DIY Discovery | Seven Artists You Have To Hear Right Now - Tinnitist

Brand new Gwyn Ashton Sonic Blues Preachers review.

'The gritty Australian singer-guitarist has also released a slate of solo albums, including his most recent effort Sonic Blues Preachers. Stripped down, solidly muscular and threateningly pointed as a switchblade, Ashton’s searing slide-guitar work and menacing baritone vocals will transport you to a juke-joint where Iggy Pop and Mark Lanegan are throwing down with Ry Cooder and Cedric Burnside. Which is another way of saying he’s in a class by himself. Remember his name'.

Most of the music I hear is sent to me by labels and publicists. But there’s nothing like getting it straight from the source. Welcome to the latest instalment of DIY Discovery, where I introduce you to artists who have sent me their music directly (and who don’t suck — that’s definitely par...

Gwyn Ashton - Solo Elektro - Fab Tone Records teaser video

A couple of years ago I went into an ex-communist hotel room in Central Europe, threw some mattresses against the walls and recorded an album with just a guitar, octave divider and kick drum. The whole album is live on four tracks - vocals, kick, guitar and octave pedal. There are no overdubs or punch ins. It’s 100% LIVE playing and singing. There some effects on the vocals - ADT and delay/reverb in post production but that’s all.

I got three ‘Tracks of The Week’ in Classic Rock Magazine and I’m touring the world right now promoting it, plus my latest album and an array of acoustic world-music-meets-blues-roots stuff. It’s an experimental progressive stoner blues-rock psychedelic fuzz guitar album. Here’s the teaser video. Hope you dig it.

A song-by-song preview of Gwyn Ashton's latest album 'Solo Elektro' with excerpts of promotional footage shot by Neville Farmer and Rob Englander. 'Pure Geni...

When You're Alone

Back in 2016 I released a download-only EP 'Fistful of Blues'. These are four tracks that didn't fit on the Radiogram album, which had more of a 70s rock bias.

“When You’re Alone”; that builds on Peter Green’s “Looking For Somebody” and follows its DNA back to Chess and forward to Gary Moore – without ever copying any of them but paying respect to all of Ashton’s heroes in his own style" - Let It Rock

Recording process: I tracked this myself. I didn't want a slick, modern polished sound. I wanted it to sound like a record from the 60s. A bit dirty.

As an experiment I set the drums up facing the wall and used ONE mic on the whole kit. I got the drummer to play while I walked around the kit and put the microphone where my left ear was, where I could hear the whole kit really well.

Then we recorded it as a duo, just drums, vocals and guitar. I engineered it myself. I then put the bass track down. That way of doing things is stupidly difficult. I would normally record drums, bass and guitar at the same time so you play off each other. As we didn't even HAVE a bass player I just played and imagined the bass track in my head while we got the track down. A lot of people couldn't do that but I'd been playing the guitar/drums duo thing for a few years by then so it was a bit easier.
On this track I played a '63 Strat into a '57 tweed Deluxe and a '56 tweed Twin, with a Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal V1 into an EP4 Echoplex.

This was the same session as the Radiogram album and the same recording process. I think we did a GREAT job on it.

If you like it, it's on iTunes and most download sites. Please go buy it and support independant musicians.

Sonic Blues Preachers is a red-hot slab of funky, dirty, bluesy rock n roll laced with some Mississippi Delta-inspired 12-string acoustic slide material. Gwyn Ashton’s ninth studio album project features collaboration with one of Australia’s most musical drummers, the formidable John Freeman from the pre AC/DC Bon Scott-fronted band Fraternity.

These two musicians are on top of their game as they go head-to-head into battle, the interplay between them second-to-none resulting in a cutting-edge album full of rockin’ melodic songs with a strong pop sensibility, co-penned with Ashton’s writing partner Garry Allen.
The songs are full of hooks, big guitar riffs, killer bottleneck slide and fat dirty grooves, some cheeky, sinister and dark but all highly hypnotic and fresh. This collection of contagious retro-meets-modern should satisfy the most ardent blues and rock aficionado.

Recorded in Adelaide, Sonic Blues Preachers was then mixed by Gavin Monaghan at Magic Garden Studio, England through a vintage analogue recording console (the very one used on Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust album). The session was interrupted by Robert Plant taking Monaghan into Abbey Road for a few days of tracking on one of Plant’s projects. Once again, Ashton’s mastering engineer former Sony Records Los Angeles David Mitson, an essential part of the team, brought it all together. Amongst many other classic albums over a span of 30 years Mitson also re-mastered Sgt Pepper, Electric Ladyland and the Sony Blues catalogue, including the Robert Johnson box set.

Ashton’s back catalogue features musicians from Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Phil Lynott’s Grand Slam, as well as Robert Plant’s and Rory Gallagher’s bands.

Sonic Blues Preachers is the follow-up to his 2017 highly acclaimed release Solo Elektro.

Official Fab Tone Records lyric video from Gwyn Ashton's 2019 power-duo album - Sonic Blues Preachers.

Sonic Blues Preachers was born from a songwriting session between Ashton and Garry Allen, in Melbourne, Australia. The pair have written many great songs together, starting with Ashton's 2017 Solo Elektro album.

Ashton's latest release takes the listener on a magical slide guitar journey of hard rockin', heavy funkin' greasy grooves, combined with some darker low-tuned acoustic 12-string tracks, conjuring up images of a bygone Mississippi delta, but still maintains his identifiable Australian sound.

From the album's rowdy 1, 2, 3, 4 count-in yelled into the distorted microphonic pickups of a vintage 1960s Teisco electric guitar to the closing mesmerising swampy tremolo bottleneck slide-fueled Cooder-esque number 'Waiting Game', Sonic Blues Preachers is a mighty powerful slab of contemporary Australian blues.

Ashton is joined by John Freeman, former drummer with Fraternity, an early 70s band from Adelaide, South Australia, that featured Bon Scott on lead vocals, pre AC/DC. Cold Chisel frontman Jimmy Barnes replaced Scott in Fraternity for a year in 1973 before going back to his own band.

Lyric video by Franky Van Daele.

Theres a stigma attached to being a solo artist. A lot of booking agents wanting ‘a full band’ before even listening to what artists such as Gwyn Ashton can deliver on their own.

In this modern world where it’s difficult to keep a group of people on the road not only due to rising travelling costs and hotels but also auditioning and rehearsing in new members who share the same focus and direction in music, some turn to a solo career. ‘You can’t just fly in the night before, quickly run through the set with guys you’ve never even met before and go on the road the next day. The public deserve WAY more than that’ Ashton states.

Not happy with flying to different countries using pickup bands of unrehearsed session musicians who either haven’t had time to learn his material or plainly don’t understand his musical direction Ashton decided that the people who pay to go to the shows deserve more for their money than a band blagging their way through a set of songs that they don’t know.

‘Being in a band means being in a gang. I spend MONTHS finding the right combination of people who get along not only musically but part of a band ‘family’. You sweat blood believing in the music and I would pick members who have passion for it, who’s focus is on knowing the songs and delivering a show onstage, not reading notes on a music stand’.

After several quite dysfunctional European tours with session musicians Ashton decided to maintain his integrity and give the public a ‘proper show’ and spent a long time re-writing his songs, writing and recording a new album, Solo Elektro, in real time, no overdubbing instruments or vocals - 100% live in the studio, because he wanted to make a totally honest album of the same show that he performs live onstage. Plus it’s cool having a quirky edge to your act.

Ashton has developed a hybrid guitar/bass technique where he uses an octave divider to split his guitar signal and allow the bass sound to be separate from the guitar, plus he uses a 22” kick drum that appeared on the first Black Sabbath album, so you know it’s gonna rock! This isn’t your average solo guy with an acoustic guitar, although he can do that too and he does, on vintage National resonator and Weissenborn lap guitars.

This video displays the constant struggle of a man defying all odds, always having to prove his validity as a solo artist by trekking his way alone across the globe armed with nothing but a bunch of guitars (and not afraid to use them), a wealth of original songs and a passion for rockin' out.

Gwyn Ashton proves one man CAN get the crowd going and make a big noise at the same time!
