Dear All,
I sincerely apologise for the delay in publishing ‘LANDED!’ Originally scheduled for release this September 2024, postponement is the result of an unfortunate and traumatic overseas RTA I was involved in this July. A subsequent injury and ongoing treatment has severely hampered me. Formatting revisions are currently being undertaken by a 3rd party agency and I hope to have news on revised publication date soon. Meanwhile, thank you for your forbearance and interest in the project, it’s genuinely appreciated. All best wishes, John Keeling 13/10/2024

Dear All,
I apologise for the lack of new content during the past weeks. Unfortunately I was involved in a traumatic RTA overseas, and a subsequent injury and ongoing treatment has been a major impediment. As they used to say on TV, Normal Service Will Be Resumed As Soon As Possible. Meanwhile, thanks for your gracious forbearance, and please don’t think there is a lack of enthusiasm for the EAARO UK SETI ambitions. Best regards, John Keeling (Admin)

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

‘It is generally acknowledged that proof of thinking beings beyond Earth would be one of the most profound discoveries ever. While scientists and engineers are working hard at making such a discovery possible, it is the social scientists who can tell us what will happen if they succeed.'
Seth Shostak, Are We Alone? Berghahn Books, 2011

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

‘A more subtle and plausible risk is that an alien culture, under the guise of teaching or helping us might cause us to build devices that would enable the alien culture to gain control over us. A computer controlled experiment in biochemistry, for example, might be used to create their life form here. There is no limit to the kinds of threats one can imagine given treachery on their part and gullibility on ours. Appropriate security measures and a healthy degree of suspicion are the only weapons.’
Project Cyclops report, 1971

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

‘We build monuments and bury time capsules, so that the not yet born will know us. We carve our initials on benches, paint on rock walls. We write books. We put messages in bottles. We pray. We talk to the dead. We create archives in space. We attach self-portraits of humanity to spacecraft. We mail our names to other worlds. And, of course, we send messages into the sky, hoping that someone, somewhere, someday - perhaps long after we are dead - will receive them... And think of us.’
Kathryn Denning, Unpacking the Great Transmission Debate, 2011

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

‘Are some civilizations bound to their home planet because the local gravitational field is too strong? Can space exploration be so difficult that a civilization might just give up before even trying? Are we favored compared to our galactic neighbours? Analysis of the relative cost of space exploration between planets, in light of the physical characteristics of a civilization’s planet of origin, might provide some insight into the problem of the Fermi paradox or in a more general way the possibility of physical contact between civilizations.’
Yvan Dutil & Stephane Dumas, Cost Analysis of Space Exploration for an Extraterrestrial Civilization, 2011

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

SETI scientists typically assume that extraterrestrial civilizations are much longer lived than terrestrial civilization. That is, the average lifetime of extraterrestrial civilizations, as measured in the time they are actively seeking to make contact with other civilizations, is assumed to be much longer than the time that humans have had the technology and motivation to communicate at interstellar distances. Without this assumption, it is statistically improbable that extraterrestrial and human civilizations will exist sufficiently close enough to one another in time and space to make contact. If we make contact at all, we can expect to be the junior partner in the conversation.
Doug Vakoch, What’s Past is Prologue: Future messages of Cosmic Evolution, 2011

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

SETI@home has already proven that the masses are seeking an appropriate level of SETI participation. If SETI populism is to succeed, we need to explore projects that can be pursued by enthusiasts of more modest technical background.’
H. Paul Shuch, Project Argus: Pursuing Amateur All-Sky SETI, 2011

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

‘The Drake Equation was derived from an assumed mode of contact: the detection of electromagnetic signals from very distant stars. It rested on the assumption that technological civilizations do not expand beyond their home systems. The density of such civilizations was determined by the number of separate evolutions to life and intelligence. The equation did not take into account the possibility of interstellar exploration, interstellar colonization, and direct contact.’
Michael Michaud, Contact With Alien Civilizations, Copernicus Books, 2007

Pleased to tell you that my manuscript for 'LANDED! The Great British Flying Saucer Hoax & Other Extraterrestrial Spoofs' is currently with the formatters. Big thanks to designer Sebastian Woszczyk for creating a fabulous cover for the book, which I will post in due course. And a big thank-you to Philip Mantle who has been so very patient, generous and helpful with my many technical questions about the book formatting process. PLEASE SHARE.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
“I would certainly go along with suggestions that say, ‘As long as you’re looking at the nearest stars for things that are anomalous, why don’t you include some of the nearby bodies in the solar system and see if in any way, shape, or form, they appear abnormal?’”

Browsing through some bits & bobs and found this! It was the first ad' I had anything to do with (in the Braintree & Witham Times - where Steve Harley briefly worked as a journalist). I was running the Musicrafts Video Library in the very early 80's and we were doing well. My then boss, and later good mate and even Best Man, Patrice Mollinghoff (who sadly died just before Christmas) got an artist friend to illustrate my concept. Cheeky really, because I certainly never wore a suit! And in fact Patrice's wife, Frances, absolutely hated that I wore lace-up jeans - and you can't blame her. Happy days...

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence is an unwieldy phrase, so it's understandable that the acronym SETI has become useful shorthand. But do the acronym's that litter the subject mean what we think they do?
