Hello there all!
Chibi_Zombie biting back at you with another review! This time for the Sony Exclusive, GodFall. So with that, lets sink our teeth into this 3rd person Looter Slasher game!
GodFall is a game brought to us by the team over at GearBox, a name that should sound familiar when you think about looter shooter or just looter style games in general, Borderlands.
Being one of the first games to officially release along side the PlayStation 5, GodFall brings both more then expected and not enough to the table at the same time.
The Game is rated T for Teen, meaning we are not going to see a lot of blood or cursing and while normally that would be just fine with me, GodFall could really use the blood to help sells it's fighting system.
While, yes it is cool to parry with a well timed shield block, then pushing the enemy into the ground and then driving your shield into their throat to rupture their windpipe, killing them full, and yes it is great to defeat one of the Champion mini bosses then grabbing their massive axe to gut them with it before slicing their throat with it. However, without the blood animation, it looks and feels almost limited, a final blow that involves enough force to bash a enemies head in, only to be met with no blood, not even a nose bleed!
The game does also have animated blood as one of it's "Warning" on the boxes but so far, I have seen none.
Now, hailing from Gearbox, GodFall has a very large Loot system and is the core concept behind the game, killing enemies, finding chest, doing bonus missions, all for the same goal, finding a more badass weapon then the one you have now! This loot systems is pretty legit too, finding a blade at the start of the mission might have 33 DPS and then after you level up, you may find a chest with that same blade but now at 38dps to go with the level or even so to help with the RGB system in place, you can (and will) find multiple weapons all with the same name, and DPS but make sure to take the time to look at new "roll" that comes with it because the effects can easily make the difference in certain situations.
Finding a blade called "I'm a Sword" may have the roll to increase soul shatter build up, which in itself is extremely useful in GodFall, and then you may find the exact same sword, same name, maybe 1 to 2 DPS higher, but have the perk, "3% chance of Chill" and you get to make the choice that suit your playstyle best, is the higher DPS worth it or keep the lower DPS with the higher soul shatter perk. It's these choices along with the armor and the weapon choices that make this game one that you can truly play your way.
Next we will cover the Gear, The game offers you multiple loadout's, 12 to be exact each requiring 2 resources that you can find from completing missions and looting bodies and chests in each "realm".
Every armor has a unique special attack that can be unleashed and all are different playstyle options from some that offer Bleed Damage to those that give you a higher defense, mixing and matching these with the weapon types the game offers is going to really allow the player to play freely or if you are part the fire team, seeing as this game's online feature allows parties of 3, allow you to provide the best level of support to your team.
With the Gear you have a few types of weapons, Long Swords, Great Swords, Polearm, dual blades, and War Hammer.
What makes these weapon styles so great, is outside of the amazing design each of these weapons have, the PlayStation 5 uses dynamic feedback in their controllers, meaning that if you are going in with a Hammer, you are going to feel like you are swinging a hammer and you are using twin blades you are going to feel like you are chopping though butter with ease, no two weapon types feel the same and that is going to be purely thanks to the feedback on the new PlayStation 5 controllers.
As for the Story now,
Don't expect a God Of War level story from this game, but it does deserve some attention, betrayed by your brother and now they are hungry for power and they want to become a god, you have to work together with those who can aid you against him and stop him before he becomes unstoppable. Yea, it is a revenge tale but also, I can't help but think that Orion, the spirt you are playing, is just a sore loser, they don't make it clear before he betrays you if you were also going to be doing what he is doing now.
Now the game has a pretty decent campaign length that will really allow you to get some cool gear and feel for what the after gameplay has to offer, but it is clear that this game is trying to go the route of other games such as Destiny, in providing repetitive missions to boost it's own longevity and the big part of the game is going to be the after gameplay modes with a fire team of up to 3 people.
On the bright side, while passing the topic of the fire teams, unlike other games that I have played that have an online focus, I don't feel like I HAVE to be online to play or win and I can really respect that because I don't have a lot of online friends who I can murder things with.
I will also add that when playing the open world modes in the game, to earn extra loot, they have multiple missions scattered throughout the realm that they you are currently on, however each one seems to so far be the same, you start one one up, you have to find 3 hidden objectives throughout the world, it feels more like forced world exploration then anything else.
The enemies you fight will be tough, you will die, and that is okay, part of the fun of games like this is the dying, then coming back with a better plan and just slaughtering them. The Game helps balance the level of combat by offering a pretty large skill system that you can access at your first level up, again, another way you can play your way, although I totally recommend getting the dodge slide as soon as you can.
So, overall here is this Zombie's break down of the Game.
Combat 8/10
Story 6/10
Loot system 9/10
Freedom of playstyle 10/10
Game over all, 7/10
The game is far from bad, but the missions in the free world leave a lot to be desired and the story does seem cliché, however, if you are fan's of the following, I would still strongly recommend that you try this game for yourself and let me know what you think!
Monster Hunter, Darksiders, Borderlands, Destiny.
So in closing, give the game a try if you can, but maybe wait till the $70 game goes on sale to closer to $40 or $50 even. Also, come watch me play it some time via Twitch, where I play, talk and complain all about video games!
Otherwise, feel free to comment below or message! I would love to hear your thoughts on the game!
Thank you everyone!
