Egyptian customs officials thwart smuggling attempts
Customs officials at Cairo International Airport recently thwarted attempts by passengers to smuggle a range of banned items into Egypt.

A sword, e-cigarette capsules containing drugs, wireless devices, tools used in casinos, antique coins, and a set of binoculars were among the items uncovered.

The sword was found inside a wooden case in the baggage of an EgyptAir passenger arriving in Cairo from Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania.

The luxury Cairo villa of Egyptian soccer star Mohamed Salah was burgled over the weekend.
Two police officials told the Associated Press on Monday the burglars stole only cable TV receivers from the winger’s villa in the upmarket Tagamoa area, some 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Cairo city center.
A cooking gas cylinder in the Liverpool player’s garden proved too heavy for the burglars to steal, the officials said. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak with the media.
Authorities were first called to the house after a close family member noticed on Saturday evening that one of the windows was open, the officials said.

Egypt Brings Daylight Saving Time Back.
Egypt’s government announced on Wednesday the return of daylight saving time.

Starting from the last Friday of April and lasting until the last Thursday of October each year, the clock in Egypt will advance by one hour.

The change means that people in Egypt will experience an extra hour of daylight between the end of April and October. Egypt’s time is currently GMT+2. During the daylight saving time period, Egypt’s time will be adjusted to GMT+3.

The move was announced by the Egyptian cabinet following its approval of a draft law that proposed the return of daylight saving time to Egypt. In a statement, the Egyptian cabinet said that the decision was made as part of Egypt’s efforts to save energy consumption and in light of the country’s economic conditions.

Hidden corridor in Egypt’s Great Pyramid mapped with cosmic rays
A 9-metre-long corridor in the 4500-year-old Great Pyramid of Giza that was discovered in 2016 has now been mapped, and researchers have used a tiny camera to peer inside.
A previously hidden corridor buried deep in the 4500-year-old Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt has been mapped in detail for the first time – and researchers have also taken a glimpse inside using an endoscopic camera.

The corridor was first discovered in 2016, but researchers didn’t want to damage the monument to gain access. The pyramid is the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world still standing, and was, for millennia, the world’s tallest human-made structure at 146 metres. It was built around 2560 BC during the reign of the pharaoh Khufu.

Using a technique called cosmic-ray muon radiography developed by academics at Nagoya University, Japan, an international team of researchers was able to confirm that the corridor was 9 metres long, with a cross section of about 2 metres by 2 metres.

Premarital examination in Egypt: A positive step forward
CAIRO: A new health initiative has begun in Egypt to conduct medical examinations for those who are about to get married, to help reduce the risk of having unhealthy children.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population confirmed in a statement that the examination takes about an hour, and includes registering personal data, along with issuing advice.

“The examinations include 10 tests, including AIDS, virus C, and virus B, and they also include tests of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, hemoglobin level in the blood, blood type, and a compatibility analysis, and the analysis of Mediterranean anemia (thalassemia),” the ministry said.

Questions regarding the initiative flooded social media, with many fearing the marriage being prevented if the test results were positive.

First time in decade, Egypt FM to visit Turkey, Syria for ‘solidarity’

The trip aims to show ‘solidarity with the two countries and their brotherly peoples’ after the devastating earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey earlier this month.

Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will head to Turkey and Syria Monday morning, his office said, for the first such visit in a decade of tense relations with both countries.

The trip aims to show "solidarity with the two countries and their brotherly peoples" after the devastating earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey earlier this month, a foreign ministry statement said.

Earthquake experts say 4.1-magnitude tremor in Egypt is normal.

The region is on heightened alert since the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6
An aerial view of the Gulf of Suez and the Suez Canal.

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake that struck north-east Egypt in the early hours of Friday was unremarkable and not related to the aftershocks still rocking Turkey and Syria in the wake of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake this month, experts told The National.

“The Gulf of Suez is active seismically, but far less than the Gulf of Aqaba. This magnitude-4 earthquake is nothing special. In fact, magnitude-4 earthquakes can happen almost anywhere, anytime,” Martin Mai, professor of geophysics at King Abdullah University in Saudi Arabia, told The National.

Why are Turkey's earthquake aftershocks so bad and when will they end?
The National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research in Egypt said that the earthquake occurred at 12.25am local time, 27km north of the city of Suez, at a depth of 10km. It was felt by citizens in several regions of the country but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The region has been on heightened alert since the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6 that has killed more than 46,000 people and left millions homeless.

Since then, several more earthquakes and aftershocks have been felt across the region, more recently last Monday when a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Turkey-Syria border region that was also felt in Syria, Egypt, Israel and Lebanon.

“I would not give attention to this event, aside from that it is a small earthquake, because it has happened often in the past in the Gulf of Suez,” Prof Mai added.

Other experts said there had been seismic activity in the wider Middle East region before and after February 6 and that it was not surprising.

“I’ve been looking up the seismicity since the main shock in the Lebanon area and I saw that there was an earthquake on February 8, an earthquake on February 7, and an earthquake on February 22. I also saw that there was an earthquake on January 21. So you can see there’s been some seismicity before the sequence and some seismicity afterwards,” earthquake scientist Judith Hubbard told the Lebanese LBCI television channel.

“There might have been a slight increase in the size of seismicity but I’m not sure you’d be able to tell very much whether these are related to the current events or not. But Lebanon is at risk of moderate-size earthquakes and there’s been a little bit of change in the area, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a slight increase in the level of activity, but we should see it tail off over time,” she added.

After the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the United States Geological Survey outlined three scenarios in regard to aftershocks, with the most likely scenario being a 90 per cent chance that earthquakes will decrease in frequency, with none being larger than magnitude 7 in the weeks to come.

“In this scenario, moderate aftershocks between M5 and M6 are still likely. These moderate quakes can cause damage, particularly to weakened or older buildings not built to withstand earthquakes. The other two scenarios are less likely, yet more extreme,” the USGS said.
