From Edsa and the eskinitas that lead to the seas down south, is our humanity grotesquely entangled in the wires and cobwebs in our society? It may come as ugly or grotesque. In the shared pulse of our pagka-Pinoy, we are Sorry not sorry.

『 s i g l o 』 is a founding-artist of Mahiwaga St , an artist-group (est.2023; to be launched in 2024) performing transformative exchanges. With a civic call for ASAP: All Streets At Play, the artists seek to influence lives, expressions, communities, cultures, histories and futures by programming activities, gatherings, performances, and learning encounters. Through the tools of culture, Mahiwaga St sprinkles its hiwaga (wonder/magic) in every encounter to various communities, identities, and cultures.
Everyentangledays is his first venture into Visual Arts practice.

It's the 2nd day of Boni Viva Luci 2024! Visit us at the shared art & light installation space across Mind Museum and Wolfgang's Steakhouse.

Here are some videos from the opening night yesterday, April 6, 2024.

Operating in the realm invisible to the naked eye, we shall unmask the gloom and portray the heroes in the shadows of our colorful existence as a nation.

"Into the Shadows are Heroes" is a 7-video light projection project that unveils both the miniature and spiritual complexities of Filipino nature guardians. The project seeks to exhibit mythic & folk tales. Presented in a mixed media stop-motion animation of shadow puppetry images, the projection exhibits life forms and mythical tales that co-exist in intertwining realms.

There are two recognizable tales, namely: the tale of Tungkung-langit and Alunsina, and Bathala's Creation folk tale. Most images are showcasing the elementals with how we humans perceive them, or believe them to be.

In between the urban, the progress, here lies beings that continue to be stewards of ecological nourishment. We as humans are reminded of such co-stewardship. In the celebration of Boni Viva Luci, we are reminded to celebrate the life forms that continuously sustain us...in a mythic sense (if it makes sense).

Boni Viva Luci will run from April 6-14, 2024 at the Bonifacio Global City. Into the Shadows are Heroes are visible from 6pm to 11pm.

Niaga
3 January 2024

A mythical serpent, the Niaga is present in architectural designs that has been installed in pillars of traditional houses such as the torogan. In 2019, we had the privilege of visiting the labyrinthine town of Tugaya. We witnessed how furnitures, instruments and handdicrafts were masterfully carved from hard wood into tangible cultural artifacts.

It is interesting to also undergo this sudden epiphany of rendering the Niaga -- first as a shadowcut, and now as an ink on journal -- as it is the Chinese Zodiac's year of the mythical serpent-like being, the Dragon. Things sometimes do happen in unexpected yet hopefully fateful ways.

I hope these personal attempts to borrow and implore the essence of the Niaga may bring protection and security in everyday life.

Today, I visited the University of the Philippines Los Baños to share about shadowplay in an Asian Theatre class handled by Mr. Virgilio Balanon. It's always fun to learn something new in workshops. In every encounter, there is a gift of learning and revelations. I hope the young artists may see how shadowplay may be implored as another creative and playful element in their future creative projects.
