First Week in the land of Aloha:

My first week in Hawai'i was a bag of mixed emotions. From excitement to despair, unsatisfied to then being grateful. It was indeed a roller coaster ride, kind of like the one which you step out of feeling glad that you tried it nonetheless.

As soon as Team Honolulu arrived in Oahu around 10.30 p.m., on 18th September, there were some setbacks in terms of our accommodation - we were not supposed to check - in only until next month!

Thankfully we managed to contact ACYPL that very minute (note the time difference between Hawaii and DC) and the issue was rightfully resolved.

I was based at the Abraham Lincoln Hall of East West Center in University of Hawai'i - a think tank organisation that promotes better relations among the people of the United States, Asia and the Pacific through cooperative study, research and dialogue.

Though I was attached to the office of Senator Stanley Chang, East West Center was my accommodation host. I found myself exploring the city ; going to places and familiarising myself with the landmarks and locations around me.

My internship with Senator Chang was remote for the first two weeks thus giving me ample time to self explore and finding out where's the best place to buy spices and vegetables as I cooked more often than I ate out.

I was what I would called in the early stages of a cocoon of a butterfly - feeling uncomfortable and edgy at the start, but hopeful for a beautiful outcome.

Mahalo! 🤙

Day 4 of Washington D.C.

We visited the Capitol building on Capitol Hill in Washington on our last day in D.C. This building that houses the federal legislature known as Congress is filled with so much history and significance from the iron cast structure it was built using with to withstand fire to the sculptures, drawing and inscriptions it was adorned with signifying the fight for liberty, freedom and justice.

What was also significant about this trip was the fact that it was on 16th September - Malaysia Day! Though being 15,210 km away from home, we managed to bring out our Jalur Gemilang and waved it before the Capitol.

While taking pictures with the flag, our South EastAsian Fellows also joined in thus making it a regional celebration. This moment strongly resonated the pride and joy of being Malaysian and Asian within me.

Day 3 in Washington D.C.

After much walking around the city the day before, the meetings held on Day 3 required us to travel by bus as we were moving in and out of town.

The first place we stopped by was at the US - ASEAN Business Council where we met their representatives. The council is an advocacy organisation for US corporations operating within ASEAN and is led by its president - Former Ambassador to Vietnam, Mr.Ted Osius.

I took this opportunity to ask him if Malaysia's unstable political climate influences US corporations in being hesitant in investing in our country ; he replied that it is indeed a key factor in their decision making process but commented that Malaysia is number 1 in supply chain resiliency. He later mentioned of his experience discussing trade and economics with our Finance and MiTi minister not long ago here at the office.

We then continued to our second meeting in Virginia where we met with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems which is a global non - partisan, non - profit that provides technical assistance and research to electoral bodies in order to advance democracy.

The third meeting was with Ms.Kylie Atwood - reporter for CNN - a significant personality within the journalism sphere where we discussed on US political landscape and US national security issues.

The last and final meeting was with Ms.Libby Rosenbaum - CEO for ACYPL where she welcomed all of us onboard the programme and wished us the very best.

Arrival to Washington - Day 1 in D.C.

After 62 hours of gruelling and butt-hurting travel, we finally arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia. We were greeted by Rob Smalley, Programme Officer from ACYPL (American Council of Young Political Leaders) who brought us to our hotel in D.C.

D.C. is the capital of the US and the airport was in the state of Virginia - the distance of which is about 40 mins. It reminded me of the location and distance between KL and KLIA.

Once we reached our hotel at Marriot Inn Residence, Rob debried us about our activities, events and tours for the next four days and handed us our room keys.

After heading to our room, we joined our other fellows who reached a day earlier to have dinner at a halal Chinese restaurant down the block called 'New Dynasty'. The servings for one person could easily feed two people. Also the Asian in me just felt so weird paying so much in dollars for something I can get for less than RM 10 in Malaysia.

After dinner, some of us walked around the neighbourhood under the chilly weather just to familiarise ourselves with the city.

As we reached back our hotel, we hit the sack as our jet-lagged asses couldn't handle the tiredness no more.

En route to Washington Day 3:

After having spent the night at Holiday Villa Doha, the YSEALI team woke up early the next morning to head to the airport for our flight to Washington D.C. I must say that Doha International Airport was all together something else. It's truly the culmination of of urban design and technological advancement. I was very amazed at how the aero train that ferried passengers to 90 over departure gates were built inside the airport itself. The designs and interior of the airport was something straight of a scene from a futuristic film. I guess that's why it has consecutively won "World's Best Airport". After checking in, we head down to have breakfast at the foodcourt and then proceeded to the departure gate. This was our last leg of travel before reaching Washington D.C. While the fellows who got stranded in Bangkok are only now making their way to the U.S, the other fellows particularly the ones from Phillipines, Cambodia, Vietnam and Timor-Leste were already making their study tour around Washington D.C. as their flights arrived on time. We had 14 more hours to go!

Overall, the experience in Doha was short but worthwhile. Will definitely return back to explore the city more.

Fun fact : FIFA World Cup 20w2 Will be held in Doha.

The first week in D.C. has been quite busy and tiring, hence the slow update.

En route to Washington Day 1:

Few weeks prior to departing to the U.S I had already mentally prepared on the long hours of travel especially the time I'll be spending in transit at two different airports for my layover. But little did I know I was in for a surprise as I departed KLIA to Thailand's Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok for my
connecting flight to Doha International Airport was delayed by 5 hours. This was on top of the already existing 10 hour layover I already had in Bangkok.

My friends and I from the Malaysian cohort (who consisted of members from different institute theme) found a coffee shop nearby to sit down to do our work while waiting for our flight.

As we learnt that our flight got delayed, we got in touch with other SouthEast Asian fellows who were also stranded in Bangkok for their connecting flight to Doha. We grouped together and marched down the transfer desk and argued with the airport staff on the delay of the flight. Though only having met the other SouthEast Asia fellows virtually, we seem to have bonded very quickly in the face of adversity demanding them to put us on the next flight out of Bangkok to Doha ; we were relentless, we were adamant.

But tis' no avail as there was only one flight per day to Doha and we (together with 300 other passengers) patiently waited for the next 6 hours to board the airbus while sleeping on the seats at the departure gate.

After having spent more than 15 hours in Bangkok airport itself, one thing was for sure, we were to miss our connecting flight from Doha to Washington. This will in effect delay our arrival to D.C. by one day as per our schedule. The story some what gets interesting from here.

Of the many things that I've been through in life, as a student, an academic, a professional and even just as a person, I consider this the most biggest highlight in my life till date and thank God for that.

After holding it in for the last 6 months, I'd like to finally announce that I've been selected as a Malaysian representative for the Young South East Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Professional Fellows Programme that will be held in the United States of America for six long weeks.

YSEALI is a cultural exchange programme organized and funded fully by the U.S Department of State to allow young emerging leaders to collaborate and share ideas, approaches and strategies to develop solutions to pressing local and global challenges.

There are two levels within the YSEALI programme; academic and professionals and each with it's own set of themes. I applied for both academic and professional and was called for an interview for both programmes. However I could only be selected for one.

Thankfully, I was selected under the Professional Fellows programme under the theme that I applied for, which is Governance and Society.

I'm so thrilled and excited to be representing Malaysia again for the second time (the first being at Film Leaders Incubator in 2018 by the Busan Asian Film School) and do my little part in bringing pride to the .

I'll be in Washington D.C. for the first and last week for the orientation and closing ceremony and in between for four weeks I'll be in the land of surfboards and tropical trees of Hawaii.

Super stoked, can't wait!

I've been busy with work for the longest time and my filming took a backseat. In order to balance my sanity, I realized it's time to get back to it. Breaking from a very a long hiatus with some projects planned. Glad to announce that NatMar Productions is finally back!

A strong and independent judiciary is one of the most strongest safeguards against tyranny and abuse of power.

Judges being agents of the judiciary are tasked to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice be done.

To quote what Lord Chief Justice Hewart said that justice must not only be done but must seen to be done and hence it is incumbent upon the judge to act impartially and without bias.

It was my first time at the Palace of Justice yesterday on a trip organized by my students from the and I must say it was an enriching experience for me, particularly because I teach Constitutional law, to be present in the courtrooms where landmarks decisions such as Indhira Gandhi and Alma N**o Atenza was decided which now has become a part of Malaysian jurisprudence.

Having understood and learnt about the judicial crisis in 1988 and witnessing in real time today how our judiciary is rising above the set back it faced gives me a sense of hope towards the administration of justice in our country.

I must also add here that while we were inside the Court of Appeal, I took the opportunity to conduct a mini lecture for my students on the creation of the Court of Appeal and the reason behind the re-organisation of our court structure. Truly an experience not to be forgotten.

With newly passed Bill's like Anti - Sexual Harassment and Anti - Party Hopping at the Dewan Rakyat, it reassures me that change for the better would come, though it may be late, but it'll sure come.

Conquered greater heights; quite literally in fact : Bukit Batu Kumbang at 675 m and Bukit Batu Chenuang at 850 m.

My first time on a trans-hike and thanks to for the invite - whom I'm also very proud of as a friend as she's about to conquer Mount KK end of this month.

The elevation was quite challenging at some parts as it was continuously steep and it was rather difficult during descent considering my wrong choice of footwear.

What's even more challenging was the fact that we hiked up Bukit Batu Kumbang from Kemensah and then got down to hike up Bukit Chenuang to have lunch and then descend to hike up Batu Kumbang again to head back home; stopped by Lata Senrose to wash our legs.

Trail was approximately 19 km in distance and the duration was 11 hours in total as we started at 7 a.m. and reached back only at 6 p.m. Endured bruises and cuts but worth the hike!
