Central Mindanao Colleges (CMC) acknowledges the critical role of press freedom in advancing democracy, human rights, and social justice. As a staunch advocate for ethical standards and media training programs that defend press freedom, CMC is committed to promoting critical thinking and academic freedom.
Recently, CMC participated in the "Telling the BARMM Story: Media Training and Fellowship for Filipino Communicators" project, a collaboration between the Probe Media Foundation, Inc., The Asia Foundation, and the UK Government. The initiative aimed to foster culturally sensitive and intersectional gender narratives about the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and empower media professionals to tell informed and impactful stories through multimedia and multiplatform storytelling. CMC's Marketing and Communications Office, along with selected campus media organizations, participated in the training to enhance their storytelling skills and contribute to positive social change.
The Institutional Communications Management and Creative (ICMC) team from CMC attended a portraiture workshop led by renowned photographer Lito Sy and a photowalk guided by photographer Rhonson Ng at a Fuji event held at Seda Hotel Davao. The event provided an opportunity for the team to develop their skills in photography and expand their creative vision.
CMC also took part in the virtual symposium titled "Journalism Under Surveillance | World Press Freedom Day 2022," organized by the Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines Inc. (JSAP) and the Philippine Press Institute (PPI). The symposium aimed to assess press freedom worldwide, support the press against attacks on its independence, and pay tribute to journalists who have died in the line of duty, in line with the World Press Freedom Day theme of "Journalism under Surveillance."
Through its various media organizations, ICMC, CMC Lions' Quill, and CTE Exponent, CMC actively supports and participates in media training programs that promote ethical standards and defend press freedom.
With these initiatives, CMC aims to build the capacity of Filipino journalists and storytellers to tell critical yet frequently ignored stories and contribute to positive social change.
As an institution that upholds democratic values, human rights, and social justice, CMC acknowledges the challenges faced by journalists and media practitioners in the Philippines.
The media has played a critical role in exposing corruption, human rights violations, and other abuses of power, but journalists in the country face numerous challenges, including threats, harassment, and violence. CMC stands in solidarity with its media industry colleagues who confront threats to their lives, freedom, and dignity.
As we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, CMC urges the Philippine government to safeguard and protect the right to free speech and the press, as enshrined in the Constitution and international human rights instruments.
CMC also encourages its students to participate in various events and activities that celebrate press freedom and other human rights. Let us come together to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom and its essential role in fostering a just and democratic society.
