The loss of Don “Pappy” Sutton has created a void which cannot be filled. He was a visionary, a leader, a mentor and a friend to many. He changed lives and saved lives. Pappy deeply loved his “children” at Saint a Michael’s College Fire and Rescue. He will me be missed.

We join the Hinesburg Fire Department in mourning the loss of Deputy Chief Eric Spivack. A tremendous loss for the emergency service community in our great county.

It is with profound sadness and grief that Chief Nicholas Baker and the Hinesburg Fire Department announce the Active Duty Death of Deputy Chief Eric Spivack, promoted posthumously from the rank of Assistant Chief.

Deputy Spivack was at home in Hinesburg yesterday tending to outdoor chores when he experienced a medical episode resulting in sudden cardiac arrest.

Deputy Chief Spivack began his fire service career in Massachusetts on November 10th, 1986 as a call firefighter with the Fairhaven Fire-EMS Department. Eric moved to Hinesburg in 1998 and joined the Hinesburg Fire Department on July 7th, 1998. Deputy Spivack rose through the ranks of Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain and Assistant Chief during his service to the Town of Hinesburg, and was well known for his dedication and pride of the department and his love of his family.

We would like to offer Eric’s family and friends our most heartfelt condolences as we begin to process this tremendous loss.

Check out these winter safety tips from our friends at the Williston Fire Department!

This storm was (is...) a doozy for many. As far as wind goes, at 70mph, it was ranked the second fastest recorded wind since Hurricane Hazel in 1952 (at the Burlington International Airport location).

Vermont is a unique state. We take care of our own. That said, a polite reminder that power outages may continue into the next few days for some. If you know of a friend, family member or neighbor who could use some extra help, consider reaching out and lending a hand.

We're here for you. Please stay safe!

Hanukkah begins tonight. Here are some ways for your family to celebrate safely.

* Have a three-foot kid- and pet-free zone around the stove and oven. Use a slotted spatula and flip latkes away from you to avoid oil splashing.
* Small dreidels, coins, or foil wrapping can be choking hazards and should be kept away from young children. Remember, chocolate is also hazardous to pets.
* Put menorahs on sturdy, non-flammable surfaces such as glass, stone, or metal, away from flammable materials like curtains or books. For other candle safety tips, seehttps://www.nfpa.org/~/media/files/public-education/resources/safety-tip-sheets/religious_candles_safety_tips.pdf
