Yoga can serve many different needs. The practices in this challenge are designed to help you relax and stretch while meditating on the words of Jesus. He brings us comfort when we relax in His presence.

Our final niyama is surrender. Although challenging, we find so much peace when we practice it.

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that at the proper time He may exalt you, casting your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.” I Peter 5:6-7

This week, we look at the practice of self-study. Do our words and actions show God in us?

2 Corinthians 13:5 “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? - unless indeed you fail to meet the test!”

The challenge is hosted on Facebook, so you will receive an invitation to join the private Facebook group. At the beginning of the challenge, you will set your own Sabbath goals by choosing and day of the week and the amount of time you want to devote to a Sabbath rest with God. You can also add any other goals you want to track with the accountability of the group. Each week in the Facebook group, you will receive a YouTube link to a yoga practice and goal tracker sheet to record your progress toward your goals. You will also receive a PDF of the daily Bible readings, prayer prompts and journaling prompts. You'll check in with the group each week for accountability. That's it! The challenge doesn't require huge amounts of time. It's more about setting aside time everyday for God. Join us and find out more at www.blessedyogabydiane.com.

Who should join this challenge? Anyone who wants to deepen their relationship with God through yoga, Bible study, prayer, journaling and spending time with Him would benefit from this challenge. Most of my students tend to be middle aged or older, but all ages are welcome. The yoga practices are relaxing and full of deep stretches. Most of the stretches are on the mat with very little standing. The physical focus of this challenge is flexibility, so it is not physically demanding. Join the challenge now and get more information at www.blessedyogabydiane.com.

The Thursday night flow class will not meet this week. Chair Yoga will look at contentment. Did you realize the context of Paul's famous statement in Philippians 4? When Paul says, "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength", he is referring to contentment. It is a challenge, but with God, we can live in contentment.

Accountability is a great way to set good habits. If you have someone checking on you to make sure you accomplish your goals, you're more likely to stick with it. That's one benefit of a challenge group. Others in the group are working on the same goals, so you hold each other accountable. A weekly check-in inside the private Facebook group gives us a way to be accountable. Registration starts July 30, so watch for the sign-up link.

I'm so excited to share this challenge with you! The purpose is to help us spend time with God. With so many things vying for our attention, you may wonder if you have time for this challenge. This challenge is about setting a habit of time with God not about long Bible studies and yoga practices. The yoga practices are each 30 minutes long, and you're only expected to complete it once a week. The devotionals are very short. The prayer and journaling prompts can take as long as you want. The physical challenge of increasing flexibility only required a few minutes each day. This challenge is designed to fit into your schedule and not add a lot of time to your day. The point is to make time for God everyday.

I hope you'll join me in September as we increase flexibility and spend time with the words of Jesus. Registration begins at the end of this month.

This week we begin our new session with the first niyama, purity. It is not just cleanliness. We want to be pure on the inside also.

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean." Matthew 23:27

Praying is just a conversation with God, so it should be easy, right? Do your prayers sometimes feel like an endless list of requests? Prayer prompts can help us find new conversation topics with God and deepen our Bible study by talking with Him about what we're studying. The "Stretch with your Savior" challenge beginning in September will provide you with prayer prompts to go with your Bible study, journaling and yoga practices. Watch for registration to begin at the end of this month.

This week we finish our study of yoga's yamas. The Apostle Paul gives us a list of things we should avoid in Galatians chapter 5. These works of the flesh remind me of the yamas. Let's look at that as we stretch and focus on God in our time together.

Do you have a goal to rest? Many of us have an exercise goal or a healthy eating goal, but rest is also an important part of health. Sabbath rest encourages us not just to rest physically but to incorporate a focused time with God.

My challenges always include a Sabbath rest goal that you set. You decide what day and for how long you will rest. That time is set aside to focus on God.

I hope you'll join the challenge in September!

Class is back this week with a look at nonpossessiveness. Nonpossessiveness can also be interpreted as nonattachment, nongreed, nonclinging, nongrasping, and noncoveting; we can simply think of it as being able to let go. What we try to possess, possesses us.

Christian yoga is a great compliment to a Bible study. In this challenge, the yoga practice is focused on deep stretching and the words of Jesus. The practices are mostly on your mat with very little standing work, so they are a great relaxation right before bed. Because they are presented as links to YouTube videos, you can do them anytime. The entire challenge is online, so you can add the yoga, Bible study, journaling and prayer into your schedule whenever it works for you and do it anywhere. You will receive one 30-minute practice each week, and your challenge is to complete the practice once during that week. The words of Jesus will be read throughout the practice with very little commentary. We will examine what Jesus tells us in more detail through the

Nonexcess, in Sanskrit literally “walking with God”, reminds us to enter each day and each action with a sense of holiness rather than indulgence. Do you remember the old tv commercial where the man exclaims, “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing!”? Overindulgence brings misery.
In I Timothy 6 we are told, “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that."

Nonstealing is our focus for this week. Have you considered this way of looking at stealing? We steal from others when we compare ourselves to them and take the focus from them. We steal from the earth when we behave like it is “mine”. We steal from the future when we aren’t grateful for what we have today. We steal from ourselves when we expect perfection and are critical. How might you need to change to avoid stealing?

This week we look at the yama of truthfulness. Are you honest about who you are or do you put on a mask for others? Do your actions align with what you believe? Are you honest with yourself when you commit to something? Can you follow through?
Proverbs 12:22 “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.”
