Today I feel sad.

I think it is an appropriate sadness.

As I ponder Christ's suffering on this Good Friday - being beaten, rejected and murdered because of His great love for us - I welcome the tender affection that stirs in my heart.

I also feel sadness because His suffering was on behalf of a world that was broken and continues to be broken. Just this week I have sat with multiple others who have suffered intensely due to trauma, abuse, sin and sickness. My heart aches as I reflect now on the stories I have listened to and the hearts that have been broken as a result. At times, it feels like too much to bear.

I felt prompted to ask a question as I listened to one of the heartbreaking stories this week, "Do you have a sense of how Jesus views your pain?"

As I reflect on that question even now, Good Friday brings the answer into full focus for me. The sadness I feel toward Jesus' suffering and the suffering of my dear friends is the exact pain that He both experienced and died to redeem. The Lamb who was led to the slaughter is also our tender Shepherd.

"For the Lamb at the center of the throne
will be their shepherd;
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’
‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Rev. 7:17

Even now, tears spring to my eyes as I consider this present and future hope - the very tears that He understands, He also promises to wipe away.

Friend - how can He wipe away tears if we refuse to let them fall?

A blessed and sad Good Friday, friends. May you encounter a Savior today who is a Man of Sorrows, fully acquainted with your grief.

A single question for you to ponder this Good Friday: Do you have a sense of how Jesus views your pain?
