Ex-Accountant General begs for time to refund looted funds
A former acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Anamekwe Nwabuoku, on Wednesday, pleaded with Justice James Omotoso of the Federal High Court in Abuja to give him more time to conclude the refund of the public funds allegedly looted by him and his co-defendant.
Nwabuoku and his co-defendant, Felix Nweke, are facing 11 counts of money laundering to the tune of N1.6bn.
They are being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The defendants were accused of committing to the act while Nwabuoku served as the Director of Finance and Accounts in the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and 2021.
While Nwabuoku is the first defendant, Nweke is the second defendant in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/240/24 dated May 20 and filed on May 27 by EFCC counsel, Ekele Iheanacho.
Nwabuoku was appointed acting AGoF on May 20, 2022, under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari after Ahmed Idris was suspended as AGF over alleged N80bn fraud.
He was, however, removed in July 2022, a few weeks after assuming office.
When the matter was called on Wednesday, the defendants prayed the court to halt their arraignment until another date to perfect the refund.
Nweke’s lawyer, Emeka Onyeaka, informed the court that there was a new development in the case.
He told the court that his client had taken steps towards settling the matter.
The lawyer said Nweke had made substantial refunds of the money traced to him by the anti-graft agency.
“The second defendant has taken steps, as there is a communication to the commission via-a-vs the alleged offences on making a refund.
“The commission is in receipt of the money and promised to communicate to us,” he said.
The defence counsel said upon being served with the charge, “We communicated with the commission and we were asked to tarry for their administrative procedure.”
He said since a substantial amount had been refunded, if his client was arraigned, such action would affect the trial.
He, therefore, prayed the court to grant them an adjournment to take further steps on the administrative procedure.
Maduakolam Igwe, who appeared for Nwabuoku, aligned with Onyeaka’s submission.
Igwe said his client had equally taken the same steps and that a substantial amount had been refunded.
“We have written to the commission on this. The first defendant has also made some refunds.
“May I adopt the submission of my learner friend to tidy up the administrative procedure,” he corroborated.
Responding, counsel who appeared for the EFCC, Ogechi Ujam, acknowledged that though the commission was in receipt of a proposal letter, she said, “No negotiation has been made, no settlement has been done and no agreement has been reached by parties.
“In the circumstances, we urge this honourable court to allow us to arraign the defendants.”
After hearing the parties out, Justice Omotosho adjourned till October 14 for arraignment.

President Tinubu Announces N2 Trillion Economic Injection Plan

President Bola Tinubu announced on Thursday that his government aims to inject N2 trillion into the economy within the next six months.

During the inauguration of his Presidential Economic Coordination Council (PECC), which consists of representatives from various sectors of society and the economy, President Tinubu shared the results of his assessment of the fast-tracked stabilization and progress plan.

At a session with reporters at the State House following the inauguration, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, provided a detailed explanation of the sectors set to receive emergency funding. These sectors include Health, Agriculture, Energy/Power, and other key areas.

Mr. Edun stated, “The President has just inaugurated the Presidential Economic Coordination Council, which includes the President’s Economic Management Team, the Legislature—represented by the leaders of the National Assembly, the Senate President, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives—and very importantly, the sub-nationals, represented by the chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, as well as the elite of the private sector."

“They were presented with the outcomes of Mr. President’s review of the accelerated stabilization and advancement plan, an emergency plan covering the next six months, which Mr. President directed to be developed by his Economic Management Team, sub-nationals, and the private sector."

Mr. Edun outlined that the N2 trillion package includes N350 billion for Health and Social Welfare, N500 billion for Agriculture and Food Security, N500 billion for the Energy and Power sector, and general business support amounting to about N650 billion.

“In addition to a range of policy measures and tax initiatives, there are a series of executive orders signed by Mr. President and being gazetted to ease the cost of doing business during this period,” he added.

ODD NEWS: Nigerian woman creates world’s widest wig at almost 12 feet

A Nigerian wigmaker added a second Guinness World Record to her resume when she stitched a hairpiece that measures almost 12 feet wide.
Helen Williams, 31, who previously earned the Guinness World Record for the longest handmade wig at 1,152 feet and 5 inches, took on the challenge of creating the world's widest wig.
Williams spent one month creating her latest masterpiece from more than 800 bundles of hair, successfully creating a wig that's 11 feet, 11 inches wide -- 1 inch wider than a Mini Cooper is long.
"As a professional wigmaker, I look forward to breaking many more records in the wig category. I enjoy taking on difficult tasks, it makes me a better person and I learn new things," Williams told Guinness World Records.
Williams said the wig, which she decorated with 1,000 rhinestones, is on display in her office.
"I want my children and great grandkids to grow up and see the widest wig," she said. "The wig is now part of history."

The Delta State Police Command has arrested three men for wrongly accusing some of its officers of stealing their gold chains, supposedly worth N50 million, during a stop-and-search operation.

The command's Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, disclosed this in a post, accompanied by a video, on X.com on Tuesday.

His caption read, "So yesterday, these three guys were accosted by men of RRS, searched, and allowed to go, only for them to come back later in the evening, alleging that their gold worth was stolen by the policemen.

"The policemen were humiliated for simply doing their job; well, the rest is history. "Please watch for the full gist."
