A master of deception, the fire-tufted barbet can be difficult to identify unless spotted, due to the fact that its call can be easily confused with the sound made by cicadas. Native to the tropical and montane forests of Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra, this species will forage high up in the canopy for figs, arthropods, and insects, and will roost inside tree cavities when it is in need of rest or shelter. Though it looks blue, the wing of this blue morpho butterfly is actually pigmented brown. No, it's not a magic trick - this color discrepancy happens because at most angles of light that we can see, all colors in the spectrum are absorbed except blue, which is reflected, making it appear that color. As if that isn’t trippy enough, this butterfly is actually a mosaic gynandromorph – an anomaly in which male and female cells are mixed together! Photos of this pinned specimen were taken at the Florida Museum of Natural History, McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity.

Commonly known as a zorilla, the Saharan striped polecat is a nocturnal and solitary mammal that is almost too cute for words. In the wild, zorillas are often found on rangelands where the grazing behavior of domestic livestock and wild herbivores keeps grass short. While this may not seem like ideal habitat for such a boldly striped critter, the short grass and abundance of fresh dung attracts beetles and mice - the perfect prey for the carnivorous polecat. This spoon-billed sandpiper at WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre is one of the remaining birds from a captive rearing project undertaken as part of wider work to save this critically endangered species.

With the population of spoon-billed sandpipers plummeting, mainly due to habitat loss, the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) took a leading role in efforts to buy time to reverse this trend. This included a conservation breeding project at WWT headquarters in Slimbridge where significant advances were made in incubation and rearing methods. These methods have since been used in many other species recovery projects.
The spoon-billed sandpiper is a ‘flagship’ species for the conservation of vital wetlands for migratory waterbirds along the East Asian-Australasian flyway – which stretches from the far north of Russia to the south of New Zealand. Protecting these charismatic wading birds, known affectionately as the spoonie, will help save millions of other birds and the wetlands they inhabit.

Gerenuks like this one at Sheikh Butti bin Juma Al Maktoum Wildlife Centre are expert foragers. By rearing up on spindly legs and craning its long neck, this species can reach tasty tree leaves that are out of range for most antelopes, reducing the amount of competition for food they might otherwise face.
