DOUBLE-BOOKING-BAIT-AND-SWITCH SCHEME 🔪🩸

Shray Goel, accused of running an Airbnb scam in which he allegedly double-booked properties and refused refunds, has been arrested and charged with wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. According to a 20-page indictment, Goel's scheme involved using fake profiles to make over 10,000 reservations on Airbnb, resulting in $7 million in payouts.

His modus operandi was a "double-booking-bait-and-switch scheme," where he would book multiple guests for the same property on the same dates, allowing the highest-paying renter to stay while making excuses to cancel on others. Goel and his associates would then contact the lower-paying renters at the last minute, offering them alternative properties, often of lower quality.

This left renters in a difficult situation, as they had to make quick decisions in unfamiliar places. Goel profited by running secret bidding wars for his properties and often refused refunds to entitled guests. He also used pseudonyms and others' identities to list properties he controlled.

These allegations largely match what was uncovered in a Vice investigation, which led to policy changes at Airbnb. Goel also operated a similar scheme on Vrbo before being banned from the platform in 2015. Airbnb supported the investigation and thanked law enforcement for their work. Goel has not publicly commented on his arrest.

the airbnb nightmare has finally come to an end...for now🩸

After 575 days, Elizabeth Hirschhorn was removed from a lavish Brentwood guesthouse she allegedly occupied rent-free. The homeowner, Sacha Jovanovic, initially welcomed her via Airbnb for a six-month term that drastically extended. As LAPD officers and movers cleared out Hirschhorn's possessions, Jovanovic and his lawyer took steps to reclaim the property, even as the case for damages persists. Despite disputes, including a $100,000 relocation fee request by Hirschhorn and her denial of allegations, the "tenant from hell" saga turns a new page following the eviction's dismissal.

Florence has banned new short-term listings like Airbnb in its historic center to prioritize housing for locals. Landlords who switch from short-term to regular leases will receive a three-year tax break. The move comes as Airbnb listings rose from 6,000 in 2016 to 14,378, causing ordinary rents to increase by 42%.

The city's mayor, Dario Nardella, emphasized the strain on local residents. While similar measures are seen globally, this decision faces opposition in Italy, with some stating it curtails market freedom. Meanwhile, national legislation is in the works to regulate short-term rentals more closely.

In Los Angeles, an Airbnb guest, Hirschhorn, occupied a Brentwood guest house for over 18 months without payment and now demands $100,000 to leave. The property's owner, Sascha Jovanovic, failed to get proper permits for the rental. When he tried to evict Hirschhorn, she discovered the property's lack of city approvals, preventing eviction. Courts have sided with Hirschhorn. Jovanovic is now seeking $58,000 for unpaid rent, while Hirschhorn has countersued for various violations. The situation showcases the potential risks of Airbnb in cities with strict tenant laws.

The author, after spending a month alone in Medellin, Colombia, decided to make local friends and rented a room in a penthouse owned by a host named Ihab. The Airbnb listing featured a unique pet, a pig named Carbón, as a bonus.

Although the pig was domesticated, he had tusks and wasn’t as cuddly as anticipated. Carbón was given free reign of the house in the mornings, displaying amusing antics and a considerable appetite, sometimes aggressively seeking food and displaying various tricks on command.

However, the pig’s unpredictable behavior made the author increasingly uncomfortable, leading them to spend more time with Leila, Ihab’s unmentioned pet dog, who proved to be less nerve-wracking and better company.

Despite a childhood incident that left the author wary of dogs, Leila helped ease this resentment. In the end, the author found solace in the company of man’s more traditional best friend, rather than the unique but troublesome pet pig.

Airbnb is tackling the issue of fake listings, which has been a significant problem for the platform, affecting consumer trust and the company’s reputation. Airbnb has already removed 59,000 such fraudulent listings this year and stopped another 157,000 from being added to the platform.

The company is leveraging AI technology to authenticate listings in its top five markets including the U.S. and the U.K. The hosts will be required to use the Airbnb app from inside the listed property where GPS will confirm the location, and AI will compare live photos with the images used in the listing. Those properties that clear the verification will get a "verified" icon, starting February.

CEO Brian Chesky emphasized the risk fake listings pose to the company's reputation and stressed the importance of trust in booking decisions for users. The company is also introducing “seasonal dynamic pricing” technology, allowing hosts to adjust prices in real-time, similar to airlines and hotels.

Chesky mentioned that the company received feedback about Airbnb losing its affordability, and as a response, over 260,000 listings have lowered or removed cleaning fees this year. Moreover, more affordability and pricing changes are planned, with the company continuing to explore additional measures to enhance user experience and trust.

Recently, a local resident named Cathy called into The Ramsey Show to get advice on whether she should buy property to turn into a vacation rental in order to capitalize on those seasonal visitors. Cathy and her husband already have a rental unit that pays them $1,700 per month, but she could borrow against their primary residence to get a $280,000 property she could turn into an Airbnb. However, Dave Ramsey cautioned her not to ruin her life by doing so 2.

Ramsey is worried that while listing your home on a short-term rental site like Airbnb or Vrbo sounds like a great idea in theory, running a short-term rental property can quickly turn into a nightmare. Maintaining an Airbnb is essentially like operating a small business and requires a lot of work.

A TikTok user named Anna shared a "travel hack" to save money on Airbnb rentals. She suggests saving the phone numbers of Airbnb hosts and then contacting them directly to negotiate a lower price, offering to pay in cash and sometimes as low as 50% of the listed price.

She claims this method has saved her thousands of dollars. However, travel experts warn against this hack, saying it could be risky and potentially dangerous. Airbnb has safeguards in place to protect both hosts and guests, including cancellation policies, damage protection, liability insurance, and more.

Using alternative methods like paying in cash can lead to a lack of protection, cancellation of your stay, scams, and potential legal repercussions. Experts advise against bypassing Airbnb's platform for communication and payments, as it undermines the protections the platform offers.

The reader received an email from Airbnb informing them that their account had been removed from the platform. The email provided no specific reason for the removal and stated that Airbnb had reviewed the case thoroughly. The reader couldn't understand the ban as their recent booking experiences involved a host cancellation and an illegitimate listing that Airbnb had provided. The reader reached out for help to understand the situation.

The columnist suggests that recent Airbnb bans often occur due to background checks revealing criminal records, but in this case, that wasn't applicable. Airbnb's Terms of Service outline reasons for account termination, such as policy violations or protection concerns. The reader's profession as a journalist raises the possibility that their articles about Airbnb could have played a role.

The columnist recommends looking for properties with positive ratings and reviews when booking on Airbnb. If issues arise during a rental, contacting Airbnb promptly is advised. The reader's husband and friend might have made an innocent mistake in their Las Vegas rental.

The columnist contacted Airbnb on the reader's behalf, and the company reactivated their account. Airbnb did not disclose the specific reason for the ban due to privacy concerns, but the reader's account has been restored. 🩸
