Katie Fiorelli is the Outreach and Training Manager for Cincinnati Cares. For more than a decade in roles as diverse as deacon of her church to a University of Cincinnati graduate student to a tutor in the Chicago public schools to a secondary-school teacher in Washington, D.C., Katie has been passionate about learning and creating a better world, which makes her a perfect fit for Cincinnati Cares and its mission of creating a Greater Cincinnati.

Join us on The Discussion this Friday, 1/29/2021 at 6 p.m. as we learn more about the Cincinnati Black United Front & The historic Collaborative Agreement which has changed the way policing is done in Cincinnati.

Our special guest is Iris Roley

Iris is an original member of the Cincinnati Black United Front. As the Project Manager for the CBUF, in November 2000, Iris implemented a plan of action to address the wrongful deaths of two unarmed black men by the Cincinnati Police Department.

This was the catalyst used to file a class action lawsuit against the city of Cincinnati, its police department, and fraternal order of police in federal court. The lawsuit and eventual settlement in March 2001 is known as the historic Collaborative Agreement and the Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Cincinnati and the Department of Justice. It is the only settlement in the country that includes Community members to be a part of how Public safety is designed and implemented with a focus on Problem Solving for communities and police.

Eddie Koen is the President & CEO of the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio (ULGSO). Koen, a Chicago native, was most recently chief impact officer for United Way of Denver but has held both for-profit and nonprofit roles including managing partner for Washington, D.C.-based private equity firm SeedIM Ventures and chief of staff for Denver Public Schools. Koen is a past member of the board of governors of the National Bar Association and board of directors for Urban League of Metro Denver as well as former vice chair of the Denver Foundation in addition to other nonprofit board roles. He holds a master’s in public administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a bachelor’s from the University of Alabama and a J.D. from Samford University, Cumberland School of Law.

Rickell Howard-Smith is the Executive Director for the Center for Social Justice at ULGSO. Smith received her law degree from Temple University and her B.A. from Howard University, magna cm laude. She comes to the Center for Social Justice with 15 years of experience advocating for social and criminal justice reform. As an attorney, she has held positions with Legal Aid Society of Southwest Ohio, Ohio Justice & Policy Center and Children’s Law Center Inc. Most recently, she served as senior director of community strategies at the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.

Ericka L. Copeland is the President & CEO of Cincinnati Youth Collaborative. Copeland previously was executive director of Wesley Community Services in South Fairmount. She has also held leadership positions at Mercy Health Partners and the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati. Her community work includes being the former president and member of the Cincinnati Public Schools Board of Education.

Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney, Esq. is a councilwoman for the City of Cincinnati She and her husband, Eric Kearney, own Sesh Communications, which publishes the Cincinnati Herald, a Cincinnati newspaper focusing on Cincinnati's black community. She stepped down as publisher of the Herald to serve as councilwoman for the city.

Chara is the Executive Director and CEO of Cincinnati Preschool Promise, a non-profit organization, expanding access to quality preschools in Cincinnati. Preschool expansion is made possible thanks to a significant investment from taxpayers who approved a 5-year Cincinnati Public Schools levy in 2016. The levy includes $33 million a year to strengthen K-12 education and $15 million a year to expand access to quality preschool.

Ericka Copeland is the president/CEO of the Cincinnat Youth Collaborative (C*C), a nonprofit that makes a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable young people in 2nd grade through college by providing a range of services designed to keep kids in school, prepared for college and career, and on the pathway to success.

Guyton Mathews is the superintendent of Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy (CCPA), a tuition-free, public charter school, offering high-quality education for grades K - 12. Located in the West End neighborhood of downtown Cincinnati, the campus includes three buildings as well as access to the Carl H. Lindner YMCA.

Robert A. Shapiro, MD is the director for the Mayerson Center for Safe and Health Children at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center. The Mayerson Center is a highly community-oriented center, treating children from 22 Ohio counties, as well as children from Kentucky and Indiana.

Joining us is Deborah Heater, Esq. and Sherman Bradley.

Deborah Heater is the Regional Director for the Dayton/Cincinnati Region of the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. Deborah began her focus on public service as a Municipal Investigator with the Office of Municipal Investigations (OMI), a division of the City Manager’s Office for the City of Cincinnati. She reviewed allegations of dysfunctional performance and misconduct. Her responsibilities included investigating allegations of police discharge of fi****ms; police-involved fatalities, injuries while in police custody, and use of excessive force. She also investigated allegations of unethical conduct involving employees, contractors, and government-funded nonprofits. She continued investigative responsibilities across her leadership roles regarding employment discrimination, sexual harassment, other forms of misconduct.

Sherman Bradley the CEO of Goodfit, LLC, an organization that provides diversity training, support and ongoing community development. Sherman is a former US Air Force Sergeant and ordained minister. He is the founder of Consider the Poor, LLC an advocacy, consulting and training organization that assists the public in understanding class, cultural competency and the conditions of poverty. In 2011-2012, he hosted a weekly radio show of the same name challenging the community to “Consider the Poor”. Consider the Poor sponsored HopeFest, an Annual Health and Education Festival in Downtown Cincinnati serving hundreds of children and families in poverty.
