MALAKAL
JUBA, 31 May 2024 – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is deeply concerned about the outbreak of violence in Malakal, Upper Nile state, which led to the deaths of several people yesterday.

Tensions also remain high in the UN Protection of Civilians Site adjacent to the Mission’s base in the state.

“Such violence causes lasting harm to communities and also prevents UNMISS from continuing our vital protection and peacebuilding work,” cautioned Nicholas Haysom, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the UN Peacekeeping mission.

UNMISS urges state and local authorities as well as government security forces to maintain stability and order in the area, including around the UN Protection of Civilians Site and Malakal town.

Furthermore, it calls on feuding parties to show restraint and use dialogue to resolve outstanding issues peacefully.

The Mission is continuing to work with the state government, community leaders, and security actors to ensure calm prevails.

What is happening in Malakal between Akoko/Baliet communities does not yet equate to a war. That is why it is very difficult to achieve any peace which is the opposite of war. And "you cannot make peace if you are not ready for war" as one of generals have stated long time ago.

The "Hit and Run Tactics" applied up to now will not bring us to 'a quick ending' of the conflict and therefore, it will continue to bring headache and shame to the SPLM and the government which have the primary responsibility to protect its citizens. The Shilluks are also citizens of South Sudan. Where do you want them to go on this planet?

Fore those who still think that the Shilluk-out of the fear of being killed in cold blood- will at end give up their ancestral areas east of the Nile, I assure you that they are only just 'Day dreaming'. The Shilluks of the Eastern Nile will remain their to their last blood. And this means that there will be everlasting bloody conflict in the region! and when there is no peace for the Shilluks; there will also be no peace for the others! And neither will their areas witness any development or stability too. For 'the running Shilluk' will also means 'the running Akoko/Baliet' communities. Then what is the benefit here?

Therefore, it is high time for the government to step in more seriously this time and bring the two sides on the table of negotiation inorder to arrive to a lasting peace deal.
General Olony have already signed an agreement with the government. An agreement which did not include or represented the Padang Communities as a party to the conflict in the region.
It is clear from the agreement that the government was representing itself alone as The Government. But where is the Padang which were also fighting the Ageelek Forces? Or was the overnnenment representing them too or signed on their behalf?

In a landmark ruling, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) has sided with Qatar National Bank (QNB), demanding South Sudan to pay over $1 billion. The dispute revolves around a $700 million loan granted to South Sudan by QNB in 2012. GOVERNOR ODHOK PAYS HOMAGE TO KING KWONGO DAK AT THE KING'S ROYAL PALACE IN FASHODA

May 11, 2024—Malakal

The governor of Upper Nile State has paid a courtesy visit to H.M. Kwongo Dak, the reigning King of Chollo Kingdom at his Royal Palace in Fashoda.

This visit by the governor was to pay homage to the king who has been instrumental in reconciliation and peace-building efforts in Upper Nile State.

While on his way to Fashoda, the governor stopped at Kufuri L*l where he strongly admonished the government forces stationed there , urging them to take as paramount the protection of civilians.
He sternly told them that having put on uniform of the country means taking the country as their only tribe, therefore it is incumbent upon them to maintain security for all the South Sudanese staying or passing that area.

Upon his arrival in Kodok town, Governor Odhok was accorded a warm reception by County authorities, with citizens there expressing their recognition of the governor's peace and reconciliation efforts in the state.
