Drama in Machakos: MCAs Push for Assembly Reopening After TikTok Hustle Fails
Today marks three weeks since the Machakos County Assembly was indefinitely shut down by the Speaker. Following a spending spree in Malindi, 20 MCAs are now expected to hold a presser from Cottage Hotel and Lodgings, seeking the Speaker's mercy to reopen the assembly — mainly to resume earning their sitting allowances. However, the press conference reportedly hinges on receiving some "tokens" before proceeding.
Meanwhile, a group of 16 MCAs had attempted to monetize their downtime by launching a TikTok account, ‘sanzunews’, along with individual profiles aimed at showcasing stalled county projects from 2013–2022. The goal was to gain enough traction to start earning through TikTok's creator fund. Unfortunately, after two weeks and failing to meet the 10,000 followers and 100,000 views benchmark, the effort was quietly shelved yesterday.
Now, with TikTok ambitions dashed and pockets reportedly dry, the pressure is mounting on the Speaker to reopen the assembly and restore the MCAs’ access to their allowances.
