Things we wish we knew -

This episode is all about the things we  wish we would have heard before becoming moms. Not the cookie cutter responses that every mom hears like, "Nap when they do", "you are going to be sooo tired, but it's all worth it", or "you didn't know you could love something this much!" While all of those...

We know we have been quiet lately. We are revamping the podcast and our socials to reflect the direction we want to go. We will be back in April!

In the mean time, drop topics that you would like us to chat about. Nothing is off limits!

15/03/2022

We are taking a break to reset and create new content. Part of our goal this year was to show up and sometimes that means for ourselves. See you guys soon!

01/03/2022

We would love if you guys could rate and review us wherever you listen :)

Karoline wanted to fit into the perfect prom dress.

What innocently started off as loosing a few pounds to reach her goals, turned into an obsession.
Karoline of Dog Mom Mentality on Instagram and host of the Dog Mom Mentality podcast, joins us this week to talk about her eating disorder.

Not only does she share her story, but she also shares tips for how to approach someone struggling, what helped her in recovery, and what her relationship with food looks like now.

If you know someone who this episode might help, please don't hesitate to share it with them! When we allow ourselves to open up and be brave, we create a space for others to be brave as well! Thank you, Karoline, for being brave.

If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, you can:

When Dave enlisted for the National Guard in 2000, he thought he would ride out his 8 year contract, have a little adventure, and ride out the calm that the world was in. But his second day of basic training was September 11, 2001, and that changed everything. What followed has been a 22 years long career where Dave has witnessed, experienced, and survived things that most of us will never be able to understand.

In this episode, we chat with Dave about his military career, normalizing conversations around mental health, PTSD, adjustments when returning home, and the rising rate of su***de in the military. Does the military do enough for our servicemen and women? Tune in to find out.

What if we didn’t TRY to be the “perfect”
mom, friend, wife, etc…

What if we just chose to show up as the best version of ourselves instead?

We get these ideas in our head of what a perfect person could or should be. Maybe we blame social media for that…

But the truth is, we can’t compare our worst days to someone else’s best.

So just show up everyday as yourself, for yourself.

We would appreciate it!

Today is Superhero day at my son’s school. In years past, he always picked Spider-Man, Batman, or more “traditional” superhero’s. Today he wanted to go as a therapist. When I asked him why, he said, “Because my therapist helps save me from my bully thoughts!” So we dressed him up a bit, and I gave him some of my cards to pass out to friends and teachers at school, and he is so stoked.

He has been seeing a therapist for a couple of years now. His anxiety and OCD had reached points where his thoughts and actions were terrifying him and my husband and I realized we had done all we could and we needed more help.

He LOVES therapy and it has helped in so many ways. We talk about it and normalize therapy and mental health in our home as much as possible. If something doesn’t “feel good” we fix it, and that goes for minds and our feelings. I love that at 8-years-old, he knows this is a tool in his mental healthy toolbox that helps him and that he loves. I screw up a lot as a parent. But this feels like a win.

12:30pm. He’s late, as usual.

I’m sitting on the bench next to our favorite park watching my son and two daughters play. John is practicing his free throws for the thousandth time. Chasing the ball as it swishes through the net.
Lincoln is on the swings, attempting backflips.

“Sorry I’m late.” I hear his voice come up behind me as he slides onto the bench next to me. He dumps his camera bag on the floor and stretches his arm across the back of the chair.

His daughter runs to join John on the basketball court and the two begin a game of Horse. She looks exactly like him. Tall, dirty blonde hair and dark green eyes.

He hands me a cup of coffee. After smelling it, I begrudgingly take a sip.

“You always do that!” He says through laughs. “One time I spike your drink and you never trust me!”

I chuckle.

“How’s Molly?” I ask after another sip of coffee.

His wife just had their second kid; a beautiful little boy. Beautiful, olive skin like hers, and dark brown hair. Almost black.

“She’s great!” His eyes light up with excitement. “She and Tommy are both doing well.” He whips out his phone and shows me pictures of Tommy in the bathtub. He is so proud of his kids.

We watch our kids play as we chat about work, basketball practice, school and mom and dad’s upcoming 60th birthday party.

“Do you remember the giant rocket?” He asks out of the blue.

“How could I forget? We went to the park everyday before they took it out.”

“I would have loved for our kids to have seen that thing.”

He runs his fingers through his dirty blonde hair, his bangs falling into his eyes. He lets out a sigh.

“What’s wrong?” I turn to him.

He waits a bit to answer. With a big smile across his face he answers me, “nothing. Nothing at all.”

“Then why the big, dramatic sigh?” I laugh sarcastically.

He pauses again and turns towards me.

“I am just so lucky. I married the love of my life. I have two beautiful kids. Three awesome nieces and nephews. Our parents are awesome. I love my job and I have you.” He punches me in the shoulder.

He pauses, then looks back at the basketball court.

There’s nothing else I need.

I’m a stay at home mom.

When I was working, I had that escape to talk to adults and not constantly be touched or Covered in boogers.

I had the ability to “take a day off” and get paid for it.

I could eat my lunch in peace and my coffee wouldn’t be melted before I got to it.

I also missed a lot of firsts.

I love being able to be home but some days are just hard. I don’t love being home everyday.

I can’t afford to get sick because I have people who count on me.

And sometimes I feel like I can’t even complain because I know many people who would LOVE to stay home with their kids; my husband included.

My beautiful cousin, julie, reminded me that I need to put on my own oxygen mask first and that is a constant struggle for me.

I don’t want to be the mom that holds everything in until something so small makes me explode.

I just want to be the best mom I can be 🥺

Hi, I’m Sam! One half of our podcast duo. I’ve been married to my husband, Mat, for 7 years and we have two boys, john and Lincoln. We live in southern CA, with our two golden retrievers. I am retired from the workforce to stay home with my kids. I enjoy writing, playing with the dogs, and traveling.

Hi, I’m Julie. I live in a tiny corner of Washington State with my husband, Brandon, and two kids, Olivia and Cole, and our Golden Retriever, Josie. We love traveling and being outdoors. I own a small business that takes me all over southeastern Washington, which affords me a lot of time to binge listen to true crime podcasts. I like to collect running shoes, chocolate, and books...but not necessarily in that order.

Do we have anything in common?
