Mahama Betrays NDC in Volta and Greater Accra by taking Speakership to the North.

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has mandated the nomination of Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic. This move, widely perceived as sidelining the party’s loyal strongholds, has left many questioning the inclusiveness of the president-elect’s approach to governance.
This move has once again highlighted the increasing concentration of top appointments in the northern regions, leaving key constituencies like the Volta Region and Greater Accra feeling sidelined despite their consistent loyalty to the NDC.

The NDC’s Volta Region, often referred to as the party’s “world bank,” and Greater Accra, which has increasingly solidified its role as a critical battleground, have both played decisive roles in securing the party’s victories. Yet, critics argue that the president-elect appears to have overlooked these regions when making appointments to strategic positions, opting instead to allocate these roles to the northern parts of the country.

With Alban Bagbin poised to retain his Speakership, questions are being raised about the broader pattern of appointments in Mahama’s administration. Political observers point out that this decision follows a trend of prioritizing northern representation in key roles, a move that risks alienating other critical regions within the party.

Party insiders and concerned supporters in Volta and Greater Accra argue that while northern Ghana deserves representation, it should not come at the expense of regions that have historically delivered unwavering support to the NDC. The Volta Region, in particular, has consistently provided the party with one of its strongest vote margins, while the Ga-Adangbe communities in Greater Accra have been instrumental in securing vital parliamentary seats.

“There is no doubt that Rt. Hon. Bagbin is experienced and capable, but we cannot ignore the optics of this decision,” one party member from Greater Accra remarked. “When the same region repeatedly benefits from such high-profile appointments, it sends the wrong message to other regions that have also sacrificed and contributed significantly to the party’s success.”

Supporters in Volta and Greater Accra are now watching closely to see if Mahama’s broader slate of appointments will offer more inclusive representation. Failure to address these concerns may fuel dissatisfaction in regions that have long been the backbone of the NDC’s electoral dominance.

As Mahama begins his presidency, the challenge will be to balance regional representation in a manner that reflects the contributions and expectations of all NDC strongholds while maintaining unity within the party. The Volta Region and Greater Accra, in particular, will be waiting to see if they are finally rewarded with appointments befitting their loyalty and strategic importance to the party.
