60 years ago this week, The Beatles touched down in the U.S. to appear on the “Ed Sullivan Show.” So many of the musicians we talk to cite this performance as the thing that made them realize they were gonna spend their lives making music. It’s pretty incredible.
To celebrate this momentous anniversary, we’re bringing you Season 2 of one of our favorite podcasts: #ALifeInLyrics with @PaulMcCartney. Get an inside look into the making of “Love Me Do,” and hear a bit more about their Ed Sullivan performance right now on #BrokenRecord.

Samuel T. Herring (@hemlock_ernst) reflects on finding a sense of belonging with @futureislands on the latest #BrokenRecord episode with @leah_rosey_rose, out now🎧

The Baltimore-based synth pop band @futureislands was first thrust into the national spotlight in 2014, after their TV debut on Letterman went viral. With their unassuming frontman Samuel T. Herring (aka @hemlock_ernst) dancing ecstatically onstage and the band’s unparalleled raw vulnerability, it’s easy to see why they’ve maintained such a lasting impact.
Samuel talks with @leah_rosey_rose about the band’s latest album, “People Who Aren’t There Anymore,” the physical toll his energetic performance style has taken on his body over the years, and his long-held gripe with guitar-based music on #BrokenRecord.

@sleater_kinney has long been a safe space for band members @carrie_rachel and @corintuckerband. What started as a band born out of the feminist punk riot grrrl scene in Olympia, Washington in the late 90s has grown into a life-affirming artistic endeavor.
On today’s #BrokenRecord, Carrie and Corin talk about their intimate recording relationship, how their sometimes opposing approaches to creative work complement one another, and dive into their new album, “Little Rope.”

It’s been a helluva year for singer/songwriter @noahkahanmusic. To date, he’s amassed 4 billion streams globally. Just three years ago, he started uploading snippets of his indie-folk songs to TikTok while waiting out the pandemic at his dad’s house in Vermont. Those songs quickly caught fire across social media, and eventually turned into Noah’s most recent album #StickSeason.
The Best New Artist Grammy nominee stops by #BrokenRecord to talk with @leah_rosey_rose about navigating his often overwhelming new-found success, and his plans for evolving his sound for his next album.

@ludwiggoransson is without a doubt one of the most accomplished and distinctive film composers of the 21st century. He has racked up dozens of writing, producing and scoring credits, including for one of the biggest movies of 2023: “Oppenheimer.”

After a run of successful albums over the last decade, in June @janellemonae released her fourth album, “The Age of Pleasure.” Co-written and produced with long-time collaborator @natewonderful, the album was just nominated for two Grammys, including Album of the Year. And lucky for us, we have the both of them on the podcast LIVE from the duo’s creative homebase in the Hollywood Hills. Janelle and Nate delve into the makings of the album and their creative relationship with @itsjrichmond on #BrokenRecord.
@corinnebaileyrae is an English singer/songwriter whose career started with a bang. In 2006, her debut album topped UK charts and was certified triple platinum with the help of her first hit single, “Put Your Records On.” A slew of awards and other “best new artist” distinctions followed.
As she released subsequent albums, Corinne aspired to stretch herself as an artist beyond neo-soul pop-music success. This sonic evolution shines through in her excellent, genre-hopping fourth album, “Black Rainbows,” which was released this September. It’s an album inspired by her time spent exploring Chicago’s historic Stony Island Arts Bank—a vast collection of Black cultural relics and writing.
On today’s #BrokenRecord with @itsjrichmond, Corinne talks about the years she spent in the Arts Bank archives and the stories that inspired her work, and how a skateboarding magazine helped clarify the look of her new album.

Anaïs Mitchell | Broken Record
What started out as a melody and handful of lyrics stumbled upon, seemingly out of nowhere, during a long drive between gigs became the musical Hadestown, which would define Anaïs Mitchell’s soon-to-be-explosive career for the next 14 years.
The DIY-community-theater-project-turned-Broadway-sensation has racked in eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. But when the pandemic shuttered theaters worldwide, Mitchell began writing songs about something she hadn’t touched on in years: herself.
From Hadestown to her hometown, Mitchell shares what it’s been like to build the underworld of the famous musical and how returning to Vermont shaped the songwriting process of her confessional early 2022 eponymous release, “Anaïs Mitchell”: https://apple.co/3N1NrBw
Bartees Strange has been making a name for himself as the musician that can do anything.
Not tied to a single sound, Strange flows from early aughts emo to auto-tuned hip-hop vocals to country blues with finesse and grace, born out of the freedom he first discovered in his early days going to Christian hardcore punk shows in the Midwest.
On today’s “Broken Record,” Justin Richmond talks to the artist about how he found his way back to music after years of working in the nonprofit world, and Strange breaks down the production process of tracks from his most dynamic project yet, “Farm to Table”: https://youtu.be/t3fiADlHXpo
