Today we are featuring an article written by Leslie Walderman. A control master and a meta-focused player that will analyse for us the new reality after the recent B&R changes!

" A Brave New World

The recent set of bans put out by Wizards of the Coast will have massive repercussions on every format. This banning saw the elimination of Agent of Treachery and Fires of Invention from the standard format and a modification to the way Companions are played in every format. Companions now are taxed and are played from the hand rather than the Companion zone. These new rules severely punish the use of Companion cards. In this article I want to examine how one companion in particular, Yorion Sky Nomad, can still be used in an effective manner. We will look at an archetype that can be played in both Standard and in Pioneer.

Yorion forces you, the player, to have a deck of 80 cards instead of the regular 60 and he rewards you for playing permanents with enter the battlefield (ETB) effects. It is important to note that Yorion does not care if these ETB triggers come from creatures, artifacts or enchantments. ETB effects are one of the factors that should be heavily considered in a Yorion deck.

This Orzhov control deck is built to maximise ETB effects while having a solid game plan. In the early stages of the game you want to be developing your mana through things such as Birth of Meletis or disrupting your opponent’s hand by means of Burglar Rat. One-for-one trading of resources isn’t as punishing since you have Treacherous Blessing to “gas up”. Charming Prince can be used in the early stages of the game to scry towards lands if required however, it is more ideal if he can be saved until the mid and late game when he really shines. Hopefully this game plan will allow you to transition to the mid-game and the establishment of your deck’s engine.

The mid-game is perhaps the most difficult and complex portion of this deck. Generally speaking your mid-game is removal based. This removal is either from spells (Despark) or from permanents (Oath of Kaya). Kaya’s Wrath gives the deck the ability to recover from falling too far behind on the board. If you can manage the board state effectively enough landing an uncontested Doom Foretold should be backbreaking. It is important to always be thinking about the three pillars of this deck; Doom Foretold, Elspeth Conquers Death and Treacherous Blessing. These three enchantments either answer threats on the board or provide card advantage to transition you into the late game. The pillars also play towards the deck’s strengths and start the card advantage engine.

The late game is where the deck ultimately wants to progress. It is a very slow deck that attempts to lock out and wrath the opponent until it can slowly kill them with underwhelming creatures and creature tokens. Blink effects are the crux of the late game plan in this deck. These effects are provided by Yorin and Charming Prince. Some of the most advantageous ETBs to flicker are:

1) Burglar Rats / Basilica Bell-Haunts = making the opponent discard additional cards.
2) Elspeth Conquers Death = exiling multiple permanents with the same conquers death and constantly taxing your opponent with the second chapter of the enchantment.
3) Prince Yorin Loop = Charming Prince and Yorin can set up a loop of flickering that occurs at the end step. This loop CAN be disrupted with removal but will provide a lot of value if it goes unanswered.
4) Oath of Kaya = Resetting this Oath can benefit you in four ways; killing Planeswalkers at low loyalty or stopping an ultimate, destroying creature threats, burning out your opponent and helping to pad your life total.
5) Treacherous Blessing = Yorin can flicker this enchantment allowing you to redraw three cards.

In addition to the game plan listed above the deck has three copies of Kaya, Orzhov Usurper. This Planeswalker has a lot of relevance in standard at the moment. Cat/Oven decks make use of graveyards and Kaya can help keep them clear. If these decks are red based she can also make sure that Kroxa isn’t an issue later in the game. She is also instrumental against Uro decks through her management of the graveyard. Kaya can also make opponents’ Elspeth Conquers Deaths worse by exiling all relevant cards from their graveyards. Kaya’s minus ability isn’t as important in the current standard format but will have its uses – such as exiling Shark Typhoon tokens.

I will be the first to admit that the sideboard is very much a work in progress. It was made to address the previous format and things may need changing. There are cards in the standard card pool that can be looked at like Cavalier of Dawn and Ethereal Absolution. I have also considered cards such as Seraph of Scales and Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord in the main deck to provide additional grindy elements to the deck. The deck itself is in no way a finished product but, it’s finished enough to play and preform. 1-2 copies of Flicker of Fate may also be interesting main deck inclusions as another way to trigger ETB effects.

As we move into the pioneer format the card pool increases and the deck gains access to older more powerful cards. Demonic Pact and Trial of Ambition are two cards that fit the deck and play to its’ strengths. Pact isn’t being “donated” but merely used as a value engine. It is being reset with Yorin or Flicker of Fate and it can be sacrificed by means of Doom Foretold. This is just a starting point for the Pioneer version of the deck. But, I believe this deck has legs in the Pioneer format now that Companions have been weakened."

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet!

Continuing the journey of my favourite cards, today we are featuring Kalitas!

He has lifelink, he makes zombies, he exiles opponents' creatures, he get's bigger, he doesn't die to bolt. How is this card not played in every single black deck!

Well, 4 mana is not easy for an eternal format deck to afford, especially for a card that doesn't have an effect on the battlefield as soon as it enters. No one wants to spend their turn 4, tap all their mana, just to lose their creature to a 1-mana removal (fatal push).

So, is Kalitas bad? By no means, he makes for a great sideboard answer to many decks. He is great against aggressive strategies, great against graveyard strategies and he can take over a midrange game.

Personally I have played this card in standard, pioneer and modern. Never disappointed, but then again, I don't get disappointed easily!

Do you have any cool stories involving our favorite Vampire?

Dragonlord Ojutai!
If you were playing during Khans of Tarkir standard block then this card would need no explanation. This marvelous dragon instantly brought fear to my opponents eyes and would stop them dead in their tracks. With its ability to fly high and gain card advantage this card would be the chosen finisher for many control players back in its day.
I still reminisce about the special times I’ve had playing with this card and I am always trying to slide this magnificent creature in any pioneer or modern decks.
Favourite card to pair this dragon up with? Silumgar’s Scorn!

When did you start playing magic? Have you ever faced the wrath of this bomb?

The May 2020 season on MTG Arena is now over. Really tried hard to make it for the qualifier in the last days but unfortunately I finished at a mere 91% 😢

That's OK though! New month, new challenges. We can do it! 😃

I have included the 3 most used decks that helped me get there. The most fun of the three was certainly Temur Yorion. The most consistent was Yorion Jeskai, and the fastest was Cycling. So I was cycling (ba dum tss) through them based on the meta and my mood!

Hopefully very soon we will be streaming our efforts back to Mythic!

We would really appreciate it!

Sidisi, Brood Tyrant!

Continuing the discussion about cards that made me love the game! I have only played her in standard and briefly pioneer but I know she is a powerhouse in EDH as well!

I usually don't like relying on luck but it's a thrill to see if you'll mill a creature or not! A little too easy to die, but can generate tons of value! For some time I thought she makes a zombie for every creature cards she mills :( disappointed.

Favourite card to pair her up with? Whip of Erebos!

Have you ever tried Sidisi? What's your opinion? Any tricks and cards to pair her up with?

Please share and like our page & group ❤️

Gray merchant of Asphodel!

"The Asphodel Meadows is a section of the ancient Greek underworld where ordinary souls were sent to live after death."

Most players I know, have some kind of strong feelings towards this card! For me, it's where it all started! I remember myself being new to magic (when theros was out) and shopping online for "a deck that wins fnms" . Someone had a mono-black devotion deck for sale, so I caved. Since then, every time I register this card, I am awaiting, like a kid during Christmas, to draw it and (hopefully) end the game. Many times, I will get punished because "draining for 4 isn't good enough", but I have no regrets. I use him as a wallpaper, I use him in 3 color decks, I use him as a board-stall breaker. He is my pet-zombie.
