Discover the Eixample of Barcelona
When in Barcelona, you will almost certainly wander around the Eixample, an expansive district with charming modernist buildings and an elegant layout made of ample streets and low-rise square blocks.
The Eixample or “extension” was a revolutionary urban plan built in the late 19th century to respond to population growth driven by the industrial revolution. It was so visionary that it remains largely untouched today, after 150 years.
Its architect, Ildefons Cerdà, was horrified by the conditions of the working class in Barcelona and set out to make his extension of the city a model of clean, safe, and hygienic urban living.
Tune in to the Barcelona episode of TravelZoom to learn more about the Eixample with architecture blogger Fourth Wall (IG: @wall.fourth).
