BUSINESS 🚨: Euro crashes to parity with dollar for the first time in two decades: Rapid US rate hikes sink the eurozone's spending power as it sits tight

The euro effectively reached parity with the dollar yesterday as latest recession and inflation fears saw it wilt in the face of the rampaging greenback.

The single currency dipped as low as $1.00005, meaning it was just a fraction of a cent from hitting the same level as the US currency for the first time in two decades.

It has fallen 12 per cent against the dollar so far this year as the US Federal Reserve aggressively hikes interest rates while the European Central Bank (ECB) has been more reticent even as inflation hits record levels.

Europe is facing a major economic slowdown that could worsen if Russia chokes off its gas supplies.

BUSINESS 🚨: Twitter sues Elon Musk to complete takeover agreement

The two parties could reach a settlement or agree a new deal at a lower price than the original $54.20 bid, although it seems Twitter may attempt to push Musk to honour his word.

Twitter has sued Elon Musk in an attempt to force the billionaire to complete the deal he pressed the company to agree to back in April.

The social media firm filed the lawsuit overnight, along with an application to expedite the trail date to September, arguing Musk had treated the deal as a joke. (Via investment week)

NIGERIA 🚨 Strike: ASUU replies Buhari on ‘enough is enough’ comment

Buhari had, in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, saying, “truly, enough is enough for keeping students at home.’’

He spoke while receiving governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), legislators and political leaders at his residence in Daura, Katsina State, on Monday.

Reacting to the development, Osedeke said: “I do not understand why Mr President said that ‘enough is enough’, when we are not the one delaying the students at home.

“The federal government had sent its team to negotiate with us and we have finished. Instead of coming back to us to tell us the outcome of the meeting, we are hearing this.

“If you set up a committee to negotiate on your behalf, and the committee has finished and they have brought the information to you to sign and then you said enough is a enough, what does this mean.’’

NIGERIA 🚨: The National Examinations Council (NECO) on Monday said it has not scheduled any examination for Saturday July 9, 2022 in the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) for school-based candidates.

According to NECO, its position was contrary to insinuations that it had scheduled examination for July 9, 2022, which is Sallah Day (Eid- Adha).

The Council was reacting to an earlier appeal by a Muslim organisation, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), which had on Sunday in a statement urged NECO to reconsider its position.

The head of a confederation of trade unions in Germany sounded the alarm that the looming cut-off of Russian natural gas would cripple major industries in the European country.

“Because of the gas bottlenecks, entire industries are in danger of permanently collapsing: aluminum, glass, the chemical industry,” Yasmin Fahimi, who heads the German Federation Trade Unions (DGB) said Sunday in an interview with local Bild am Sonntag daily.

Her dire warning came just a day ahead of an anticipated round of crisis talks between Fahimi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

WORLD 🚨: Arab students refuse to stand for Israeli anthem 'Hatikva' during graduation ceremony at Haifa University.

The university held the ceremony on campus Sunday for undergraduate students.

At the end of the graduation ceremony, Israel’s national anthem, “Hatikva” was played and participants asked to rise.

A number of Arab students remained seated, however, and refused to join in singing the anthem.

“The situation was upsetting and inappropriate,” one graduating student told Israel National News. “They are Israeli citizens. Even if they don’t identify with its ideals, they should at least stand to honor the singing of the national anthem of the state they are a part of.”

MK Bezalel Smotrich (Religious Zionist Party) responded on Twitter to footage of the incident, saying: “This isn’t a matter of semantics, and it isn’t a minor [phenomenon].”

“This is critical for our future. The audacity, the impudence, and the gall of many Israeli Arabs has reached new heights and is turning into an existential threat [to Israel] and security threat to all of us.”
