad in Italy, but how much of the story do you think you know or remember?

On Monday, we’re sharing our conversation with Amanda about coercion, gaslighting, and finding yourself again after so much public trauma.

Brush up on Amanda’s story before listening and check out the documentary, “Amanda Knox,” to hear the full story.

Who’s been watching HBO’s “Breath of Fire”? 🙋🏻‍♀️

Last season, before the documentary series was released, we spoke with Charlotte Medlock - former Director of Marketing for the RAMA Institute - about her experience with the “cult within a cult” of Kundalini yoga and Guru Jagat (aka Katie Griggs). 👳🏻

If you’ve been watching the doc, our chat is a great companion and a deeper dive into the emotional abuse that took place at the hands of Katie.

Plus it will prepare you for our episode with Jules Hartley, a former Kundalini yoga teacher also featured in the docuseries, that’s dropping in just a few weeks!

Today, we continue our conversation with Andrea Dunlop about Munchausen by Proxy abuse and the ways parents and caretakers manipulate not only their young victims, but also the community around them.

We also talk more about the ways that Munchausen by Proxy has been brought into the mainstream through cases like that of Maya Kowalski and the Netflix film “Take Care of Maya.” Plus we dive into her forthcoming book, co-written with detective Mike Weber, “The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy,” which will hit shelves in February.

On Monday, we continue our conversation about Munchausen by Proxy with Andrea Dunlop and dive into her forthcoming book, “The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy.”

Having a background as a novelist, Andrea’s book tells a compelling non-fictional narrative about the difficulty of proving Munchausen by Proxy abuse and the tragedy inflicted on the young victims. We loved the book and can’t wait for all to read it when it comes out in February.

Because of the abusers’ nature to isolate the victim and the typical ages of the victims, Munchausen by Proxy abuse can be difficult to prove.

Some warning signs can include the victim’s symptoms improving when they are removed or protected from the abuser; this can then be followed by a worsening of symptoms if they are reunited. Or the caregiver themselves having unexplainable or unusual illnesses.

When describing a cult, the first thing that comes to mind is often a powerful leader at the helm of a large group of followers. That’s not the case with today’s guest.

Andrea Dunlop is an author and host of the podcast “Nobody Should Believe Me.” She is an expert on Munchausen by Proxy which is a form of mental illness and child abuse where a caregiver, typically a parent, induces or fabricates symptoms in their child to make them appear sicker than they actually are.

It’s, in Andrea’s words, a “cult of one.” Muchahusen by Proxy has found its way into the mainstream through the Maya Kowalski case and the story of Gypsy Rose, which was adapted into a documentary and Hulu limited series, “The Act.”

In today’s episode, Andrea explores Munchausen by Proxy abuse, its recent coverage in the news, including the Maya Kowalski court case, and how it could forever impact the medical system.

When your inner voice gets silenced for years, finding it again can feel like a battle.

In our conversation, Bethany Joy Lenz walked us through that turning point—when she realized just how much control she'd given up to the cult.

Listen to our full convo on A Little Bit Culty and grab a copy of her NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER, Dinner for Vampires, wherever books are sold! 🖤

On this week's episode, Bethany Joy Lenz opened up about her journey to LA as a young actor craving the one thing she'd never had growing up: a steady sense of community.

Moving from New York’s vibrant theater scene, she thought she’d found her “people” in a creative Bible study group—a space filled with entertainment pros and artists who shared her view of God as the ultimate storyteller.

But then things took a turn.

A new pastor came in, with his own ideas and… of course… dollar signs in his eyes.

What began as a close-knit support system morphed into something far more complex, a tangle of influence and control.

The community she’d hoped would fill a void quickly became, as she puts it, “emotionally incestuous” and suffocating.

Catch her full story on A Little Bit Culty—where we explore what happens when “family” comes with strings attached.

Bethany Joy Lenz became a household face during the meteoric rise of the teen CW soap “One Tree Hill.”

However, as she appeared in homes across the country every week, she was leading a double life with her participation in a culty Bible group for a decade.

Lenz found her voice to break free and had the inspiration to write a personal memoir on the experience, “Dinner for Vampires,” sharing for the first time publicly her experience in the group and her struggles to break free.

In this episode, Sarah and Nippy talk with Bethany about the surprising connections between her experience and NXIVM, the cult of fame, and their overlapping work in Hallmark movies.

Today’s show puts a different spin on our usual subject matter. We’re going to discuss something that has millions of followers and has become a world-wide obsession: true crime! Alright, it isn’t a cult (technically!), but it’s definitely infiltrated our minds and media.

Our guest today is Terry Dunn Meurer, the co-creator and executive producer of Unsolved Mysteries—the OG in crime-related television. Terry’s talks about the evolution of true crime in media, and the massive surge of interest it’s seen in recent years.

Fascination with true crime is extremely common and mostly harmless, but today we delve into its dark side. From armchair detectives interfering with police investigations, to the glorification of serial killers, this episode might make you wonder if maybe there is something culty here, after all…

We take a trip down memory lane with Terry, talking true crime and cold cases. Plus, Sarah pitches Terry on covering an unsolved NXIVM mystery.
