You know when Never Mind The Bo****ks came out, I did not like it one bit. I was into John Lennon, The Alan Parsons Project, Barclay James Harvest, Genesis, you know “serious” music. Oh and Smokie, I did like Smoke and Hank The Knife And The Jets. Nowadays I feel like I missed out on so much by being born in Germany. In reality, the UK at the time was a toilet, and Germany was scared of the Bader Meinhof folk, France dealt with violent attacks on Gaullism and Communism, the decline in French geopolitical power, and the end of postwar economic growth which led to unprecedented unease about the Gallic Rooster’s (France) collective future. What a mad world our wee Europe was, and not an EU in sight.
Then, after leaving Paris (I lived there on and off for 3 years), in the mid ‘80s I moved to Berlin - my Berlin…
S**t - that place was PUNK! And we loved it. Sharing spaces, bed in squats like our predecessors in Schöneberg, only we went to the American occupied sector that was Kreuzberg. We literally shared everything. There was no “yours” or “mine” etc. If I had something, you did too and vice versa.
Was it political? ABSOLUTELY!! Thursday nights we’d go Skinhead-Knocking. Like so many things in them days our Skinheads were neo-nazis and other confused souls, and not the peace and culture loving Ska and Reggae dancing lovelies from old Blighty. We had lots of Turkish and Italian friends living with us and they were given a hard time by the Skins, so we declared solidarity with our brethren, and it became a sort of, short lived tradition…
Anyway, I’m waffling on here, Never Mind The Bo****ks is going to be 47 years old in October and I now absolutely love this record. Incredible guitar and bass paying by ole Steve Jones, tight drumming by Paul Cook, and vocalising his momentous lyrics was the rotten John Joseph Lydon, also referred to as Johnny Rotton. All thanks to Chris Spedding who gave them Pistols free studio time, and who just let the lads work it out. Magic! 🐻

Folk ask why I'm so close to my Native American families. Other than the love and kindness I experienced at the fires of the most under represented people on this planet, if only you knew how long and deep the hate, neglect and suffering for my sisters and brothers has been going on. And today, they’re still stealing their lands, polluting their waters and yet shouting “the land of the free”. Yeah, as long as you comply, and you’re not a true native of this beautiful land. This letter was written in 1952, and came from the Tekakwitha Indian Mission in South Dakota. 1952 - please let that sink in… 1952! The governments have set aside a couple of billion US$/Can$ to be paid out in case of successful lawsuits. Money will never bring back the smiles of the innocent children who should’ve been with loving parents, not vile predators. T’áá hwó’ají t’éego (until we meet again) - Emaho! 🐻

There will never be another Jerry Garcia. And I miss him as much as ever...

At one point after Jerry's passing, I was alone visiting a beach in Hawaii. Two huge Samoan guys just got back from spearfishing and they emerged from the water like creatures from the dark lagoon. They were as massive as sumo wrestlers and they were carrying spearguns with them, for fishing purposes. But, you know, a weapon's a weapon. And to prove it, they had dead fish hanging off their belts. I kept my cool when they started walking right toward me, but I'd be bluffing if I said I wasn't a bit nervous. When they approached, all they said was, "Sorry to hear about da kine." They were speaking in Hawaiian Pidgin - local slang - but were talking about Jerry.

He would've loved that, like it was some sort of prank that made up for the time the dive instructor in Kona asked him for his autograph, 20 feet below the surface. It made me smile. Jerry was "da kine."

It showed just how far and wide his reach was, and how deeply he was embedded in the American consciousness.
Love you, brother.
