ANY%: A History of Speedrunning by Kat Brewster is now funding on Volume. This latest ROM publication explores the origins of speedrunning from the late ’80s and early ’90s, and up to the present day through interviews and intricate illustrations that break down how runners have achieved the impossible. Dozens of passionate community members give their accounts of what makes an excellent game to run, how the scene originated, what the advent of the internet and streaming sites meant for speedrunning, and where the future of the scene lies. ‘Early on in development [on Street Fighter Ⅱ] it became clear that we were being a little too strict and a little too severe with the input methods. So when you did the down, down-forward, forward punch [input to perform a fireball], you had to hit punch at exactly the moment you were hitting right on the joystick or it wouldn’t work ... In the works for a year and now funding on Volume (.co), Project UrbEx is a unique photographic and manga comic adventure around the world’s abandoned buildings, captured over the past 15+ years by videogame creative Ikumi Nakamura who, it turns out, as well as being one of the most beloved figures in the industry, is secretly a prolific urban explorer. Can she get any cooler? The project was funded in just over a week, and is still open for pledges until the 22 December. Follow the link in our bio.
