내가 유튜브 영상을 찍었던 서울함 공원에서 드라마 촬영을 했다. 내가 다루었던 장소를 드라마에서도 다룬다는 게 놀라웠다. '내가 하는 일을 그들도 하는구나', '그동안 내가 했던 일들이 다 부질 없는 것은 아니었구나' 라는 생각이 들었다. 마치 지도 하나 없이 산을 오르다 나와 같은 길을 가는 전문 산악인들을 만난 느낌이었다. "뜻이 있는 곳에 길이 있다"라는 내 개인적인 믿음이 현실이 된 날이었다.
I appeared in a Korean TV show filmed on Seoul Battleship Park where I shot my YouTube video. It was amazing that the TV show also deals with the place I did. I thought 'They also do what I do', 'The things I've done weren't all meaningless'. I felt I met professional mountaineers going the same way, while hiking up a mountain without a map. It was the day my belief, "Where there's a will, there's a way", became a reality.

잠두봉은 1866년 흥선대원군이 조선에 있던 천주교도들을 처형했던 곳이다. 당시에는 서양이 동양에 대한 지배력을 넓혀가던 시기였고, 이에 흥선대원군은 서양을 배척하기 위해 조선의 천주교 신자들을 박해하기 시작했다. 그러자 조선에 있던 천주교 신자가 프랑스 군에 도움을 요청해 프랑스 군이 잠두봉 인근을 순찰하고 강화도를 점령하는 등 조선을 침략했다. 결국 흥선대원군은 조선에 외세를 들인 죄로 잠두봉에서 수많은 천주교도들을 처형했던 것이다.
Jamdubong Peak is the place where Heungseon Daewongun, the regent of Joseon, executed numerous Catholics in Joseon in 1866. At that time, the West was expanding its control over the East, and Heungseon Daewongun began persecuting Catholics in Joseon to exclude the West. Then, a Catholic in Joseon asked French forces for help, and the France forces invaded Joseon by patrolling near Jamdubong Peak and occupying Gangwhado Island. Eventually, Heungseon Daewongun executed numerous Catholics at Jamdobong Peak for bringing foreign forces in Joseon.

군시절의 추억이 떠올랐던 날. 살수차가 비를 뿌려대고 훈련 대장의 불호령이 떨어지니 우리들은 이내 진흙 투성이가 되었다. 몸은 고단했지만 오랜만에 진흙탕에 몸을 뒹굴렀더니 왠지 모를 해방감이 느껴졌다.
A day evoking memories of my army days. As a water truck sprayed rain and the training commander roared, we became muddy soon. Even though I was weary, I felt a kind of sense of release after wallowing in the mud.

Gangwha Island is to the west of Seoul. It had been served as a gateway that foreign forces going to Hangseong (Seoul) had to go though since the old days. 강화도는 서울 서쪽에 있는 섬으로서 예로부터 한성으로 들어오려는 외세는 반드시 거쳐야 하는 관문의 역할을 했던 곳이다.

백년전, 어떤 곳인지도 모를 한반도에 왔던 그들. 정치적인 이유에서였든 자신의 구원을 위한 것이였든, 분명한 건 그들은 기꺼이 선교의 고통을 감내 했다는 것이다. 어쩌면 나도 그들처럼 어떤 믿음을 증명하기 위해 삶의 고통을 감내하는 것은 아닐까?
A hundred years ago, they came to the Korean peninsula where they didn't know. Even if I'm not sure if it was for political reason or their own salvation, it's still clear that they were willing to endure the pain of missionary work. Maybe, like them, I keep enduring pain of life to prove a faith.
