📣 On Monday, October 21, 2024, Ukrainian intelligence reported the elimination of another Russian war criminal near Bryansk. The individual in question, Dmitrii Golenkov, was a pilot in the 52nd Heavy Bomber Regiment of the Russian Armed Forces (military unit 33310), based at the Shaikovka airfield, which operates Tu-22M3 strategic bombers. Golenkov also served as the chief of staff for this Russian aviation squadron.

👉 Golenkov was involved in missile strikes on Ukrainian civilian targets, including the Amstor shopping center in Kremenchuk, Poltava Oblast. During the attack on June 27, 2022, approximately 1,000 people were inside the shopping center. The strike, considered a war crime, resulted in 22 deaths and dozens of injured.

👉 Also on January 14, 2023, this very aviation squadron hit a nine-story residential building at 118 Naberezhna Peremohy Street in Dnipro, Ukraine. The strike destroyed one section of the building and 236 apartments. As of January 19 2023, the official number of killed stood at 46 people, including 6 children, with 80 others injured and 11 people missing.

Ukrainian intelligence reported that Golenkov’s body was found in an apple orchard in the village of Suponevo, near Bryansk. His death was attributed to multiple head injuries, likely caused by a hammer, — the intelligence service of Ukraine stated.

🇺🇦 Naïve mosaics are a colorful yet often-overlooked part of Ukraine’s Soviet-era art. Displayed in cultural centers, theaters, and even bus stops, they depict everything from cartoon characters to iconic figures like Taras Shevchenko.

🫶 While these mosaics may seem like remnants of the Soviet era, they were often created by local residents as a form of escape from the grim realities of the time. In an era where nonconformity was punishable, these mosaics embody Ukrainian creativity and the desire for self-expression. Their simplicity powerfully tells a story of resilience and community.

📰 The organizing committee of the TIFF film festival issued a statement announcing the suspension of the planned screenings of the film Russians at War, citing alleged information regarding significant threats to public safety and the festival’s operations.

Earlier, TIFF stated that the film „was not considered Russian propaganda” – despite the fact that Tromifova used to work for RT (Russia Today), an international Russian-controlled media broadcaster. In their new statement, TIFF reaffirmed this stance but explained that the decision was made „to protect the safety of visitors, staff, and volunteers”.

Meanwhile, according to Global News, Toronto police did not confirm any substantial risks surrounding the film’s screening. They noted that the decision was solely made by the organizing committee and was not based on law enforcement recommendations.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to Canada, Yulia Kovaliv, reacted to the news: “It is unfortunate that the festival did not have the courage to directly acknowledge its significant mistake in its reasoning,” she commented.

⚔️ No country in history has ever been handed independence—it has always been fought for and won.

Today, Ukraine continues that fight for freedom, making Independence Day much more than just a date on the calendar. It’s not yet another bank holiday - it’s a reminder of the resilience, courage, and unbreakable spirit of Ukrainian people.

Ukraine celebrates its hard-won independence from the Russian Soviet empire, and continues to stand strong against its modern successor. Each year, this day serves as a powerful symbol of the ongoing struggle and the unwavering determination to protect our future.

Around 90% of the whole Ukrainian power grid is razed to the ground by multiple deliberate Russian attacks. Even if some power generation facilities remain, there is an acute lack of electricity distribution facilities, which were easier to damage. To combat this deficiency, government operators introduced scheduled blackouts, where they cut the power supply, plunging entire cities into darkness during peak hours of electricity consumption. Even the capital city can have frequent blackouts up to 7 hours long.

On July 8, early in the morning, Russia conducted a massive missile strike all over central and east parts of Ukraine. The invaders used 38 rockets of various types targeting Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Slovyansk, and Kramatorsk.

The Ukrainian Air Defence shot down most of the missiles, yet Russian attack still caused enormous damage and civilian casualties. This wasn’t one of the biggest Russian attacks, but it became one of the deadliest.

Misogyny is not a joke. It's disrespectful, abusive, and downright primitive. No woman, anywhere in the world, should have to experience it. Yet, millions face mistreatment simply because they're women.

The WithUkraine team values gender equality and has zero tolerance for abuse. This is especially true for those who have fled war.

Abuse of any kind chips away at personal space, which can lead to a disregard for consent. This disregard can potentially escalate to SA and other forms of violence.

💔 Two years ago, May 16, 2022, Mariupol fell entirely under the occupation of Russian aggressors. The Azovstal defenders - more than 2,000 militants who stayed in the half destroyed buildings of the steel plant defending the remained civilians - received orders to save their lives and surrender to Russian captivity.

According to initial agreements, including those with the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross, assurances were given that the lives and health of Ukrainian prisoners of war would not be threatened. However, Russia does not adhere to the language of agreements in practice.

Today, together with Olenivka Community we are covering the life of Ihor Prokopenko - a young defender of Azovstal, who was killed by Russians in captivity.

🇺🇦Ukraine's approach to the day of the remembrance of the victims of the WWII as well as Victory Day has evolved, reflecting a deeper understanding of sacrifice and loss. Through the last decade the focus shifted towards honoring civilian and military lives lost, highlighting the true cost of victory.

In recent years old symbols like the St. George Ribbon took on new meanings amidst Russian invasion to Ukraine. The association with aggression led to a quest for alternative symbols.

22/04/2024

One of the reasons Russia is a strong opponent is that it operates with a centralized military budget covering not only direct military needs but also some seemingly civil areas. While numerous NATO members allocate scarcely 1% of their GDP to military expenditure, Russia allocated 4% prior to 2022, a figure set to rise to 6% according to the 2024 budget plan.

Well in advance of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian society had undergone extensive militarization. From a young age, children are subjected to an education emphasizing patriotic devotion to Russia, beginning as early as 7 years old. However, childhood is not the sole domain subjected to militarization; numerous aspects of daily life are heavily influenced by militaristic ideologies, though the underlying rationale for this militarization remains unclear. While an effort has been made to consolidate some of the most significant examples, it should be noted that this list is by no means exhaustive, and further discussion and additions can be facilitated in the comments section.

❗️On the morning of March 25, Russia launched a missile attack on Kyiv from the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimea. Ukrainian air defense destroyed both Russian ballistic missiles, but the debris caused damage in 4 central districts of the capital. As of 12:00 PM (Kyiv time), there are 7 wounded, including a 16-year-old girl.

In particular, residential and non-residential buildings, a road, as well as a part of the Boychuk Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design were damaged. Teachers and students did not have time to leave the premises, but only one person was injured.

We’ll be updating the post.

🩸 Zaporizhzhia.

Following a morning mass attack by the Russian army on March 22, 2024, the casualty count has reached 25 people. As reported by the local administration, an 8-year-old girl and her 35-year-old father lost their lives due to a Russian missile strike on a private sector in Zaporizhzhia. Additionally, a 62-year-old trolleybus driver, who was travelling along the Dnipro HPP dam at the time of the Russian strike, was also killed. There were no passengers aboard the trolleybus.

The sudden loss of these civilians has sadly become routine in Ukraine, reducing individuals to mere statistics. However, each victim was a living person with their own daily routines, habits, and moments of happiness. The team meticulously combed through local and national media, as well as local Telegram channels, and compared EXIF data files to reconstruct the final hours of "just another day" for another Ukrainian targeted by Russia.

🗓️ This week, much of the political conversation revolves around the imminent second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

However, the fact that today actually marks 10 years since the beginning of Russian armed aggression is much less often mentioned. In this post, we recall the events of the first days of the resistance to the occupation and frantic Ukrainian unity.

🇺🇦 The town of Avdiivka, Donetsk Oblast, has suffered a lot from Russian troops thoughout the last 10 years. It has been a frontline zone since September 2014 and it saw heavy combat way before the full-scale invasion. In late September of 2023, Russia has drastically intensified its efforts to capture the town, regardless of their own losses. For this couple of months, the city became unrecognizable, broken and practically non-existent.

After long defensive operations, on February 15, the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced their withdrawal from Avdiivka. In this post we will cover the role of Avdiivka in the war and discuss Russian strategy we have been observing for a long time already.

What would be your reaction if you (like us) would see a Reuters title for January 27th, 2024. Such a header reminds us: Ukraine still gets Russian money for Russian gas transfer to Europe, which seems counterintuitive at first and even outrageous given the everyday Russian rocket and drone attacks on Ukrainian residential areas. You might ask, «How can Ukraine still have any kind of economic ties with the aggressor state?» which is a valid question, but the answer is not what you could think.

The radical wing of the Republican party states multiple times, that “Ukraine is not a paragon of democracy, it banned 11 opposition parties”.

Those parties are indeed banned, but referring to them as “opposition” is not only inaccurate, it’s misleading. We took the example of one of the representatives of such “opposition”.

Read the carrousel till the end, and write in the comments what would you choose: “To ban or not to ban” such so-called opposition?
