Emily Steffenhagen is currently studying creative writing at Longwood University. She loves fantasy and sci-fi. She’s excited to be a part of A Common Place’s creation and to help grow the literary community at Longwood.

The Sewanee Review is an American literary magazine established in 1892, making it the oldest quarterly in the U.S! It publishes original fiction and poetry, essays, reviews, and literary criticism.

Meet A Common Place’s Prose Editor: Victoria Thompson!
Victoria Thompson oversees the Fiction and Nonfiction sections for A Common Place. She is a senior English major with a Creative Writing concentration and Communication Studies minor at Longwood University. As a writer who has submitted her work to publications before, she understands the mixed emotions of fear and excitement of giving writing for others to see. She remains hopeful for herself and her fellow writers in the literary community to learn and grow on their path to publication.
If you’re interested in interviews with authors, promotions of new books, or any other literary event, Powell’s Books is the place to go—not literally, since they’re located in Portland, Oregon, but lucky for us, the Powell’s website has a fantastic calendar of events for readers’ perusal.
The variety of events means there’s something for everyone. Some of them require a ticket or book purchase, but most are free. At the moment, events are held on Zoom, so you can attend from anywhere! Click the link in our bio for more information on literary events!

This week’s spotlight shines brightly on Instagram writer and influencer Caro Claire Burke. Caro is the founder of what she has coined the Cover Stories Project. Within this project, Caro writes stories that are based on songs. Many know her for her stories based on the discography of Taylor Swift. Meet A Common Place’s Poetry Editor: Kyla Brown!
Kyla is an undergraduate student attending Longwood University, majoring in Modern Language with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language and an Algebra I Endorsement. She has a burning passion for poetry that began at the young age of 10 and has only grown since. Her favorite collection of poetry is American Negro Poetry, edited by Arna Bontemps, which highlights some of his favorite poets, notably Langston Hughes. In her free time, she writes to her neighbors about proverbs found in the bible. Kyla also enjoys spending time with her friends and family.
Staff at the Greenwood Library at Longwood University host an ongoing reading series known as Southside Reads. Currently the monthly discussions are held online because of the pandemic.
The November theme is Read in One Day, which refers to any sort of writing that can be read in a single day, involving shorter books like novellas and short stories. The date for the book discussion this month has yet to be determined but will most likely be online. Meet A Common Place’s Poetry Reader: Mallory Davis!
Mallory Davis is a Sociology major with a concentration in Family Studies and a minor in Spanish. She loves to write poetry and short stories. Poetry and fiction, especially fantasy and realistic fiction, intrigues her the most.

Take out the time to enjoy the reading of Laura Kolbe, someone who understands. As highlighted on our website by Kyla Brown, A Common Place’s Poetry Editor, Kolbe will be reading from her debut book TONIGHT (7-8pm) at New Dominion Bookshop in Charlottesville, Va.
You could go with some friends and even grab some dinner afterwards. Keep in mind it’s free 😏

Meet A Common Place’s Editor-in-Chief: Cuba Carden!
Cuba knows firsthand the overwhelm and nervousness associated with submitting work to a literary journal or audience. She has submitted to many journals and serves as an editor at the literary journal K’in. Recently, she performed original poetry as an Invited Reader at the More Than Concrete: Literature as Monument Symposium Series. Cuba worked for Virginia Magazine publishing company and studied English with a Creative Writing concentration. She enjoys reading pieces that break the traditional mold and strives to do so herself. Cuba is mostly excited to be a part of Longwood’s growing literary community and welcomes all writers!
